Wait, why does McCarthy keep coming up? Is it just assumed that Bosio can fix him?

Great peripherals.

2.89xFIP

K rate has jumped up almost a full 2.5k/9 this year.

I wouldn't get my heart set on him or anyone else that's underperformed their peripherals. My guess is those guys will be highly sought after at this point, to where they're not a bargain at all. Other teams surely will catch on after watching us flip these types back to them for 3 years now.

What is there to "catch on to?" Trying to get something from guys having down years or coming off of injuries/surgeries and the like is nothing new; even Hendry tried to do it, so it's not like the FO has stumbled across something new that everyone is slapping their foreheads for not figuring this out before.

There's also not a huge shortage of short term guys to gamble on. Whether it's old guys coming off good years, guys with past success and reason to bounce back, guys with big talents but injury problems, there's upwards of a dozen players in that arena.

I just went and looked, I thought Hammel's peripherals last season were much better than they were. You're right, I don't see anything other than our guys being good at picking the right guys here.

Side note-Hamels has a 20 team NTC that we're on.

Hamels is a [expletive] douche

Like he's a douche of the Matt Leinart order.

We're on his 20 team NTC. But it wouldn't shock me if it was us. Amaro may flip a coin with heads being "ask for Javy, KB, Soler, and Russell" and tails being "let them take his salary off our books".

amaro values his own players way too highly to just give them away in a salary dump. that's the reason that he didn't make any trades leading up to the deadline; he's thinking that he can get the moon for aging veterans.

Considering he asked for Aaron Judge for Marlon Byrd....

cole hamels' shoulder is hamburger meat

Evidence in performance, velocity or anything else this year?

@MikeMiss975: My info sez the CUBS put in the waiver claim on Cole Hamels. Would the Phils trade him there now and would Cole accept?

yeah i have no idea what that comment was about. he had some shoulder inflammation early in spring training, but his velocity and results are just as good as ever.

pretty sure he's just talking about the way sandberg has handled him

some comments on that tweet by mike missanelli (philly sports talk host; don't know how connected he is to rumors).

Miller ‏@MattyMillz85 3h

@MikeMiss975 cole prob wouldn't accept but imagine the excitement of kris Bryant and/ or Addison Russell coming to Philly

Sirk Semaj ‏@Falstaff_20 2h

@MikeMiss975 I'd trade him there if they want to give me Bryant and one of Soler or Alcantara. The Cubs won't do that though.

If it is us, I'm happy. Not that I expect anything to come of it, but it shows we're willing to add a 4/96 deal at this point that's not in their mid 20's.

meh, doesn't look that irresponsible to me. a 133 pitch start at one point, and then a string of starts going 125-125-115.

i'm not sure what to think about trading for hamels. on the one hand, he's already 30 and having a pitcher signed at $20m+ for more than 5 years is pretty terrifying. on the other hand, he's been about as reliable as any front line starter in the game for the past several years, so you would think/hope that maybe he's one of those guys who won't collapse or suffer major injuries before his mid 30s. although that's not really working out for matt cain, verlander, sabathia, cliff lee, roy halladay, etc.

i would probably hold off if for no other reason that jon lester is only marginally worse than hamels, and all lester will cost is money. hamels is good enough to bring back a top prospect, or three good/solid prospects.

At the very least, it's nice to see the front office isn't [expletive] around this off-season.

Anyway, I'd probably rather throw too much money at Lester/Scherzer than give up the prospects they'd want.
