  1. that's a legit concern, but what lefty power hitter is available???? want cliff floyd?
  2. nothing wrong w/ sending guzman back to iowa to right himself. i do agree that if he comes back up again, to commit to him for a longer span. of course, prior might be back soon, which would bump guzman from the rotation, but gotta figure kerry wood will be on the DL soon, so guzman should get plenty of starts. he wasn't right when he was called up and shouldn't have been called up. the options were slim and none. who should have got the call?

  4. He only made a few Triple A starts before being called up correct?? Looks like he's improving. Might as well give him another shot. He has some dynamic stuff. It's not like he got bombed, and his era was better than hill's.
  5. Maybe the Cubs should invest in guys who take 6 or 7 pitches per at bat. Those guys tend to be better hitters. They'd also help get to the bullpen much sooner in games when the opposing pitcher is on. Who on the Cubs takes the most pitches? Their best hitter, Derrek Lee. Coincidence? Well, they can replace the centerfielder, but who else you want gone from the starting lineup?? lee? walker? cedeno? Aram? Barrett? murton?? jones?? The manager, the general manager, the hitting coach, the vice president. And I broke a vow to no longer discuss baseball with you to answer that question, so I shall now call it a night and go hit myself in the head with a hammer. whatever man... you know losing lee REALLY kills the offense. I'm sure you've been following how the Cards are doing w/out Pujols. Maybe Jocketty should get ripped apart for having no backup plan.....

  7. didn't check that. good question.
  8. In his last 4 starts in Iowa, he's pitched 26 innings, given up 8 earned runs, and struck out 24. Pretty solid. I'd prefer seeing him over Rusch or Hill.
  9. well, this could change if some teams decide not to pick up options, but the top free agents look to be: 1. Soriano - He's pricing himself out of Cub range. :( I'll put my money on either Boston or NY. 2. Zito - nice 3.28 ERA 3. Schmidt - 2.53 ERA 4. Jermaine Dye - 1.074 ops. k williams > beane. 5. C. Lee - Dye's phenomenal season could put Lee in the Trib price range. 6. Mulder - 4.71 ERA, but has a career 3.91. Keep up the 4.70 ERA and he could be Trib friendly. Come back to Chicago Mark! 7. Trot Nixon - Can't see Boston letting all that obp go. Altogether, maybe C. Lee & Mulder are possible.
  10. dang 7-0 now. run it up reds!
  11. 4-0 tonight to Cincy and they could get swept @ home. Well, the pujols getting hurt hypothetical was thrown out there when lee went down. Guess we're seeing how St. Louis is responding. There's just no way to prepare for injuries to such difference makers. St. L could be in big trouble.
  12. Two $12+ million free agent signings? I doubt it. That would be a SLG team with no OBP, and the Cubs would be back to the problem of lots of solo homeruns. You'd have to slot Jones over to center and Murton into right to keep at least 2 reasonably priced players on the roster to offset all the big ticket items. In that case Murton is the only realistic leadoff option as everybody but DLee would be a threat for a sub .330 OBP. no way the cubs sign 2 guys for $12 mil a piece, but lee and aram are big time opb threats. problem is the cubs don't have a big time slugging 5th hitter to drive them in frequently. they waste too much of lee's .400+ obp.
  13. It's far beyond that now, as today's game very explicitly proves. Who cares if they pitch like their old selves? Look what this team does when the pitching keeps the opponents to one freakin' run! Look how many times they've been shut out! can't win w/ the worse starting pitching in the NL. Lee will give the offense a major shot in the arm when he returns. unfortunately, doesn't look like any starting pitching help is on the way.
  14. soriano was never a free agent. hendry probably didn't have the right package of players for texas, but rumor was that washington was interested in swapping murton for soriano. washington probably wanted a little more. too bad murton & Hill weren't packaged for soriano. the cubs would still be in the playoff race. jmo, soriano will be the guy hendry really goes after in free agency, but they'll end up short just like they did w/ furcal & beltran. but hey at least they tried. typical cub offseason bullcrap
  15. give him aram money. cubs need a power hitting 5 hitter and c. lee fits the bill. heck trade rich hill and some prospects for him now. milwaukee needs pitching.
  16. As of last night, Jones' ops was .898 and Brian Giles was at .798. Looks like a surprisingly good pickup. Basically, got 100 more point of ops for half the cost.
  17. as has been the case since 2003, the team will go as far as prior/wood carry them. unfortunately, prior/wood's inability to pitch gives this team little chance. basically, the cubs are getting zero out of a $20 million investment. (you have to count rusch and miller into the equation, as they were brought in as backup options).
  18. The sad part is that he probably won't pitch well enough to warrant a trade, but then someone will offer him $60 million over 4 years and he will be healthy and pitch like we hoped he would. He'll sign w/ St. Louis for 2 & $12 million and become Cris Carpenter. That Cardinal jersey has magical powers. :x
  19. Kerry looked really uncomfortable last night. Probably will go back on the DL. Watch him sign elsewhere next year and become an All Star.
  20. Teams should just bring up their minor league pitchers when the Cubs come to town. this is bullcrap! might as well put nevin @ 1b dusty and bat walker 2nd.
  21. Agree. Let him dominate Iowa and trade him to a small market team that can plug him in as a 5th starter.
  22. Almost all Cubs pitchers struggle with command, so I'd say coaching plays a roll. But the biggest complaint is that he's not given a reasonable opportunity to get over his struggles. I don't get why a 7+ ERA guy like Rusch gets a free pass but Hill has to take the demotion and be criticized by his manager and GM for sticking up for a teammate. rusch got a free pass to the pen.
  23. would rather see oswalt out there. the cubs seem to have a better chance versus good pitchers than nobodies.
  24. Ramirez & K. Wood for Ervan Santana, B. Wood & McPherson. Of course, Kerry probably won't pitch well enough to warrant a trade.
  25. don't forget roger clemens.
