I re-watched the highlights from last night....how terrible was the route Grichuk took on Hammel's double in the 1st? He immediately charges to his right to attempt to catch it, but he never had a shot so eventually he slows up to let it drop but he ran in too much and the ball basically bounced 5-7 feet to his right and by him for a double that would have easily been a triple for most non-pitchers.

Video of the play:

I was in the left center bleachers and had a great view of the play. It was comically bad and I immediately made fun of him for it, especially since it happened right after he couldn't catch Ross' ball.

You can find weird statistical anomalies for any team if you look hard enough. You just tend to look really hard at the Cardinals.

An individual player's RISP vs. nobody on BA for 2 months is definitely in the category of anomalies that you could find on any team. However, it jumps out more to us because of things like the whole team having a historic BARISP one season followed by a historic strand rate the following season. They've often outperformed their peripherals as a team, but in a vacuum the Piscotty statistic is no big deal.

Now Diaz being good when he's most needed? That's annoying.

Let's not forget this year's team anomaly, being on pace for 36 pinch hit home runs.

To be honest whatever fluky stuff they got going on hardly bothers me when they're 1 game over .500, buried in the standings and totally irrelevant.

Maybe they'll make a push this season but I don't see it. Let em enjoy their random gritty white dudes OPSing .850, I hope they enjoy their 85 wins and being 20 games back in September

WASHINGTON -- St. Louis Cardinals shortstop Jhonny Peralta cut his right thumb while opening a box Saturday and will be delayed in his return from an injury to his other thumb as a result.

Peralta, on a rehab assignment with Double-A Springfield, had to get three stitches and will not play for three or four days, manager Mike Matheny said.

Peralta cut himself while using a knife on his birthday, an eerily similar injury to the one Matheny sustained when he was a Cardinals catcher in 2000. Matheny sliced his thumb on his birthday while examining a hunting knife he had received as a gift and had to have surgery to repair a tendon.

i feel like it's easy to understand if someone cuts themselves chopping food (I've done it and I've watched a horsefeathers ton of Chopped episodes - so I'm basically an expert on the subject). But, how the hell does someone cut themselves with a knife trying to open a box? Or, better yet, "examining a new hunting knife?

A box cutter -- HGH tends to come in pretty legit packaging these days.

There are plenty of plastic packages that are awkward and nigh impossible to open, leading to cuts and gouges. Of course you just have to be smart enough to not use a knife to open them, but not everyone is. If it was just a basic box, I have no idea how that happens.

I almost cut my hand badly opening a big bubba filet knife from its plastic. Those knives are sharp as hell, i tugged a bit harder than i thought i did and it came right out of the packaging and missed my hand by an eyelash. Made me feel like a moron, but i suppose thats better than i would have felt if it connected.

Though it meant little to the outcome aside from spoiling Milwaukee's shutout bid, Brandon Moss' solo homer in Wednesday's 3-1 loss added another pinch-hit blast to the Cardinals' growing season list.

With the team's 10th pinch-hit home run of 2016, the Cardinals, 54 games into their season, have already tied their franchise record, established by the 1998 club. They're also quickly closing in on the Major League record of 14, set by the 2001 Giants and 2001 D-backs.

we are only ONE-THIRD of the way through the season!
