i think we're a tejada or millwood away from being contenders.

And your plan to get tejada is...

I do agree we need another superstar to be considered a realistic contender. If we just add more expensive but non-difference-making players like Eyre/Howry/Jones then suckage is all but certain.

Uh, we already signed a superstar. His name is John Mabry.

No sense adding my two cents here, my opinions on Jones are well-known and about the same as everyone elses. I've been anti-Dusty since 2003, anti-Hendry since last October, and now the chickens are finally coming home to roost. These two buffoons, along with MacPhail, need to be fired ASAP. If we had something other than a corporate monolith as team owner, you can bet these dillweeds would be on the street looking for a job.

A $100MM payroll, and THIS is the team you put together?? Wow, just wow.

Dealing with the reality of the lousy hand Hendry has dealt us in the last few months of his tenure before he gets the axe, I concur that Jones wouldn't be the worst thing in the world, IF he were signed to a 1-year deal a-la Burnitz, and IF he were strictly platooned. We can't do anything now about the former, but the latter we can. Eduardo Perez is available and he absolutely destroys LHP. He can play corner OF.

I do hope we can put to bed the Todd Walker trades now, his bat will be desperately needed at this point.

The most disturbing aspect of this offseason is all the multi-year committments. We're married to some very questionable players for 2 and 3 years.

This shouldn't suprise anyone. Hendry has stated several times that his priorities for the off-season was getting a lead-off hitter, improving the BP & the defense. JJ is a GG caliber defender.

I don't think too many people are surprised, just disgusted.

Disgusted is an over- reaction. They have no idea what JJ will do in a Cubs uniform. I would have never guessed & most baseball people I have spoken to, would have never guessed that D.Lee would turn into Pujols in 05'.

I'm willing to see it play out, before I completely chastise Hendry & Cubs management. This is why grading teams & GM's on their off-season is absolutely ridiculous.

My comment has nothing to do with these quotes. TBCF, I think your sig is a slap in the face to all the "good cub fans" that post here, and if it wasnt a family board Id like to tell you where you could shove it. Seriously, why even put something like that in your sig besides to be a smart ass?

Mods and Tim, my apologies if this is out of line, but I couldnt sit here seeing his sig over and over and not say something.

I still can't beleive this signing!!!!

Would love Perez for the bench/platoon as well(especially now), maybe it will serve to pacify Baker's "need" to put his fingerprints on everything and anything.

Walker best be here batting 2nd opening day, unless used in a deal for a difference maker only.

And if that didn't make you sick, try this:

Tampa and their sub 35m payroll has an outfield of:

Carl Crawford, Rocco Baldelli, Jonny Gomes with Aubrey Huff, Joey Gathright, Delmon Young and Damon Hollins.

Their outfield kicks our outfields butt. Their back up outfielders kick our outfields butt.

Florida Marlins and their sub 10m payroll :D has an outfield of:

Miguel Cabrera, Jeremy Hermida and Chris Aguila

Their outfield kicks our outfields butt.

Miguel Cabrera alone kicks our outfields butt.

Heck, the sub 50m payroll team that dumped Jones has a better outfield than we do.

They have Shannon Stewart, Torrii Hunter, Jason Kubel and Lew Ford.

If it's any consolation, I'm not so sure the Cardinals outfield is much better than ours. But, with 100m to spend on a team, you would think that someone could come up with something a little better than what we have.

I have to believe he will be since the Cubs don't need to trade for an OFer anymore

The only--and I do mean, the ONLY positive thing about this approach--is that you still have all your top pitching prospects. If Hill and Guzman really are the real deal, you'll have them now for 2007 when Wood and Maddux are gone. And Jerome Williams is still here, too.

Also note--nothing is stopping the new GM next winter from dumping bad Hendry signings like Rusch and Jones and Neifi. All you have to do in baseball is eat some money, and you can move anybody.

Rusch + Neifi + Jones = $11MM/year, isn't that just sickening? But if your payroll is $100MM+, you eat $5-6MM to get rid of these stiffs and it isn't the end of the world.

Theo will take care of us next winter, I'm sure of it.

I'm not convinced. Patterson still has to be moved and I see Walker (and others) being included in a deal to get another MI or SP.

My comment wasn't a value judgement just a hunch. I still think Hendry's plan is to move Walker. I seriously don't think Patterson will be on the bench either so, from my point of view, there is at least one more deal yet to be completed.

At this point, wasting money on Rusch would be stupid.

Actually the Cubs HAVE upgraded CF, RF, LF, SS (assuming RC plays) and the bullpen. I know the signings aren't ideal but they have been upgraded...

Seriously, you have to be laughing your butt off right now. You must be loving every minute of this. I know I would if the Cards signed Jones.

And they're just itching to downgrade 2B greatly to make up for it.

I don't know why he would. We don't have any more "holes" on this team. (In reality, we do...but Hendry had addressed everything:leadoff, rigthfield, bullpen)

I could understand (not necessarily agree) trading Walker to improve somewhere like rightfield, lead-off, centerfield, bullpen...when those weren't filled in other ways. But now, it only makes sense to trade Walker for a legitimate upgrade. Our offense is still the weak part of this team. If Hendry trades Walker, then not only is he stupid, but he'll prove his stubborness takes precedence over creating a good ball club. Walker is better than any secondbaseman we have. He's signed a RF...and traded for a lead-off CF...Walker isn't expensive, so there's no need to dump his salary. Trading Walker "just for the hell of it" makes no sense.

I can't see it happening. If it does, it will be a dumber move than locking up Jockcrap Jones to a three year deal.
