Why don't we just offer to take Lee back too? Use some of that money we didn't use the past few years and speed up this process even more.

I'd rather just wait until 2016 and get David Price without giving up any prospects or taking any bad contracts/

I'd rather try to compete now by acquiring a better pitcher than Price.

I honestly don't think we can add another 23 mill to the payroll or anything remotely close to that. But there's certainly reasons he makes sense to go after now. I wonder if we could get them to take Jaxon and Wood back, if we sent Javy, Vogelbach, and one of Almora or Alcantara? I think a package of those 3 beats anything else that'd be offered and it'd only add 7 mill or so to our payroll for the upcoming season.....

Sidetracking, but I probably take Zimmerman or Cueto over Price. I don't know why I was thinking Cueto had a few inconsistent years recently, but I was definitely wrong. Holy crap has he been filthy dominant for 4 straight years.

Huh?

Are you talking about Hamels still? Because he's not better than Price.

Since Cole is back in the news... What is the MOST you would be OK with the Cubs giving up for Hamels?

Baez and some back of the top 10 (10-15?) types like PJ, Underwood, etc. and I'd do it kicking and screaming because I'm so infatuated with Javy's upside.

And I realize that probably doesn't get him, but no way in hell am I giving up Bryant, Russell, Soler, Schwarber, etc.

How many of the back of the top 10/15? 2, 3?

1 of those guys + Vogelbach (who i realize is one of those guys but is about the least useful to us of all those guys) + another of those guys if absolutely necessary

Oh, do you not like Baez?

My interest in Hamels is dependent on how fast the payroll is going to rise. If it's going to stay at this year's level for another year or more, I have no interest in him at any price. I'm also pretty bearish on Hamels compared to most. If the payroll is going to rise, I'd send Baez and maybe another player from the back of the top 10, but that's at the absolute most. In other words, I hold no illusions that Hamels is available at the price I'd be willing to pay.

Call me a homer but I'm still not giving up a cost controlled Javy for a 31 year old pitcher when there are so many (younger) alternatives available so soon for nothing more than money.

Turner, Vogelbach, and throw in Ednel

When it comes to hating Baez you're like an atheist Crossfitter.

That's an oxymoron. I never met a crossfitter that didn't believe in the one true lord, themselves.

I'm not against this strategy either, but Greinke is older than Hamels, Samardzija is just 1 year younger, Price is like 1.5 years younger, and Zimmerman is about 2.5. So all those guys next year will be at about the age Hamels is at now, when you can acquire them.

But that hurts 2015.

Cueto will only be 29 next offseason too. I'd rather just go after a rental at the deadline and not have to give up a guy who was just a consensus top 10 prospect and just turned 22.

But that hurts 2015.

I'm aware, but I'll accept that in order to keep Javy's massive potential for pennies. And it's not like we can't score a good rental at the deadline with our second tier guys.

I mean I'm not saying it's some asinine idea, I just think the alternatives are more desirable and not farfetched.

You also have to factor in that a pitcher of Hamels' quality will cost around $30-50 million more on the free agent market over the same time period, plus you'll have to give them significantly more money for several more years when they're in their mid-late thirties and suck. So if the Cubs think Baez is likely to bust, it's worth it to give him up in exchange for the massive cost savings+greater certainty+benefit to 2015. Although it seems like Amaro is aiming higher than Baez.

and to think, if we had no chance to compete soon, i'd probably love him and all the ridiculousness he provides (see: Lake, Junior)
