Sunday "I hope the Cubs buy but don't spend too much to improve on this flawed team"

Tuesday "Ugh why didn't the Cubs do more, this team is so flawed"

How much could a left handed pen arm like Suter cost? They probably don't even touch their top 20.

I'm pretty happy. I'm not a fan of the "ALL OR NOTHING YOU'RE EITHER CRAZY IN OR YOU'RE SELLING EVERYTHING FOR PROSPECTS" approach.  Just play baseball.  We cleaned up our future 40-man situation and got a small but tangible upgrade for our longish-shot playoff run.

Really hoped for a lefty reliever but so it goes. This was always gonna be the approach if we were buyers.

Marlins were busy at the end there. Swapped Garrett Cooper for Dave Weathers' kid. Interesting deal.

I'd sure like to have seen more help for the pen, but I'm largely all right with how this went. I think we've got a punchers chance, but there are a lot of holes, and I don't think the roster is strong enough to have justified going all in.

No relief pitcher? What’s the point of getting just Candy.

Well, he significantly helps the team.

Definitely, but probably not enough if they want to go deep into playoffs (if they get there). Either way, happy to see Candy added and Mancini gone.

I agree, they can still call up Brown or another arm from AAA too if they want another bullpen piece.

They did slightly better then standing pat I guess. I think we'll probably slightly regret the win streak and not selling because I dont have much faith in the playoffs and Bellinger easily would have been the best bat on the market. But Stroman tanked his value, and Bellinger can be offered the QO. Maybe they can get lucky and pull something off. The rest of the season should be more fun atleast. Hopefully they can keep supplementing the bullpen through the farm and it finishes as a strength.

I think someone pointed out too that Cuas we got from KC has reverse splits so maybe they tinker in Iowa and call him back up. Also could be setting to give someone like Bailey Horn a look.

I wouldn't call it reverse splits on Cuas so much as he's got weird splits.  He strikes out more lefties, but walks a ton more lefties.  His xFIP against LHH is 4.15 and his xFIP against RHP is 4.30 but his FIP against LHH is way higher than his FIP against RHH.  RHH are hitting way better against him than LHH.  In theory he should be a RHH killer; side arm, slider/fastball combo is usually just that, but these are all over the place scattershot.

The Royals have him all jacked up.  I think there's a guy there, though.

Luke Little has 24 K's in his last 12 IP (and a stint on the Dev list).  If he can fix some control issues, he could speed run his way into a BP spot.  Maybe we see Ben Brown get a look in the Cubs BP too.

Probably not a lot. Would Sutter have put them over the tax? Since they're so scared of the tax they might have had to try to trade Mancini before making an additional move but weren't able to.

Apparently Nationals ate down the entire contract to league minimum.

Stroman didn't tank his value any more or less than Lucas Giolito did the past month and Giolito still fetched the White Sox what is now their 3rd best prospect.

Just an overall dud of a deadline. Was Candelario enough to avoid that pitching market like the plague?

Funny this thread went from a list of hopeful relievers they add to well maybe we'll see this kid or this kid cone up and pitch..lol

The pain of being a cubs fan 😅

Given the context of everything else that didn't happen...can someone explain the logic of that dumb ass Rays trade again? I don't think we're within $600k of the cap.

With the way the Cubs have handled Thompson and Steele, I'm wondering if they'll utilize Wesneski/Brown/Wicks in swing roles as those guys start to approach their IP limits, while keeping the door open for possible rotation spot/s in 2024.

That being said, Brown looks like a future closer to me.  He has some filthy stuff.

Maybe leaving room for DFAs in August?  I dunno
