He isn't the sharpest tool in the shed. It will take a long time for him to learn a new position

I don’t know his wonderlic score, but he’s been a pretty quick study in OF and third base last year.

Did not realize Assad was starting this game.  If you weren't already rooting for Mexico it feels even more obvious now.

Apparently Derosa thought they were already through to the next round regardless of the outcome last night.  What a moron.

He said the guys were celebrating  after the Mexico game and "were dragging a bit" before the Italy game.

Yep, they were celebrating because they thought they were in the next round already.

Assad has pitched pretty well so far (3 innings).

I was about to root for Mexico, because of Assad, but I want the US to advance.  So, I'm rooting for Assad and Italy.😀

Rea gave up 3 HR in 4 innings today. after Horton got shelled yesterday.  Journalist told Counsell the other day he's heard rumors of maybe some changes to the ball (whether inadvertent or intentional). Counsell said he's not going to speculate on something like that in ST, would at least wait until season to see.  Said AZ isn't an easy pitching environment.

Probably got worth worrying about at all.

US has more or less clinched.  I think the game has to go like 12 innings at this point.

I kind of hope Team USA gets booted from the tournament.

5-0 Italy. If Mexico comes back we make it based on tiebreaker

At the game. Shaw looked awful at first base. Broke toward the ball on every play, always late to the bag. Error was ugly.

I was used to playing ss or center and tweaked my elbow and had to play 1st and it sucked. So weird not reacting to the ball

I would also prefer the first baseman to be taller than 5'6".

Now, it's 6-0.

Social media says that Mexico would have to win in a game lasting into the 14th inning for the US to be eliminated at this point.  I was kind of hoping that Mexico would win with like 6-7 (edit: horsefeathers) runs scoring meaning those 2 PCA HRs made the difference in the US advancing, but this is fine too.

Having him learn 1b on top of 3 OF positions while trying to stay sharp at 3 other INF positions is a terrible idea.  Plus he's only a 2nd year player still trying to learn to hit in the MLB.

The things they've asked of him in his first 2 seasons is wild.  At least they have faith in his abilities I guess.

How does extras affect the tie breaker

The tiebreaker after H2H is “runs allowed/outs recorded”. So if the game extends, the team will record more outs and thus their ratio will get smaller, eventually with enough outs passing the US

Anecdotally it seems like a Cactus League thing across all the teams, been watching a couple games daily and will take Grapefruit over Cactus whenever possible because the pitching in Arizona is just abysmal. Every game you throw on its a pitcher tossing batting practice.

I'm happy someone else said it. I have too much self respect to start running spring training numbers on a league wide basis, but there have been a lot of crooked numbers on the scoreboard. I had put it somewhat on the climate conditions and somewhat on the current pitching ramp up procedures being even more about processes than results than normal....a new ball would add to that.

It certainly hasn't helped my overall concerns about the pitching staff, but coming up to Chicago in a couple weeks (snowed today) is basically a different sport.

Edit: Just out of curiosity/boredom, looked at the early schedule from a location standpoint.

  • 6 at Wrigley
  • 3 in Cleveland (outdoors)
  • 3 in Tampa (outdoors? but Florida)
  • 3 at Wrigley
  • 3 in Philly (outdoors)
  • 7 at Wrigley

There's a chance that only 3 out of our first 25 games are in good weather. West coast trip after that to get us into May.

You say that, but there have already been at least 3 days in the 70's already this year, and one of those was in the 80's. Monday was 38 degrees above normal in my area.

The Cactus league as a whole appears to have a 5.78 ERA.  Last year it was 5.51.

Rare rain and humidity the last couple days. 93 today, should dry out. Yesterday was a bad day to pitch: rare hot humid day in AZ.

Glad Steele isn't back until May. In fact lets shut down Cabrera and Horton until its 70 degrees at wrigley.

On Steele: He was taking PFP yesterday on field 3. He wants to be back so bad.
