I agree about Jones. I wouldn't be adverse to calling up Pie by June 1. Pie will struggle offensively in his first years in the majors, but he has shown an ability to adjust that CPatt just didn't have.

The above is a short excerpt from an article up on Baseball Prospectus right now. In baseball, maybe more than any other sport, I would not give up on a guy with personality issues. Jeff Kent is a huge jerk, but I'd rather have him at second base than Mark Derosa. I'd rather have JD Drew than Willy Taveras and Ryan Church than Angel Pagan, too. Kent and JD have performed at a high level in the majors for a number of years. Sisco hasn't.

Other than the money, which the Tribune seems to have, I don't see a downside to signing Marquis. If he rebounds, great. If not, by that time one of the Cubs pitching prospects or Prior likely will have earned a spot in the starting rotation. Marquis is both a hedge and a bet for Hendry. you really think they're just going to cast him aside when he signed a 3 year, 21 mil contract? it took rusch becoming the worst pitcher in baseball before they took him out of the rotation, and they had a lot less committed to him. If Guzman or another young prospect develops into a good pitcher over the next year, the additonal cost to the major league payroll is almost nil. The Cubs could eat a fair portion of Marquis' contract and trade him to another team. Aren't we talking about doing that very thing with Jacque because Felix Pie will be ready by midseason?

Another franchise (Royals), desperate for starting pitching, trades Sisco for a generic bench player. Speaks volumes about Sisco's makeup, doesn't it? Possibly. I found it to be really strange that the Royals didn't send him to AAA last year to stretch him back out in a starting role. It will be interesting to see what the Sox do with him. I agree. Even if Sisco had failed to take to a starting role, the Royals always could have returned him to the pen.
