If we got Black and 6+ million I'd be pretty pleased with that result.

Agreed.

Either way, I did at one point disliked Soriano a lot back then, but I have grown to tolerate him because of what he brought to the team, his work ethic, that he was a good all around person.

He isn't perfect by any means, but I am also aware that he isn't the worst.

Good luck in NY Soriano, and thanks for everything you gave to the Cubs.

This basically mirrors my feelings. Before, when thinking about trading him, I conjured up images of him haplessly flailing away at breaking balls low and away. I suppose that still applies, but I appreciated him even more than I realized. He was, by all accounts I have ever read, a stand up person and teammate. Maybe it doesn't add up to wins, but it's a redeemable quality, regardless.

I'll be happy if the cubs saved money and got an intriguing prospect. Hell, I'd take either because his production next year will likely be replaced easily (or surpassed). But I remember the night he signed. And while I wasn't happy about the dollars, he was a sign the cubs were "serious" about winning now. I know the day will come again, but it's been a long road. Best of luck, Sori.

According to ABTY, the hold up on this deal is the Cubs' concern over Lou Gehrig's medicals.

I don't know why, but I actually laughed at this.

yep.

@ChrisCotillo: Source: #Cubs were deciding between one of Black/De La Rosa/Whitley and another unidentified prospect. Signs pointing to Black. #Yankees

I was really hoping that De Paula would somehow fall into our lap.

Chris Cotillo shouldn't be up this late.

Black seems like a reasonable return. Don't know much about him, but judging by his smallish size and spotty control, I'm thinking his long term future could be as a bullpen arm.

I'd take Whitley. If the Yankees didn't have a bullpen already stacked he would be pitching in the MLB. . He's breezed through the minor league system despite the fact that he didn't start pitching until his junior year of college. His changeup is supposed to be filthy.

if we believe abty, he says the most money the cubs would send is 17.5m

He's always seemed like he'd be a fun guy to hang around with. But the way they're talking it's like he's dying. Must have been a clubhouse leader far more than I realized.

You can say what you want about Soriano's contract vs. his production, but he has generally been a good guy in the clubhouse. Everyone praises his attitude and professionalism.

Sori said bye to his teammates tonight. I didn't think I could love Sori anymore than I already do, but after he said this, I love the guy more.

farewell, number 12. True, smart Cubs fans know what you meant. Thanks for helping us win back to back division titles on 07 and 08.

What will he remember most about being a Cub?

“The fans,” he said. “They always want to win, they love to win. More important, being with the Cubs, they appreciate when the team wins and the team plays good.”

The fans could be harsh when Soriano made a bad play in the field.

“I respect the fans, I always play hard for the fans,” he said. “They love the team and they like to see the team do well. I always tried to do the best when I play for the Cubs and tried to be a champion here. It didn’t happen, so I hope it happens in the future. Now, I have to think about my new team.”

Yeah...here's the full thing:

Right now the deal is listed as Alfonso Soriano, upto 17.5M for a PTBNL... The 'upto' part comes from potential (likely unreachable) bonuses in Soriano's contract (MVP, AS start, etc)...

Heard Black as well however also heard Campos and about four other very similar pitchers as well...

Then that InsideCubGuy:

I'm hearing basically the same from my source...however, I heard 20M from the Cubs if they want Black...less if they take Whitley...nothing set in stone, but that is what I've been told. Good work, ABTY.

Then ABTY:

O's made offer on Soriano two days ago- same level of prospect however they offered to eat more of Sori's deal- FO went back to Cashman, who relented... Original Yankees deal had 95% of contract being paid for by Cubs; agreed upon deal closer to 70-75%

thanks, david! i tried to read the psd message board the other day, and it's really terrible. i read here quite often, but i comment far less. this board is far more helpful and interesting. it's really tough to find good discussion too many other places.

also, a quick shout out to california raisin. i always appreciate your posts and comments.

I'll wait to see exactly what we get and what we pay but it doesn't seem to make sense. It sounds like we are paying most of the deal(over half), and getting a pretty low level prospect. I don't see why getting rid of Soriano was such a priority to basically pay him to play for someone else and get someone who may never get out of A ball.

We also lost another right handed bat. If you thought our line up vs lefties was shaky before...

Buster Olney ‏@Buster_ESPN 5m

Soriano is owed about $24.5m through '14. CHC are going to pick up about $17.7m. NYY will pick up about $6.8m of that, including $5m in '14.

@CSNMooney Barney will miss Sori's post-HR calls in dugout: "Tell Navarro to call Messi and tell him this game is too easy. I need to play soccer."

We got $6M of salary relief and a prospect that is somewhat interesting and Soriano's current production wouldn't be that difficult to replace in LF.

Yeah, the only way this can be classified as a bad deal is if you're convinced that a better one is out there, because the Cubs are pretty clearly better off than before they made the trade.
