We have to remember that Mervis was a pitcher until his Junior year of college, he's not like every other 25 year old.

Missing key developmental years is never a point in a prospect's favor

If a job happens to open up for him, maybe he'll seize the opportunity.

Funnily enough, there is job open for him with the Chicago Cubs.

He might be something.  He probably won't be.  If a job happens to open up for him, maybe he'll seize the opportunity.  That's true of a lot of guys.

The Cubs' 1B situation is about as open as it gets, minus Tauchman complicating things a bit.

And he was given an opportunity to seize it

That's a move. I don't mind moving Velasquez at all. Hopefully they can fix Cuas. Sure hope they've still got another bullpen move coming.

I think this move was to clear space to make room for PCA in AAA, and add some relief depth in Iowa.

I don't think any of the relievers traded for so far will end up on the MLB team soon, more trades to come for legit relievers.

99 PAs is not an opportunity to seize it, especially when it's spread over over almost 45 days.

There's only so many MLB pas to go around.  We aren't obligated to give every late-round, overage, non-top-100 prospect a full season to figure it out

As the only active Major League player older than me, keep this thing going as long as possible Rich!

I've got 8, and boy is that depressing.

Rich Hill, Nelson Cruz, Adam Wainwright, Justin Verlander, Miguel Cabrera, Jesse Chavez, Joey Votto and Zach Greinke.  Keep on going guys!  Especially you Wainwright, you are keeping Ian Happ's career alive.

You realize you're advocating for Mancini right now right? Sure Mervis might suck, but we know unequivocally that Mancini does in fact suck. There is literally nothing to lose and at they very least they would find out that Mervis is no part of the 2024 plan if he bombs.

While that is true, the Cubs wasted another 94 at bats on Eric Hosmer.  It would have been nice to have just given Mervis that opportunity from the start.  Maybe it still would have ended up the same way, but Hosmer was never going to work out.

Cross Nelson Cruz off, as I don't believe he is currently active.

No, but I think he should get or have gotten a good everyday opportunity to at least see if he can adjust.

I can see Hoyer trading him today and then seeing him becoming an AS type player like Soler in a couple seasons.

I just looked up Alonso's numbers and I was surprised they weren't better outside of his rookie year.  He would look good in the Cubs lineup but I don't think you can go overboard here.

Wasn’t 2019 the juiced ball year when like 2/3 of the teams set franchise single season home run records? If so, doubt you’re getting that Alonso again but it also means he probably hasn’t gotten much worse. They just have a normal ball now.

trade stroman, trade for cease

The cost is supposedly crazy high and, while he isn't a free agent until 2026, his results have only been really good one year while the others they're been more solid than anything else.

He put up a 4.4 fWAR each of the last 2 years (11th in the league both times), and is on pace for 3.9 this year (15th in baseball). Small step back this year but absolutely an elite pitcher.

Some of y'all speak of Mervis as if he's a 35 year old journeyman. He barely has 1000 pro PAs. We do not know what he is yet.

Barely 1,000? That’s not a small number.

yes, fWAR loves him, but the actual results haven't been great. A 4.15 and 3.91 ERA are solid and the 2.20 is nuts, but looking like an outlier. He might be a victim of bad defense, I'm not sure, but the actual production has not matched the peripherals.

Between 2020-2023, the White Sox have been pretty damn bad defensively at a -102 DRS.  This is only better than Oakland, Washington and the Phillies.  I'm inclined to believe Dylan Cease's peripherals (which are better indicators of future performance than things like ERA) are closer to what type of a pitcher Cease is.
