Is there some sort of equation out there that figures out how many runs a Gold Glove right fielder saves with his defense over the league average?

Baseball Prospectus calculates FRAR, which is fielding runs saved over replacement.

Can someone post that, please? I would like to know just how many runs Jacques "Savior" Jones is going to save us this year in right.

Not that Hendry would actually do any research on something like that.

Screw it I'm going to get heroin.

Why bother? A bottle of Liquid Drano is a lot cheaper.

It's an OLD ENGLISH night if you ask me. EDWARD 40HANDS!

I'm on my third bottle of Dos Equis. I'm not gonna quit until I've forgotten about this signing. :D

Some Bailey's mixed with a little bit of vanilla ice is calming my nerves.

Eh. Im using OE and "Informer" by Snow.

Murton is suppose to play fulltime in LF. If Jones is platooned the Cubs will acquire another hitter.

Oh, you mean like how Dubois was supposed to play in left and how Ronny is supposed to play shortstop next year? Face it, if we sign someone like Wilson, they're playing everyday over Murton.

No, I don't. Hendry and Baker are already on record saying Murton will be the fulltime LF.

I'm just saying the money bothered me more than the length of contract. If it was a 1 year deal at 6 million, at least he'd be off the books come next offseason, but we're stuck paying him $5 million each of the next 2 years after that.

But a difference of 1 million dollars between the first season at 5 and the 1 yr deal you use as an example is fairly inconsequential within a $100m payroll. Your point is that you would be glad his contract is off the books after one year, so don't the years actually bother you more than the money?

Someone please tell me the third year is a club option year......w/1 million buyout.

I listened to Jim Hendry on WGN radio tonight and he made no mention of an option year. They had Jacque Jones on as well. He sounded like a nice guy, which makes it even more depressing. He'll be out there trying to do his best just like everyone else. It's not his fault that Hendry is a dolt.

Last year defensively Jones was 23 runs above replacement, 12 runs above average. He was 17 batting runs above replacement, and 1 run below average.

If the Cubs had waited until after midnight tonight, the Twins would have non-tendered him and it wouldn't have cost the Cubs a draft pick.

Idiots.

I thought the Twins offered him arbitration and Jones declined it. Wouldn't that cost the Cubs a draft pick anyways?

My mistake...

I'm trying really hard to understand this signing....

Is Jones going to give us 5+ million a year worth of production? I don't think he'll give us anything even close to Burnitz #'s....

How are we possibly going to be able to contend with Jones in RF? We just paid 5+ million a year for production we could've gotten off our bench and thrown in RF.

Three year deal! What the hell is the matter with Hendry?

This is freaking ridiculous.

I don't think it is. Now Hendry has several options:

1. He can trade Pie as part of a deal for Tejada and have all three OF positions set.

2. He can platoon Jones and Murton if Pie is playing for the Cubs in 2007.

3. He can platoon Jones and Hairston or another rightie this year.

Please tell me you're joking? A platoon of Jones and Hairston? Yeah, that will produce some massive offensive numbers...

Not ideal, admittedly, but against LHP Murton is much more of a power bat, and Hairston could bat 2nd against LHP. Jones has some very good numbers when facing RHP, which some on this board overlook.

Can you show me somewhere in Jones' stats that back up this claim because I sure don't see it.

Well, he's not Manny Ramirez, but he is not quite as horrorshow as some - including myself - make him out to be. Still, 3 years is ludicrous.

I am not crazy about this signing either, but if Jones and the Cubs have a good year this board will have to set some sort of world record for crow-eating. Man, just relentless about this signing.

If the Cubs go into the season without adding another big bat or another solid starting pitcher then I don't think any of us have to worry.

I'll be happy to do that if it happens.

That's because it sucks.

As an aside, does anyone think this makes Pie or even Murton more available trade pieces for a big bat??? I'm looking for a silver lining.

You should have seen Burnitz last year...

And we're right about both...

I could see Murton being used to get a big bat. He doesn't seem to be the type of guy that this organization covets. Pie isn't going anywhere. He's a Hendry wet dream.

It's kind of funny how this thread has gone, kinda like something bad happeneing to you.

Denial (no way this is going to happen)

Anger (#$@#$@#$# Hendry)

Bargaining (well if we get Mickey Mantle, TEd Williams, Joe Dimagio this might be ok)

Depression (There goes the next 3 seasons etc., I'm gonna kill myself)

Acceptance (well maybe if he hits .300 for the first time in his life we can do it).

On my walk, I was thinking the same thing basically.

This could add Murton to the "chip" pile if need be for a bigger acqisition.

then I think I came to my senses.

i think we're a tejada or millwood away from being contenders.

And your plan to get tejada is...

I do agree we need another superstar to be considered a realistic contender. If we just add more expensive but non-difference-making players like Eyre/Howry/Jones then suckage is all but certain.
