In dire need of a bat with thump and an indication the Yankees may believe that Alex Rodriguez isn’t going to play this season, the toothless Bombers are close to acquiring Alfonso Soriano from the Cubs, The Post has learned.

According to a person familiar with the talks, the Cubs will pay the bulk of what is left on Soriano’s contract. He makes $18 million this year and the same for next season.

Like they did in the Vernon Wells deal, whatever the Yankees pay will be laid out for the little more than the $6 million remaining Soriano’s contract this season. That way the Yankees aren’t on the hook for money next year when they want to get the payroll to $189 million. Soriano has a no-trade clause, but he would not block a deal to put him back in Pinstripes.

In return the Cubs will get a mid-level prospect.

Figured I might as well...

The New York Post sucks, doesn't it? And if we pay most of his deal, I'm hoping for more than a "midlevel" prospect, but I guess that term means different things to different folks.

I would hope Soriano + $24MM-ish dollars would net more than a "mid-level prospect" from a $200MM franchise in the midst of getting pantsed by the Sox, Rays and O's.

If I was Soriano I'd probably veto a trade to the Yankees

I just have no idea how to feel about trading Soriano or what they should get in return. He's got some value, as evidenced by his 3 win season last year, but he's also a LF/DH who's been no stranger to below average seasons as well. The Cubs don't have an urgent need to trade him(especially if they aren't freeing up a ton of money), but at the same time I'm reasonably confident that the front office could duplicate his expected production next year with the ~5 million saved by trading him.

What about someone like Romine, given that the FO was confident about his health? His star has dimmed quite a bit, but he's still got pretty good pedigree, catchers are late bloomers, and he seems a certain enough defender that the worst case scenario is he lingers as Castillo's backup after he's out of options.

I legit wonder if the Yanks are good enough to where Sori would even waive his NTC honestly.

Soriano loves it in New York. I remember he was so excited when he went back there for the All Star Game. I think that's one of the few places he would accept.

I would agree there is no urgent need to trade him, but with DeJesus, Sweeney and Bogusevic coming off the DL eventually and Sveum being in love with Lake, it could be justified.

Sources confirm Cubs are exploring multiple deals that would move Alfonso Soriano out of town. NY Post says Yanks close to landing Soriano

We only have two catchers on the 40 man currently, with Navarro being a trade candidate. I'd definitely prefer JR Murphy to Romine, with Sanchez around, I guess thats feasible. I'd take Angelo Gumbs and be happy. I'd love to grab Banuelos or Campos, but I can't see Cashman doing that in a year his team isn't likely to make the playoffs.

When I see "mid level prospect", I have to wonder if it's really such a good thing to be making deals such as these. While it may be better than not getting anything for him, we're probably going to see major roster crunches in the coming seasons. There's going to be tough decisions to make for protecting prospects and adding guys that are going to end up being exposed to the rule 5 draft just isn't an efficient strategy.

I would much prefer to "upgrade" our prospects. If Hoyer can't pry the prospect they want from the Yankees, why sweeten the deal with an Alberto Cabrera or a Jae Hoon Ha? I hardly think I'm being innovative with this idea, just a thought.

A number of these prospects are almost certainly going to end up being sold off as part of packages to bring in established MLB talent at some point, perhaps as early as in the coming offseason. I'd rather save the extra pieces that might be used in a scenario like the one you describe and use them as throw in sweeteners in deals for guys like David Price.

This is probably not a real factor in this trade decision, but with the remote possibility that Cano hits the market I don't like to see the Cubs help the Yankees save any money.

It's a good time considering Soriano actually has some value right now to a team he'd accept a trade to. He might not in the offseason or next year at this time.

Unless the Cubs pay in excess of Soriano's salary, how are they helping at all in that regard?

(EDIT - Oh yeah, the luxury tax I guess)

Even then, it's not worth not doing something that helps us based on the absurdly remote possibility of signing Cano.
