All it takes to get Lester is money. Why would we give up a top tier prospect + $ to get Hamel?

If it doesn't take a top prospect, why not?

Torres and Jeff Baez?

Why would Philadelphia accept that?

The contract Hamels has left is less than he'd get on the open market so it's not necessarily a bad value.

His contract isn't even bad, coupled with the fact Philly is a major market team and money isn't an issue for them.

They don't HAVE to trade him and Amaro is known to be an idiot on top of everything. If you ran them, what benefit is there to just open up enough salary to go get one guy to replace him with? They need an injection of youth and even they know that. And they also have to know their system isn't good enough to produce it or has the ability to trade for it. He's their best shot at replenishing some of that and if anything, they'd likely try to get even MORE for him by offering to pay some of the contract, to get an even better haul. Quality over quantity.

You clearly haven't seen what's left on his contract.

of course I have, I've been using it as a positive for the cubs. A four year deal for a top pitcher would be awesome.

I've already said I'd trade Castro for him if they ate some money.

I can't see a fit.

Anything the Phillies would accept is too much when you can just go get Lester for the same contract plus a year or two.

Philadelphia needs to offer to eat most of the contract and ship him off to a small-market team with ambition but no cash.

Then why do you think the Cubs offering a big market team the chance to pick up Hamels' reasonable salary would somehow convince the Phillies to accept such an inferior package?

The Pirates would be an interesting partner, along those lines. The Mariners too.

Jim Salisbury of CSNPhilly.com reports that the Phillies "are looking for at least three top prospects" in trade talks for Cole Hamels.

Salisbury adds that, of the three, the Phils want "two that can play right now and another that isn’t far away." It's no surprise, of course, that their asking price is sky-high. Hamels is one of the elite starters in the game and the $96 million he's owed over the next four seasons is pretty reasonable for an ace. The Cubs and Red Sox have been connected to Hamels in the past and have both the prospects and payroll to make something work. CBS Sports' Jon Heyman reported last month that Hamels is updating his no-trade list this winter.

@Ken_Rosenthal Sources: #RedSox one of 20 teams on Hamels’ no-trade list. He would need to give #Phillies approval to trade him to Boston.

@Ken_Rosenthal Hamels would not necessarily reject #RedSox, but likely would require any team on no-trade list to pick up his $20 million option for 2019.

I know there's been uncertainty about whether Hamels put the Cubs on his list, but if he's planning on using the NTC to force his option to be picked up, my guess is the Cubs are on the list. 5/110 for Hamels in addition to even half of what the Phillies are reportedly asking for him is not my idea of a good time.

Look at what Shark fetched, that's a good start. I think it's too much considering the other options that are available to the Cubs.

Whenever I see "3 top prospects", I think 3 guys that are actual prospects with upside. Not necessarily the top 3 in a team's system, or 3 of top 10 or whatever. However, the comment about 2 being ML ready and 1 that isn't far away, makes me think the Phils are definitely trying to get the Cubs and Red Sox attention. Both teams have very good prospects that are going to be in their opening day lineups and talented players a few months to a year away.

It's unfortunate that I really like Cole Hamels, because I'm rather looking forward to this all blowing up in Amaro's face when Hamels has some arm discomfort in the future. Also, being forced to take that 5th year basically means you you either give up one more year for Lester or lots of prospects to save 23M, it's a really easy decision.

It says right there in the quote "the Phils want "two that can play right now and another that isn’t far away."

Yeah, and at one point the Cubs too were obsessed with getting guys who would play right now. That doesn't make them amazing.

I think this trade will get done. It makes too much sense.

It depends on the market and how it plays out. If the top 3 arms receive above what they are willing to spend, then it makes sense.

It should be used as a last resort unless the demand is less than expected.

I'm not strongly advocating it or anything but I have no idea how people can make statements like this.

Unthinking robots sure, but not people.

This is why it makes little sense. It's not a good match.

Given our current situation and our abundance of available payroll, it's a last resort, at best.

I think there's too many things pointing the wrong direction for Hamels to get dealt, and especially to the Cubs. The Phillies need prospects but could clearly pay Hamels if they want to so they don't have the urgency to deal him. But there's no indication that Amaro knows how to value Hamels + his contract(especially if the option is guaranteed), and considering his lack of experience being a seller I don't expect that to change. Maybe he figures out that he's gonna have to start offering to eat money to get the package he would want in return, or maybe come January there's some team that will get desperate, but I don't think there's good odds of either happening.
