What is with Carrie Muskat's article?

(Jones is) expected to start in right field, move Patterson to bench

The Chicago Cubs may have finally completed their outfield.

The Cubs announced Tuesday they have signed free agent Jacque Jones to a three-year, $16 million deal. Jones could fill the vacant right field spot and join new center fielder Juan Pierre, acquired in a trade from Florida, and rookie left fielder Matt Murton.

WTF?

:?:

It might have something to do with a plan to platoon him. Rotoworld also think Jones is best in a platoon (how could you really disagree? lol)

Cubs signed outfielder Jacque Jones, who had been with the Twins, to a three-year, $16 million contract.

Jones should be an upgrade over Jeromy Burnitz, though not as much of one as the Cubs would like. He's only had an 800 OPS once in his career, but that's because the Twins never used him strictly against right-handers, as they should have. In addition to his reasonable offense, he'll play very good defense in right field. All in all, he's worth $5 million per year. It's just up to the Cubs to use him properly. That means sitting him against left-handers and keeping him in the bottom half of the batting order.

The Cubs might be looking for a RH to compliment him.

but stop overreacting, cause you people reaction makes me wanna go and watch "Glitter", to which I really don't want to.

Who watches "Glitter"?

If the Cubs had waited until after midnight tonight, the Twins would have non-tendered him and it wouldn't have cost the Cubs a draft pick.

Idiots.

Jim Hendry isn't smart.

wrong.

he was offered arbitration, which he declined. it was going to cost a draft pick no matter when we signed him.

And risk the Cardinals grabbing him?

Doesn't matter. Boy this is a painful offseason...

Uh....it's costing them a draft pick because the Twins have already tendered him a contract.

I thought the Twins offered him arbitration and Jones declined it. Wouldn't that cost the Cubs a draft pick anyways?

Yeah. What a loss that would have been. Good thing Jim acted when he did or Jacque "MVP" Jones would be in RF for the Cardinals next year.

The best part of the signing is that when Hendry brings up Pie too early in late May, he won't even start more than a couple of games a week.

Platooning Jones is fine by me, as the less ABs he gets the better. But why in the name of all that is good and holy would you commit three years to a platoon player?

The three years doesn't bother me as much as the $16 million does.

He can catch the ball though right?

And I like Tree's idea, I'm going to take mine now.

Me too... I hope this isn't too huge.

Yeah, Jim, defense really is the key to victory.

Look what a good defense has done for the other Chicago team...I'd say they've turned out alright.

Maybe that's the problem, Hendry doesn't realize the difference between baseball and football, and he's trying to emulate 'da Bears...

This may be worse than signing Neifi for 2 years $5M. Guess Hendry figures if he gets fired this year, he is going to strap the Cubs with crappy players for a few years, so his legacy will live on.

I agree with another poster when did he become such a dumb GM?

I hate to go all spaztic on people here, but JUMPIN' JEBUS of YESTERDAY'S NEWS, what the fraud are your problems? I understand 3 yr and $16 mill is WAY TOO MUCH for Jones, but let's face it the Cubs had NOBODY ready to play RF for atleast 3 yrs, and no Carlos Lee, or Cliff Floyd are not RFers. I hate the fact Hendry gave JJ the deal, but...it's not the end-all contract that will destroy the Cubs season. If JJ is used properly, he is worth the contract, the problem is....the Cubs won't know how to use JJ properly. But, I do think keeping Walker now becomes a priority, regardless of Hendry's "ability to catch the ball" theory. Jones WILL BE FINE for the Cubs, the negativity justs bums me out.

Seeing as there was no 'trade on the horizon' for a big bat like Dunn/Abreu/Huff (cause the Cubs don't have the parts needed) and the OTHER choice for RF was Juan Encarnacion....who would you rather have? You don't have the info on what players are available, and regardless of what the media says....I highly doubt Tejada, Abreu, and/or Huff are TRULY available. I do think, 3 yrs and $16 mill is abit much, but stop overreacting, cause you people reaction makes me wanna go and watch "Glitter", to which I really don't want to.

Here's my problem, Northside.

Hendry's #1 priority this offseason was Furcal. He lost Furcal, over money which the Cubs had a lot of this offseason, to a team that didn't even have a manager and barely had a GM in place. Did the Dodgers overpay? Yes. But when a player is his #1 priority, he should have ponyed up and signed him if he thought so much of him in the first place.

Now, when he lost out on him, did Hendry even so much as sniff at Giles? I have never seen any reports that the Cubs did. Which would have greatly improved one of their problems from last year, OBP. That would have been a big improvement over now.

Now he not only signs a average player, at best, he signs him to a three-year deal. And the Cubs still have the OBP problem, as they have added a player who struck out 120 times in 523 AB's and hit .249 in '05. So instead of sacking up and signing the proven Giles, I'm sure we'll be hearing from Hendry how Jones will be just fine. Oh and the line (again) how if the pitching holds up, "we'll win our share of games".

And like you said, "the Cubs won't know how to use JJ properly."

Sadly, this offseason to date puts the Cubs no closer to a World Series title.

I would love to be optimistic, but I honestly can't do it.

a team w/ a 100+ mil payroll shouldn't have to worry about role playing their corner OFers. a team w/ a payroll like that should have studs at their corner OF spots (or at least one of the corner OF spots)...the fact that you are concerned about whether the cubs will 'use him properly' just illustrates how sad a move like this is for a team like the cubs.

are you really so naive to buy into that? the white sox won because they hit a bunch of homers and had lights out pitching.
