"He's athletic, he's got some pop in his bat, he can play quality defense ... he runs well," Cubs general manager Jim Hendry said. "He's 30 years old, and he certainly has a lot of upside left in him."

Jones will be the closest thing to a power hitter among Cubs outfielders, who for now include Pierre, Matt Murton, Jerry Hairston, Corey Patterson and rookie Felix Pie. Hendry said he is not bothered by the relative lack of pop.

"I think we've got more versatility. We're more athletic. I think we're going to run a lot better and play a lot better defense," Hendry said.

you're an idiot.

Run where?Back to the dugout after he K's 120 times? Seriously, Hendry's fascination with running and defense this offeseason really shows that he thinks he is copying the White Sox.......Jim you are a moran!

I'm with everyone here, I really am not all that impressed with Jones. BUT, if Hendry can pull off this Tejada trade and get maybe a Weaver type pitcher, you never know....

What if we landed Tejada and did not land a Weaver type pitcher? I think landing a mediocre pitcher like Weaver would negate some of the improvements Tejada would bring.

Alright! We're going to be better defensively! And fast too! Nevermind the fact that we'll only score two runs a game, we're gonna have the awesomest defense ever!!! Way to go, Jimbo.

this is track and field, right? the cubs should have an awesome 4x100.

No sense adding my two cents here, my opinions on Jones are well-known and about the same as everyone elses. I've been anti-Dusty since 2003, anti-Hendry since last October, and now the chickens are finally coming home to roost. These two buffoons, along with MacPhail, need to be fired ASAP. If we had something other than a corporate monolith as team owner, you can bet these dillweeds would be on the street looking for a job.

A $100MM payroll, and THIS is the team you put together?? Wow, just wow.

Dealing with the reality of the lousy hand Hendry has dealt us in the last few months of his tenure before he gets the axe, I concur that Jones wouldn't be the worst thing in the world, IF he were signed to a 1-year deal a-la Burnitz, and IF he were strictly platooned. We can't do anything now about the former, but the latter we can. Eduardo Perez is available and he absolutely destroys LHP. He can play corner OF.

I do hope we can put to bed the Todd Walker trades now, his bat will be desperately needed at this point.

Would love Perez for the bench/platoon as well(especially now), maybe it will serve to pacify Baker's "need" to put his fingerprints on everything and anything.

Walker best be here batting 2nd opening day, unless used in a deal for a difference maker only.

I have to believe he will be since the Cubs don't need to trade for an OFer anymore

I'm not convinced. Patterson still has to be moved and I see Walker (and others) being included in a deal to get another MI or SP.

At this point, we can't afford to move Walker. We need his bat more than ever. Trading Walker now would be stupid.

So basically it's gauranteed to happen.

It's not as good as the Burnitz quote from last year, but one of the radio guys asked Hendry about the high strike out totals, and he said something to the effect of "yeah, well high strike out guys don't ground into too many double plays."

Actually the Cubs HAVE upgraded CF, RF, LF, SS (assuming RC plays) and the bullpen. I know the signings aren't ideal but they have been upgraded...

Will you please leave.

What did I do? What I said was true, as it stands the Cubs are better than last year. Sheesh.

You gave him HOPE and that is a dangerous thing for any Cubs fan to have

According to BP the Cubs finished about 6-7 wins less than they should have:

http://www.baseballprospectus.com/statistics/standings.php

PLUS they upgraded that team.

Oh and the Cards finished well above what they should have.

Walker is valuable to this team but his production can be replaced.

yeah, we'll just improve at fourth base and longstop and oh wait those aren't real and in actuality we have no more positions where we have the chance to get better and we certainly aren't going to acquire a secondbaseman who is more productive than walker, so why trade him?

I'm thinking more aong the lines of upgrading SS and moving Cedeno to 2B. Anyway, I didn't say I was in favor of trading him but if the MI can be improved (or we can use him to get another good SP) I'm all for it.

unless that ss is tejada, i don't think new ss + cedeno is better than walker + cedeno.

I think this team lives and dies with it's pitchers. The improved infield defense may save runs but if the pitchers bomb we're not going anywhere anyway. Walker's bat is nice but his range and overall defense just don't impress me. Having said that, I would like to keep him on the team but considering everything that's been quoted up til now, I think he's going to be traded.

What else is actually out there? Millwood? Would love to have him, but I dont see it.

Yeah, and IF I win the lottery, I'll be rich.

I'm not holding my breath for either to happen.

Unless Rolan is back strong and the Cards make some nice moves I'm saying the Cubs could take the central no problem. As it stands the 06 Cubs are better than the 05 Cubs (that were really about a 86 win team).

Stand away from the ledge guys.

So who is going to be taking the blame when this team tanks mid season?

What possible excuses are we going to hear?

"He just didnt pan out for us."

"The ivy wasn't green enough."

"We really needed some more starting pitchers."

"Dude, like I totally miss Macias."

"Neifi is clutch dude, thats why he has batted second all year."

"We tried to work out some deals, but they fell through."

"There is no way we were going to give up Hill for Dunn."

Easy for you to say. At least your GM has some sort of a clue. He may not be the best around, but he's not a drooling, simpering moron who's leading your team down a pit of doom and gloom?

True Cub fans know what it's like right now. Although, I'm not really angry. I'm numb. I think I've trained myself to never get angry anymore at the moves this team makes because a) nothing shocks me anymore, and b) I'm tired of getting hurt.

Well, Hendry better either get Tejada and a good platoon man for RF or hope the Cubs have lots of luck in the health department this season.

Question: Do the Cubs have any good right handed RF's @ Iowa?? Whatever happened to Kelton??

Hendry will now sign Sosa to platoon with Jones, after 62 years of suffering,i will spend my time with the Minor leaguers

I think he is now with the Braves.
