Sickels write up:

He also had Black as the No. 12 prospect in the Yankees system before the season:

Sounds like he has good potential. Wish the Yankees has picked up more of the bill but it seems like a fair return. Could be a future closer or solid setup man, it sounds like.

So, if I'm interpreting this correctly, the Yankees are paying $6.9M

Joel Sherman ‏@Joelsherman1 3m

#Yankees paying pro-rated $5M this year on Soriano and $5M of his $18M in 2014. #Cubs

I read it as $10 million total. Soriano has $5m total left this year when you pro-rate his total base salary from the beginning of the year to now and they are paying $5m next year.

But the pro-rated remaining amount this year would be like $7.3M this year, wouldn't it?

I guess I'm not really sure how they split out the pay checks and when they start paying them.

You're right, if he paid evenly over 162 that's how much he's still owed yet this year. I still read it as the Yankees paying $10 million total 5 this year and next year. Whether or not the 5 this year is what is completely left or some pro-ration of the 7.3, IDK.

I honestly think I would have rather had one of those ML ready relievers. That's where Black will likely end up anyway (though he should still get starters innings). Cheap late relief is still very important for an ML team to have and I think a surer bet to be a good reliever is better than a lottery ticket arm in this case.

At least we've augmented Happy Pierce Johnson Day in the minor league threads, with Happy Corey Black Day and Happy CJ Edwards Day. Tennessee might be fun to follow next year.

Also, "good" is a generous description of Soriano's season.

Yeah, I think people are generally letting his (surprisingly) good season last year bleed into how much production he's providing this year and how much he will bring next year at 38 years old. A non-contending team traded 1.2 years of a 37 year old 1 WAR player for a young prospect, $6 million freed up to allocate elsewhere in the offseason, and the opportunity to get a young playe some extended at bats for the rest of the season. I don't see how anyone could be "confused" by this trade. It's pretty simple.

Fair enough

Agreed. I was hoping for Whitley.

I'm guessing it means. ..5mil prorated of his original salary. 5mil of the original 18mil or whatever Soriano was due at the start of the season. ..but they are only paying what is left of that 5mil as of the trade date.

if we believe abty, he says the most money the cubs would send is 17.5m

thanks, david! i tried to read the psd message board the other day, and it's really terrible. i read here quite often, but i comment far less. this board is far more helpful and interesting. it's really tough to find good discussion too many other places.

also, a quick shout out to california raisin. i always appreciate your posts and comments.

Thank you!

I know I'm overthinking this, but if they actually got paid from the start of ST thru September, then the prorated amount would be around $5M at this point.

Any chance someone other than Sappelt replaces Sori on the ML roster?

Bogusevic will be eligible to come off the DL in a couple days. Not sure which one would be preferred at this point.

Sappelt wouldn't be eligible to come back up for 8 more days, though, right? Since there are already 5 outfielders on the roster and the bullpen has been a bit overworked lately I'm guessing they go with a pitcher.

Yeah, Sappelt won't be eligible because this was a trade, not an injury. And I agree, a reliever seems most likely.

Oh, I forgot about Borbon. It'll definitely be a reliever for now.

@ChrisCotillo: Source: #Cubs were deciding between one of Black/De La Rosa/Whitley and another unidentified prospect. Signs pointing to Black. #Yankees

I was really hoping that De Paula would somehow fall into our lap.

Chris Cotillo shouldn't be up this late.

Well I was, and here's my final post on the Soriano deal: http://www.mlbdailydish.com/2013/7/26/4559888/yankees-acquire-alfonso-soriano-from-cubs-corey-black

Thanks for the read!

You were right the first time. It's $5M next year and the prorated portion of $5M of the $18M he was due this year.

Maybe I'm an irrational fan, but I wish we would give Rosscup a callup rather than dipping back into the poisoned Coleman/Raley well.

I'd settle for bringing Rosscup to Iowa really. It's crazy that he hasn't been promoted yet this year.

Neither Coleman nor Rosscup are on the 40 man. I'm curious to see if Cabrera looks good for a few weeks in Iowa out of the pen if he gets a shot some time in August since he's already on it.

Given that we just traded Soriano for a guy who's not on the 40-man, I doubt that's an issue

It could be if they plan on bringing Scott Baker or Ryan Sweeney back at any time.

Good point. I forgot Sweeney was on the 60-day DL.
