Are you suggesting we just let them go to save some money?  Because post-deadline waiver trades aren't a thing anymore

Yeah, like how the angels did last year

I'm most surprised Tauchman is still around.  It's not like they have a shortage of OFers.

Tauchman’s in an awkward spot timing-wise because I think you want one of him or Cody on next year's team but not both.

Speaking of things that are dependent on the Cody decision, Robert surviving the White Sox roster purge is great for us.  He's a guy who's fit on our roster for next year can vary significantly based on what Bellinger and PCA's next three months look like.

I am surprised but I'm cool with keeping Tauchman as our fourth OF. Not like the return would be very much and he can still help us win games now, even though a WC spot is not likely

It's crazy that the Dodgers just keep adding and adding and adding

Sigh!  If only cubs could play with the big boys

Isaac Paredes is the most valuable player moved at this deadline by a considerable margin, what are we doing here?

Dodgers seemingly have a bottomless barrel of money and a bottomless system of prospects.

I marvel at their ability to pick at the back-end of the 1st-2nd every year and end up with a highly-coveted prospect every single time. it's incredible.

My quote was a response to dodgers adding adding and adding. We only added once in terms of big boy additions

I officially feel bad for their fan base now. Reinsdorf should be forced to sell.

I don’t.

We have a trade deadline where we should sell and a market in which people are overpaying, and somehow we come out closer to buyers. I'm a little dead right now

Very surprised Smyly especially is still here.  I wonder if they valued the ability to cover some innings more than the nominal return.

Canario too.

What about the return for our best reliever fills you with regret that we didn’t trade any of our roster flotsam?

As much as it was a “sellers market”, not 1 top 100 prospect was traded and the Cubs acquired the best player available that has 2025 (and beyond) control.

I think it’s possible that nobody wanted any of our guys with 2025 money owed/potentially owed (Taillon, Belli, Neris, Smyly buyout). I doubt Jed was holding to make a WC push this season.

So with pencils down, my initial thoughts on this deadline season.

Things I Like:

- Isaac Paredes is not my favorite profile, but Jed added a player somewhere between very good and great at a position of dire immediate need and did so while keeping the powder for 2025, both dollars and prospects, largely dry

- Because Jed held off on selling Taillon or any outfielders, the team's to-do list for this winter is pretty mild.  Catcher and relief help are musts, but any other additions can be about finding the best players and not paying a premium to plug specific holes

- Nate Pearson is like the platonic ideal of a reliever you should add in a position like the Cubs are in currently.  Glove perfect move

Things I Don't Like:

- They should have done something at catcher.  If the plan is to address the position via trade no reason not to do it now.  If the plan is a free agent, I still think two back of the top 30 prospects to give Danny Jansen a thorough audition is worth it given the farm's depth.  Maybe add a 2nd division starter or a near ready prospect you especially like.  But fixing catcher before next spring is too important to be like "oh it's fine we'll handle it in December"

- I would have liked more done with the bullpen.  Personally blowing it up and building the whole thing out of Iowa stuff monsters was my preferred path.  But even if there are soft factors why you want some veterans in the mix I think adding another Pearson type (ideally a lefty) would have been prudent

- I feel like there was probably some opportunity to zig while the industry zagged.  This is the first deadline ever where a top 100 prospect (by BA at least) didn't change hands.  In an era of hyper prospect hugging what could you have gotten if you put out there that e.g James Triantos is burning a hole in your pocket?

After this trade deadline there is no reason we shouldn’t be huge players on a guy like Soto. We did nothing to upgrade our offense. That’s our struggle now and will continue till we gain some pop in the lineup.

Pretty much any catcher can be upgrade or even split. Or are we waiting out for Moises?

we can trade hoerner if Shaw is offensive upgrade. But is he ready yet?

Went from 3B with 94 wRC+ to 3B with 128 wRC+, I'd call that a fairly significant upgrade.

Just asking this, because: why didn't jed move mervis and canario??? They realistically do not have a spot on the team. Are they now just warm bodied space fillers in case of injury for the remainder of 24?

Canario is hurt and Mervis isn't a guy who anyone would be adding to help this year, so if he's going to get moved the offseason makes a lot more sense.  In either case, you're not getting much in return beyond another Cuas type project or a real low level guy, which is probably more likely with the current 40 man crunch.

Move them for what? They'll probably sign minor league contracts with some org after the season and maybe become semi-viable MLB players in 2-3 years. Their arrows are pointing way down. Both are barely above league average at their level.
