Definitely, but probably not enough if they want to go deep into playoffs (if they get there). Either way, happy to see Candy added and Mancini gone.

Well the pen isn't that bad.  Pen ERA is 2nd in baseball since June 1.

Palencia has been good, Alzolay, Leiter are very good, Merryweather is decent, Wesneski and Assad hopefully pitch well.  That's 6 guys potentially effective, plus the new Cuas guy and Estrada/Thompson are still bumping around in AAA, plus Bailey Horn and I guess Ben Brown but they probably would keep him stretched.  Maybe Fulmer's control improves too.

Thought you weren't gonna come

I had to get that off my chest, because that was about as misguided a deadline approach as their offseason moves.

I doubt I post half as much as I did on PSD because I work evenings now so watching games is only an option when I'm off.

Regardless, welcome to our dysfunctionally enjoyable corner of the internet!

2 months of Candelario and Bellinger,  let enjoy it ...

Hopefully we'll see one or two of the young SP get a couple starts in September

I don't really want any of our young SP to get starts?  Ben Brown can't throw strikes, Jordan Wicks just got there and isn't exactly lighting it up.

Alonso and ohtani off-season would be amazing.

also I’m in on a Belli extension if we trade Seiya. I think you could do that and make things work. Might not be able to buy much pitching tho.

Yes, after much reflection I too would be ok with an Alonso, Ohtani and Bellinger offseason.

If we're talking offseason, I really want Yoshinobu Yamamoto over any of Eduardo Rodriguez, Aaron Nola or Julio Urias.

Yep. Add him and Ohtani. I'd be fine trading for Alonso, but would want to exclude the top 5-6 guys from the deal. He's a 1B, only under control for one year, etc.

I waffle a lot on extending Bellinger. The back end of that contract is likely to look ugly. I was firmly against extending him because his batted ball data looks so meh, but I've softened on that. I guess it depends on how much confidence there is in PCA having immediate impact. Having Bellinger in there most certainly makes the '24 and '25 teams look a lot better, though.

I keep forgetting about that guy. You already know Hoyer is going to be all over him because of his talent + age.

Apparently Jesse Rogers said this morning that the Yankees would have given up Jasson Dominguez + for Bellinger and that they were desperate for him. Dominguez is very intriguing and toolsy as hell, but he’s having a down year. He is just 20 in AA though. It doesn’t matter now, I just thought that was interesting.

Shouldn't have lost 2 of 3 to the Cubs then

A fun look at what some of the starters have done in their first start, or two, since being traded

Scherzer went 6IP 7H 3ER 2BB 9K against the WSox.

Lorenzen went 8IP 6 2ER 1BB 5K against the Marlins

Giolito in 2 games has gone 9IP 14H 12ER 4 BB 7K in starts vs. Atlanta and Toronto

Jack Flaherty is currently pitching and so far 3IP 1H 0ER 1B 5K vs Toronto.

I'm personally cheering for Jack Flaherty to be amazing the rest of the year.

I'm torn. It would be funny if he was amazing as soon as he left St. Louis, but I also don't want to see Baltimore be rewarded for being a bunch of cheap asses at the trade deadline.

Yeah, but I care more about StL feeling bad than I do about Baltimore feeling good.

Plus Flaherty is a good dude and I was waiting for him to leave the Cardinals so I could like him

The second he started supporting BLM the fans turned on him. Also, he's completely dominating today.

5IP 1H 0ER 1BB 7K on only 58 pitches

Apparently there was a lot of griping from front offices about the 6:00 EDT deadline for deals.  I actually kind of like this suggestion:

Quote

“I’ve always thought that everyone should have the day off. There’s no reason it can’t always be on a Monday or a Thursday and everyone can’t have it off. We’re getting enough attention as a sport that day. We don’t also need to roll out and play a game. … That way, you make your roster moves, and you move forward, and it’s just the way to go.”

I could totally see a "Trade Deadline Day" Monday where they have no games and make an extravaganza out of it like they do the draft.

So I suppose that Mike Lorenzen trade is working out ok for the Phillies.

2 GS 17IP 6H 2ER 10K 5BB including a no hitter last night

Obviously with that K/9 and .111 babip that's not going to last, but that's about as good a start as you could hope for.

For fun. Jeimer's line since joining the Cubs

.485/.541/.727 good for a 246 wRC+

FWIW, Lopez isn't a FA and seems to have a fit in Atlanta as just that role that you're describing, so he specifically probably isn't on the market.

As for the offseason on the whole, with napkin math I think that roster is probably ~55 million over the LT, which even if there's a more aggressive 'with Ohtani' budget due to his revenue bump, doesn't strike me as particularly realistic.  Especially with no huge deals coming off the payroll after 2024, ~25 million thanks to dead money(Mancini + Bote), Smyly, and the catchers.

My working assumption is that they'll be willing to go into the LT this year(even without Ohtani), but probably something like ~10 million without him and potentially ~20 million with him.  As such, most of the big spending would probably coalesce around something like Ohtani + Candelario or Bellinger + FA SP + bat(e.g. Alonso).
