(Jones is) expected to start in right field, move Patterson to bench

The Chicago Cubs may have finally completed their outfield.

The Cubs announced Tuesday they have signed free agent Jacque Jones to a three-year, $16 million deal. Jones could fill the vacant right field spot and join new center fielder Juan Pierre, acquired in a trade from Florida, and rookie left fielder Matt Murton.

WTF?

:?:

It might have something to do with a plan to platoon him. Rotoworld also think Jones is best in a platoon (how could you really disagree? lol)

Cubs signed outfielder Jacque Jones, who had been with the Twins, to a three-year, $16 million contract.

Jones should be an upgrade over Jeromy Burnitz, though not as much of one as the Cubs would like. He's only had an 800 OPS once in his career, but that's because the Twins never used him strictly against right-handers, as they should have. In addition to his reasonable offense, he'll play very good defense in right field. All in all, he's worth $5 million per year. It's just up to the Cubs to use him properly. That means sitting him against left-handers and keeping him in the bottom half of the batting order.

The Cubs might be looking for a RH to compliment him.

Kevin Mench and Preston Wilson are possiblities. Mench had an OPS of .980 against righties last year, while Wilson had one of only .780 while with the Nats.

What does this mean for Pie? With Pierre slated for an extension, and assuming Murton does reasonably well, there's no openings in the foreseeable future for him.

The three years doesn't bother me as much as the $16 million does.

I disagree - I think the three years is pretty **** bad.

If it was, say, 3 years, $7 million, it would be better. Who in the hell would take Jacque Jones off our hands at 5+ million per year?

Someone who has to deal with him for a short timeframe.

Do you think we could get him for around $2 million a year? Are you serious?

He can catch the ball though right?

And I like Tree's idea, I'm going to take mine now.

Yeah, Jim, defense really is the key to victory.

Look what a good defense has done for the other Chicago team...I'd say they've turned out alright.

are you really so naive to buy into that? the white sox won because they hit a bunch of homers and had lights out pitching.

Look one line down...And I can't find my USB to upload my picture right now... :(

Why in the world would Wilson come to the Cubs to platoon and just hit against lefties?

He made 5M last year. The Cubs actually gave him a slight raise at 3/16

For ignoring the Bears, Urlacher is now going to pop you like he did Vick on Sunday night.

No, I'm not serious at all. I was just making an example.

I'm just saying the money bothered me more than the length of contract. If it was a 1 year deal at 6 million, at least he'd be off the books come next offseason, but we're stuck paying him $5 million each of the next 2 years after that.

But a difference of 1 million dollars between the first season at 5 and the 1 yr deal you use as an example is fairly inconsequential within a $100m payroll. Your point is that you would be glad his contract is off the books after one year, so don't the years actually bother you more than the money?

If we're going to platoon Jones (which would be the smart thing to do), we already have someone on our roster who can hit lefties (Murton). Why overpay for another mediocre outfielder who is supposed to platoon with Jones when, in reality, he'll just take away playing time away from Murton anyways. We should still try and trade for Huff, and then platoon Jones and Murton. Together, they might salvage right field.

I don't agree with signing him at all much less for 3 years but the price per year is in-line with what he was already making (5 million last year)..

Well, you've done it Hendry. Despite your Dusty-colored glasses, I was willing to give you the benefit of the doubt. Like everyone else, I hated the Neifi re-signing, but I still held a little bit of hope that you had something up your sleeve. Eyre, Howry, Pierre? Pretty good players all -- none of them world beaters, but at least I could feel comfortable with what they brought to the table. Given the circumstances, I could even live with a one year stop gap of whatever you wanted to put out in RF, even if it was Jacque Jones. I wouldn't neccesarily like it, but I understand the realities of the current marketplace.

But this, you've got to be out of your mind. Three years for Jacque friggin Jones!?! You witless, incompetent buffoon. You've actually put me into a position to root against the Chicago Cubs next year if only to hopefully witness your frumpy hindquarters being disgracefully discharged from this two-bit operation along with that imbecilic toothpick wrangler you call a manager.

Of course, that is probably just a pipe dream as well. MacPhail appears to have as little sense as you do. Hell, you'll probably get an extension.

Murton is suppose to play fulltime in LF. If Jones is platooned the Cubs will acquire another hitter.

Strangely enough, I thought that Southside was referring to Tree's OTHER idea earlier in the thread..

Oh, you mean like how Dubois was supposed to play in left and how Ronny is supposed to play shortstop next year? Face it, if we sign someone like Wilson, they're playing everyday over Murton.

Fans from every other team are laughing at us right now. I think I even hear Marlins' fans laughing at us and their entire team was just uprooted.

At first, I did too. But then SSR mentioned not finding his USB - unless this is some new-fashioned heroin-consuming method.*

*Not that I know anything about consuming heroin.

This is the best picture I could find online to sum up my feelings. And I'm not really sure it worked anyways.
