The short list of teams Hamels cannot block a trade in 2014 (according to Cots):

Atlanta, Boston, LA Angels, LA Dodgers, NY Yankees, San Diego, St. Louis, Texas and Washington

The short list of teams Hamels cannot be traded to in 2014 anymore:

- Everyone but the Cubs.

Yeah, I wasn't really posting the list to point out that we aren't on that list as much as I was posting it to show the short list of suitors the Phillies can even work a trade with if Cole invokes the NTC. The list gets even shorter when considering the amount of teams willing to take on that big contract and the years attached to it. The Phillies don't have much bargaining power if they are considering moving him/payroll.

More fodder for the Hamels-to-Cubs rumors: Sources say Cubs ARE on his approved trade list. Turns out Red Sox are NOT on that list

I just couldn't move any of Baez/Bryant/Soler/Russell for a guy who missed the first month of the season with shoulder issues and is still being paid 20+M a year. Even Alcantara would make me extremely nervous and require Amaro to eat a good amount of money.

Yeah, no doubt the only way Amaro deals Hamels is if he sees it as a way to kickstart a rebuild/reload process, so he'll ask for more than the FO will want to give up, I fear.

I'll be absolutely stunned if anything comes of this.

are we ever going to stop acting like vogelbach is some great trade chip? sub .800 OPS as a supposed slugging 1b. nobody's falling over themselves to trade for him.

Yeah, probably need to stop that. Guys without positions need to have absolutely elite bats. He has never put up elite numbers. Probably not going to at this point.

So someone with a low K rate, high walk rate, and good power potential can't be sold a valuable trade chip?

Valuable? Yes. Great? No, which is what I responded to and agreed with. He's slightly better than a Mike Olt type in the Garza trade.

He's already a more polished hitter than Olt.

Yeah, there's just about a zero percent chance that anything gets done. Amaro has already shown he has unreasonable expectations about what Hamels should return in a trade. And maybe there was a chance he'd get it when playoff teams were shopping for upgrades, but the Cubs aren't under the same market pressure to add wins this season.

I'd be shocked if the Cubs were willing to include someone of Almora's prospect status. Vogelbach, and spare parts maybe.

Then the Cubs have unreasonable expectations about what Hamels should return too

Do they?

Hamels is signed for 4/96 after this year. He's a 4 fWAR pitcher on the wrong side of 30 with recent injury issues. He's worth almost exactly what he's getting paid.

If the Cubs want to acquire Hamels, they need to do so for a prospect cost of less than they feel Lester and Scherzer are likely to overpaid by. Otherwise, what's the point? Almora straight up would probably be just about an even match for that figure, but when was the last time you saw a guy like Hamels traded straight up for a guy in the middle of a team's top 10 list? Amaro is going to insist on other good prospects in the deal. I don't see our front office doing it. And I don't think they're wrong.

Thanks Dave Cameron

Also, him being in the middle of OUR top 10 list shouldn't' be relevant.

While i wouldn't give up a bunch to get Hamels, it would be great to have Hamels, Turner and Castillo before the offseason even begins. Add Soler, and that's a potential competing team with no more moves and Bryant and Russell still in our back pocket.

God I want them to get Hamels in this situation. Such a great opportunity.

I do too, but admit that I'm too attached to prospects right now to objectively evaluate value here. We've waited sooo long that I almost feel like not seeing some of these guys in a Cubs uniform would be disappointing.

That's why I'm irrationally OK with including Addison Russell in a deal for him--I feel much less invested in him than I am in Javy, Bryant, Almora, Soler, etc..

[expletive] it, I'd take Cliff Lee's dead arm and money, too, if that's what we need to do, it's just money.

Are you saying you'd trade Russell for him AND take on Lee's contract?

Maybe an offseason trade for Castro would get it done.

If we're taking Lee's contract then they get Vogelbach. That's it.

I'm not necessarily saying I'd do both together, but am open to both suggestions.
