Giving up a second is dumb when you could just sign him for no picks this off-season, he's not going to impact your ability to make the playoffs this season, and whatever improvement in the team he creates will just make it more unlikely you get one of the top picks to be able to draft a QB. Just dumb all around.

I think it's pretty obvious that he wasn't gonna hit FA.  He was being shopped and was gonna get locked up to an extension, almost certainly.

It was reported by dc media that a mystery team wanted to trade for him and sign an extension. The bears were that team, apparently. I’m not sure another team wanted to do it.

but it’s beyond ridiculous to avoid addressing an obvious need in both the draft and free agency in back to back seasons and then trading a draft pick for the rights to sign a guy to fix your problem. This is especially true when none of your own picks have been impactful.

I get “they agree with Kyle’s faith in Bagent” vibes with this trade, meaning they think they can steal some wins and make that 2nd rounder closer to 40.

That would be an ...interesting choice.

If they were 3-5 I think you could make a thin case for hoping to get lucky and beat all the bad teams and get to 9-8, but I don't see how that's even thinly feasible from here

And it's especially bad because even if you think that Bagent has some upside, which I do, you should still be drafting a QB next year so there's no point in playing yourself out of drafting a good one.

Yeah, this is my biggest issue. They had 2 offseasons of money (1 with the most money). They've had 2 drafts (1 with a ton of picks/flexibility). They had every chance to put the team in position to NOT have to try to circumvent a weak FA market and/or draft by trading picks for a position everyone knew you ignored in said offseason(s).

I think this Sweat trade only makes sense if Jaylon Johnson is remaining a Bear.  Right?  It's the only context that seems feasible.

Probably not in Poles’ mind. If he can get a 2nd he’ll call it a wash on the picks even if it goes from 33 to 60. If he can get a 3rd he’ll probably be just as happy. He drafted a half dozen defensive backs* for a reason.

Their own 1st pick sits at 3 right now, with some bad teams trending worse. I could see them viewing Carolina, Arizona, Minnesota and Green Bay as winnable games that would leave them at 6-11. That would make their 2nd rounder somewhere in the 37-39 range.

I can't discount Poles being the only GM in on it and still getting swindled unfortunately.  Hopefully there were some other bidders involved in that price.  Common sense and logic along with reports pointed to Washington clearing their DL glut rather than lose one for nothing.  I do think other teams were in on it and would have swooped him up, if a Bears weren't highest bidder.

There has to be an extension already worked out with Sweat, right?  This doesn’t make any sense at all if not.

I'd put some substantial money on it. If Poles gave up, what is basically a 1st round pick, for half a season of a guy in which they wont make the playoffs, he'd almost definitely be fired.

I think Poles letting Jaylon see if he can get a better offer on an extension from another team so he can either match it or trade him if the # ends up too much. I don’t think Jaylon is going to get what he wants in the end and remains a Bears.

Hopefully he isn't from the Pat Williams school of contract demands.

Right...think of how much leverage Sweat would have right now if the Bears traded a 2nd round pick for 1/2 seaso of him and didn't have at least the framework of an extension agreed to.  I mean I wouldn't put it past the Bears to do something that stupid, but on the surface it makes no sense.

Not sure how you can have an extension worked out without the word tampering being involved. I guess if you know you can't be outbid, you can feel comfortable going after a guy who is probably looking to break the bank.

Pretty sure teams can grant you permission to speak with/negotiate with one of their players.  Why wouldn't washington...if Sweat agrees to terms on an extension they are able to theoretically get a higher return for him.

So if no Williams, Harbaugh isn't interested? Personally I don't really care because I'm ambivalent on Harbaugh, but I don't think I've ever heard a coach is a heavy favorite to a team only if they land a specific prospect.
