The Blue Jays are close to acquiring left-hander Clayton Richard from the Padres, Ben Nicholson-Smith of Sportsnet reports. Richard has been in limbo since the Padres designated him for assignment on Dec. 20.

Someone has to take Stroman's spot in the rotation after we trade for him.

If Monty were to be involved in a trade Richard would’ve been a nice pickup to take his spot. Fine depth move for the Jays and maybe they can flip him at some point.

Seems like an odd team for him to pick, assuming they still get Machado. That infield is crowded and since they are trying to win he won’t get the benefit to play through struggles if he has some rust to work off. Good move by the Yankees though as it’s essentially free and good depth.

I think it's a great fit. He's a cheap option to fill in for however long Gregorious is out. If they can get anything at all out of him, then they don't have to rush Gregorious back.

For the Yankees it’s a fine fit. For Tulo it just seems like an odd choice and place to pick because he might not see as much playing time as he would with other teams, especially if he starts slow and gets buried behind guys.

Gotcha...I somehow misread your previous post.

Saw this on MLBTR:

Troy Tulowitzki was impressive enough in his December 16th showcase to draw genuine interest from as many as 16 major league clubs, per Andy Martino of SNY.tv. The Cubs were reportedly willing to hand Tulo their starting shortstop position at least until the end of Addison Russell‘s suspension.

and it makes no sense

I think all it says about Baez is they don't care whether he's a SS or a 2b. It would have impacted Zobrist's PT, not Javy's.

This is more about getting a second guy on the roster who can play SS, hopefully with an eye toward putting Russell on an escalator to nowhere but at minimum coverage for the month he's suspended.

I don't know about handing Tulo the starting SS job, but it certainly had something to do with money.

Huh? Any team he signed with only pays the league minimum for him.

Using Tulo and dumping Russell would have saved us $3.5 million too.

I'd really have liked that but I also don't think Tulo will be 100 percent healthy ever again so

Yeah, not likely with his injury history added to his age.

I'm guessing that if Toronto thought he was 100% healthy, they would have kept him to start the season and then try to trade him. Even if they ate most of the salary to get a decent return, that's what they're doing now anyway with no payback at all other than goodwill.

I don’t believe this scenario lands them anything worthwhile anyway. He’s 34, missed all of last year, and hasn’t hit since 2014. Maybe the Jays send cash but any team trading for him is probably paying more than the league min and has him under contract through 2020 off of a partial season. Maybe the Jays cost themselves a Jeferson Mejia type “prospect” but most likely they saved all sides lots of nonsense drama by cutting him during the offseason rather than in-season

What I'm saying is that if they thought he was 100% healthy, they'd keep him and play him until the trade deadline. If he's healthy, he proves his value and someone will pay up. If not, they've literally not cost themselves anything but playing time on a team going nowhere.

Toronto doesn't let him go for nothing unless they are pretty confident he's toast.

Too bad he wasn't worth Jason Heyward and some cash...

Multiple relievers I'm hearing the #Cubs have had recent discussions with. Kelvin Herrera, Brad Brach, and Oliver Perez. #HotStove
