Apparently, according to Rosenthal, the Nationals and Sosa's reps are meeting again tonight, but no deal is imminent.

The meeting is expected to include Sosa, his agent, Tom Reich, and Nationals general manager Jim Bowden. However, no deal appears imminent, according to a source with knowledge of the negotiations.

Sosa, 37, met for the first time with the Nationals last week, but the team reportedly was willing to offer only a minor-league contract with an invitation to spring training. Sosa, 12 homers short of 600, wants a guaranteed deal.

Why doesent Sosa go look for a job in the California Pino league, he might find Wild Thing there.

You know that the line from that movie is "California Penal League" ?

I don't know what a California Pino league is. I also don't know what your comment has to do with the thread at all.

Vance I made the post in another thread about the Dubois playing there in that league now. It a refrence from the movie major league about where wild thing Rick Vaughn is asked where he pitched. He had just been released from Jail.

I think he may be more apt to find the cast of Sideways in that league.

This move is baffling on a number of fronts.

First, the Nationals already have a number of outfielders. There's Sledge, Church, Guillen and maybe Soriano. If Soriano doesn't play OF, then they have a surpluss of secondbasemen.

The Nationals park also isn't a place that Sosa will thrive.

I can see a team taking a flyer on Sosa, but I don't think it's a great place for Sosa or the Nats. Of course, at this stage, Sosa is likely thankful for any guaranteed major league contract.

Vance, Sledge isn't with the team anymore, and it's possible that Guillen won't be ready for the beginning of the season.

So what you're saying is that Guillen is injured and might not start the season?

Where would Sosa play should he get picked up by Colorado? I don't think that they are going to bench Brad Hawpe (a guy with a bright future, and a pretty good defensive RFer) to play Sosa.

That is sad. Can you imagine saying that just 2 years ago? Who would you want in RF, a prospect or Sammy Sosa.

Times are changing.

Hawpe's doesn't hit LHP very well, so Sosa would be a good choice to platoon in RF.

Heck, I'd rather have Sosa platooning in RF with Jacque than see Jacque face Andy Pettite, Mark Mulder, and the good young lefties in Pittsburgh.

Of course it's not. I'm just saying Sosa/Jones > Jones alone.

Dave Van Dyck, the author of the infamous "Was that a real Baker interview or not?" column, thinks that Sosa signing with the Nats might mean Soriano is expendableand might go to the Cubs...

The what?

The article where people couldn't tell if he was quoting Baker, or guessing what Baker would say at the convention.

Thanks for translating my gobbledegook... :P

There was much ado made about that article in the baseball forum a few weeks ago Mizzou...sorry I could have been more clear.

It's hard to believe Sosa wasn't juiced if you look at the way his body changed but I think the real reasons for his decline can be traced to two plays in 2002 and 2003.

Late in 2002 he collided with Mark Bellhorn in RF and the injury essentially ended Sosa's season. I don't remember what the specific injury was but I believe he screwed up his back in the collision.

He got off to a slow start in 2003 and I'm convinced the lingering effects from that injury had something to do with that. Then he got hit in the head against the Pirates in one of the worst beanings I've ever seen. He was never the same hitter after that.

I've always thought that if those two things don't happen he has a very different final season and a half in Chicago. I also think the corked bat issue never happens either.

Might be the end of the line....

http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=2328640

"Sammy doesn't think of himself as someone who has to beg for a spot on a big league roster," said the source.

"Sammy wants to get to 600 home runs, but he's not willing to humiliate himself to keep playing. He feels that the lack of interest in his services this winter constitutes a humiliation," added the source.

Whoever that "source" is does not say much that would make anyone think Sosa has lost his diva attitude.

Personally I think Sammy swallows his pride and takes the deal in an attempt to prove everyone wrong. IMO, however, the Washington ballpark is all wrong for him.

I think he would be better off calling the Rockies and seeing if he can get a NRI. If he could have a good spring he might be able to put up good numbers at Coors Field if they gave him regular time.
