Actually the Cubs HAVE upgraded CF, RF, LF, SS (assuming RC plays) and the bullpen. I know the signings aren't ideal but they have been upgraded...

Seriously, you have to be laughing your butt off right now. You must be loving every minute of this. I know I would if the Cards signed Jones.

I was at first however our offseason has been pretty bad. I still have faith in Walt though.

I don't know that he has room to laugh just yet...is Taguchi, Edmonds, Bigbie really any better than Murton, Pierre, Jones ?

Certainly the Cards are the team to beat, but c'mon man...the NL Central has done nothing to this point to "upgrade" ... St. Louis has no RF, LF, 2nd and lost a key member of their pitching staff.

I am not thrilled with the signing, but not ready to call the season in!

My comment wasn't a value judgement just a hunch. I still think Hendry's plan is to move Walker. I seriously don't think Patterson will be on the bench either so, from my point of view, there is at least one more deal yet to be completed.

I don't know why he would. We don't have any more "holes" on this team. (In reality, we do...but Hendry had addressed everything:leadoff, rigthfield, bullpen)

I could understand (not necessarily agree) trading Walker to improve somewhere like rightfield, lead-off, centerfield, bullpen...when those weren't filled in other ways. But now, it only makes sense to trade Walker for a legitimate upgrade. Our offense is still the weak part of this team. If Hendry trades Walker, then not only is he stupid, but he'll prove his stubborness takes precedence over creating a good ball club. Walker is better than any secondbaseman we have. He's signed a RF...and traded for a lead-off CF...Walker isn't expensive, so there's no need to dump his salary. Trading Walker "just for the hell of it" makes no sense.

I can't see it happening. If it does, it will be a dumber move than locking up Jockcrap Jones to a three year deal.

I think the whole idea behind trading Walker, for Hendry, is to improve the infield defense. I have to see what they get in return before I say its a bad move. Walker is valuable to this team but his production can be replaced.

Hendry said one of the reasons for going after Jones was that he was a left-handed bat.

That just makes me want to hate the move even more.

yeah, we'll just improve at fourth base and longstop and oh wait those aren't real and in actuality we have no more positions where we have the chance to get better and we certainly aren't going to acquire a secondbaseman who is more productive than walker, so why trade him?

Makes me even wonder why bother making this move, if the Cubs could had re-signed Burnitz cheaper and only a 1 yr deal.

I think it's now safe to say that this has been an absolute horror of an off-season and guess what? We're only in december!

I don't think he's trying to rub it in our face. It's more like he's trying to console us. It doesn't bother me. He's one of the good Card fans.

What did I do? What I said was true, as it stands the Cubs are better than last year. Sheesh.

"He's athletic, he's got some pop in his bat, he can play quality defense ... he runs well," Cubs general manager Jim Hendry said. "He's 30 years old, and he certainly has a lot of upside left in him."

Jones will be the closest thing to a power hitter among Cubs outfielders, who for now include Pierre, Matt Murton, Jerry Hairston, Corey Patterson and rookie Felix Pie. Hendry said he is not bothered by the relative lack of pop.

"I think we've got more versatility. We're more athletic. I think we're going to run a lot better and play a lot better defense," Hendry said.

you're an idiot.

You gave him HOPE and that is a dangerous thing for any Cubs fan to have

I thought you were calling someone on NSBB an idiot. Then I realized you were talking about Hendry. Very well said. :D

I'm thinking more aong the lines of upgrading SS and moving Cedeno to 2B. Anyway, I didn't say I was in favor of trading him but if the MI can be improved (or we can use him to get another good SP) I'm all for it.

Faint praise indeed. And you guys have a 20 game head start.

I'm with everyone here, I really am not all that impressed with Jones. BUT, if Hendry can pull off this Tejada trade and get maybe a Weaver type pitcher, you never know....

Alright! We're going to be better defensively! And fast too! Nevermind the fact that we'll only score two runs a game, we're gonna have the awesomest defense ever!!! Way to go, Jimbo.

unless that ss is tejada, i don't think new ss + cedeno is better than walker + cedeno.

Not sure if anyone saw my comments earlier, but here goes.

Honestly, I hope Bruce can come up with a article that Jones signing was not a good idea.

Pitiful. Disgraceful. I feel like I'm watching the 3 stooges running the Cubs Organization tormenting Cubs fans.

Does anyone else hear Tull's: "Thick as a brick" everytime you read one of Jim's comments?

The worst part is that I'm not sure if its the remarkable parallelism between Jim's disposition and the title or the song or just the fact that he comes across so moronic that I instantly think he's just a moron squared.

At any rate I thought I would give you folks that have had the pleasure of not reading the past several pages a quick recap of Jim Hendry's "comments" since he's been here.

"I hired Dusty in my first year and I felt we had the right guy."

"There was never any intent of Dusty to leave, there was never any intent on my part of wanting him to leave, there was never any thought of him not coming back next year."

"I'm just not going to get caught short."

Brilliant!

I'm not even sure I could assort Jim as an adversary at this point because in order to be considered an opponent there would need to be a contest.

Thus far the only thing Jim Hendry have general managed anyone on is the finer points of being an idiot.
