Perhaps being delusional on my end, but i almost feel like Detmers is in Hoyer's backpocket but this thing with the Rangers was so unexpected that having the ability to check in on Degrom/Gore is too much to pass up. The Cubs land Degrom and the rotation suddenly looks quite good.

Degrom/Boyd/Gausman/Shota/Brown would be a pretty nasty 1-5

Yeah, I wouldn't put them out. as Cozart is more of a backup and Ayers...well doesn't look that way. With that said, it might change the calculus a bit. For example, maybe Rojas becomes more attractive now.

As Matt has pointed out, Texas gives the Cubs leverage. I really like where the Cubs are at in the market. They have a lot of places to run to and not everyone is going to be able to sell.

I know we're programmed to think "all HR's are a pitcher's fault" but he's +5 on xHR. Meaning it should be a lot lower. He's going to give up home runs, it's part of his game, but he has a sparkling xFIP and I think he needs to normalize.

Feels that way. Last year Miami and the Nationals held almost all of the cards when it came to controllable SP. This year, you have options and a lot of rental options. The Cubs really have options to play each other off. 

I don't think the Angels can be left holding the bag on Detmers after moving off of Soriano and Adell. I don't think the Rangers want to keep all the money. The Mets suck and need to cash in on arms. There's a lot of movement you can find here.

I’m in on deGrom, but why is he giving up so much hard contact this year? Anybody concerned by that or no? Everything else under the hood looks good

He's always given up barrels. Even looking back three or four or five years ago. His hard hit% has been relatively high for the last three years. Think he just gives up more hard contact as he ages, but the whiff and everything is still so good that it's easily hidden.

Pros/Cons of the Rangers guys IMO

- Eovaldi probably and deGrom definiteky are better than Detmers and certainly more battle tested

- Those two guys are controllable, but at hefty salaries.  There's still value in carrying them into '27 but it's not nearly as valuable from a holistic team building perspective as like Detmers making ~$5M

- Because of the $$$ (and age) they will cost much less in prospects

- Gore is IMO as talented as anyone we've talked about, and I'm not worried about the inflated ERA.  That said he's certainly been up and down for his career so far.  He's also not controlled as long as the other guys, just this year and next

Hoo boy, any of these 3 would automatically rate as an improvement on Boyd/Shota, and it'd be mission accomplished at the deadline.  Shoot, pick up Jacob Latz in a package deal and we're commemorating coins for this TDl alone.

Wrote about this here, but yeah: I'm calling it 'controllable,' distinct from capital-C Controllable. They would have these guys next year. Not quite the same as a Detmers or a Kirby thing, but if the price difference is big enough.....

I know it's not a thing yet, but with a new CBA looming - is it possible that reducing the amount of "controllable years" from 6 to 5 (or lower) is hanging over Jed's assessment?
