Adios, Sammy. The truth is that I may never forgive what you did in "Game 162", but I'll also never forget the magical 98' (I saw HR no. 60) and how many times you ran towards me full speed, blowing kisses, as I sat in the RF bleachers and cheered you on.

Its really too bad, Sammy. You should have been the baseball Jordan in this town. :(

Well, If this is indeed the end, So long sammy...

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v429/KingJME/SosaBackground.jpg

This is back from when he got traded, but still appropriate.

I still really hope he can catch on somewhere and get his 600th.

Look for the Yankees to sign him. George will love seeing number 600 in NY.

If this is TRULY the end of Sammy, then the following "Linkin Park" song would be a fitting finale for Sosa:

one thing I don't know why

it doesn't even matter how hard you try

keep that in mind I designed this rhyme when I was obsessed with time

all I know, time was just slipping way

and I watched it count down till the end of the day

watched it watch me and the words that I say

the echo of the clock rhythm in my veins

I know that I didn't look out below

and I watched the time go right out the window

trying to grab hold, trying not to watch

I wasted it all on the hands of the clock

but in the end no matter what I pretend

the journey is more important than the end or the start

and what it meant to me will eventually be

a memory of the time when I tried so hard

I tried so hard

and got so far

but in the end

it doesnt even matter

I had to fall

to lose it all

but in the end

it doesnt even matter

yo one thing, one thing I don't know why

it doesn't even matter how hard you try

keep that in mind I designed this rhyme to explain the due time

all I know, time to so-socialize like the host of the party

all for shake and made eye contact

party control showing all that

northeast, southwest coast

stand out the window, no opportunity to mingle

I tried to show her, if you could just sense a middle disorder

I brought you back of the thing

like the imaginary man of your dreams

well, you would always seem to make it worth it

a sleek skin I never nerved you

you felt lovin, I never applied a room

without bringing the plan

by any means and means of leaving you teens,

of all those teenage scenes, I tried so hard

I tried so hard

and got so far

but in the end

it doesnt even matter

I had to fall

to lose it all

but in the end

it doesnt even matter

one thing I don't know how

it doesn't even matter when you look at it now

because when I designed this rhyme I was scared of it all

scared to fall, I hadn't even tried to crawl

and I was forced to run, with you mocking me

stopping me, back stabbing me constantly

remembering all those times you fought with me

watch the clock now chop full of hypocrisy

and now your mouth wishes it could inhale

every single little thing you said and make it expel

every single word you sputter just to get your piece, but it really doesn't matter to me

because from the start to the end no matter what I pretend

the journey is more important than the end or the start

and what it meant to me will eventually be

a memory of the time when I tried so hard

I tried so hard

and got so far

but in the end

it doesnt even matter

I had to fall

to lose it all

but in the end

it doesnt even matter..

Questions may exist about his character or his possible usage of performance enhancers, but I don't think there are many people who would dispute that, for his accomplishments alone, Sammy deserved a happier ending than this.

Sammy, I don't care about Game 162, or the cork incident (on which I wholeheartedly believe you) or the so-called "crappy" 2004 that so many players in baseball would have killed for, or the fact that you couldn't speak English at a court interrogation disguised as a Congressional hearing. The fact is that you were a huge part in me becoming a Cubs fan, and you carried me through many a crappy year in the late 90s - early 00s. And for that, I'll always be grateful. :)

I'd sign him.

Put him in Cubbie Blue for one more year. Even if it was mostly on the bench. I'd do it.

Come on. Like our current outfield is going to produce anyhow.

Worst outfield in the league since Sosa left. That's just a bare bones freaking *FACT*

can't be any worse than Marquis Grissom. I don't think he'd accept a 4th or 5th OF spot though.

I'd like to see the Cubs sign Sammy to a one day contract so he can retire as a Cub. I think he and the Cubs fans deserve that. I will always love Sammy Sosa, and I hope he makes it into the Hall of Fame and I look forward to the Cubs putting him up on the foul polls with Banks, Sandberg, Santo, and Williams. Sammy, Good luck and God bless.

I would bring him back its really sad , now thats Sammy has hit rock bottom is it enough where Baker could talk him into coming back for a bench role?

Farewell, Sammy.

I knew this day would come, and that it would be sooner rather than later. I am truly sorry that things ended in Chicago the way they did. I, for one, was absolutely disgusted by the way people treated you on the way out, when just one year earlier they were lauding you as the king of the city.

I will always cherish the memories. I liked you as a relatively skinny player in the mid 90's when you were putting up 30-30 years. I grew to adore you in 1998, and, unlike some, I haven't lost that love.

Thank you, Sammy, for all the memories. I look forward to one day telling my kids stories about your playing days. I just hope I can one day enjoy baseball again as much as I did during the magical Summer of '98.

That

and I'm really upset it's ending like this. :(

That actually happens all the time in football, but I haven't heard of that in baseball.

My favorite story of that is when Steve Beuerlein signed a one-day contract with Carolina to retire as a Panther. :D

I actually think this would be a savvy move by a PR savvy group, but I don't know that they didn't napalm their bridges with Sosa after 2004. I don't know if enough time has passed for that to be a possibility.

As bad as he was last year I'm still surprized that a team hasn't offered him a deal worth around a 1 million to bring fans into the gate.

I dont think that his production+gate value will even equal a million bucks anymore. He's pretty much way out of the public eye at this point.

Sosa is no longer a draw anywhere. I hate using ESPN as a barometer but Sosa's news of retirement was 15 minutes into this morning's Sportscenter. If he was significant he would have easily been near the beginning of the show.

Sammy might want big money for that one day. Plus, if he does do that would that push his Hall eligibility back a year?

Seeing as he won't be put on "retirement list" (according to Adam Katz, his agent) for the time being, Sosa is technically not retired, thus the clock for the Hall wouldn't start anyways. My best guess this whole "retirement" talk is a ploy to tyr and get a guarantee contract from the Nationals (seeing as they are the only ones looking at him).

I'm just surprise the Astros aren't thinking about a taking a flier on Sosa.

If Neifi is worth 2.5 mil/year, Sammy is worth at least a mil  I'd think some cellar-dweller would be willing to take a flier on having a future HOF hit his 600th HR in their uniform for $1mil. Who's in KC's outfield?

Dusty and Sammy don't like each other. If the Cubs fall out of contention it would be really cool to bring Sammy back so he could hit his last homer at Wrigley but Hendry won't do that while Dusty is here.

Why would it be cool? If the Cubs fall out of contention they should bring up some minor leaguers to prepare for next season not worry about aiding Sosa's selfish quest for 600. If Sosa manages to make his way to Cooperstown it will be as a Cub (the numbers are overwhelming while with Chicago) they don't owe him the chance to reach any milestones.
