Totally not going to happen, but its interesting to note that the Cubs can still add $1,315,500 in IFA slot allotments and the Yankees have $1,163,900 available to trade away.

http://www.chicagonow.com/cubs-den/2013/07/soriano-contemplating-potential-deal/

UPDATE 3:01: We're hearing this has a better than average chance of going down by tonight. One estimate we heard was 75% that Soriano doesn't play in the game.

Julie DiCaro of ChicagoNow and Aerysports.com is also hearing a trade is close. DiCaro says,

I was told this morning by a reliable source that the Cubs are waiting for the word to take down Alfonso Soriano’s photo (which is apparently bolted to the wall) in the press room at Wrigley.

There have been some varying reports on the possibility of the Cubs sending Alfonso Soriano to the New York Yankees.

What I have heard this morning is that he is indeed contemplating a deal, and at the time it stood at 50/50. The information was presented in a way that suggested there is a deal to contemplate. There could be some negotiation still left between the clubs, (money) however it was close enough apparently for them to seek Soriano’s approval.

That bit about taking down his photo is a bit weird.

let's keep this all very hush hush..., but make sure you alert the maintenance crew to be on standby to remove a plaque that is in a press room where no press will be located since the team is in Arizona.

I forgot his name but the Yankees are linked to a big time Latin IFA who won't turn 16 till August. That money is already spoken for.

#Cubs DeJesus will lead off and play center, Lake in LF, Schierholtz in RF. Day off for Soriano, so don't start any rumors.

If Muskat says it, it must be true as she always has her fingers on the pulse of the Cubs. Who were the two players she comically confused in ST? Wasn't it two guys who weren't even the same ethnicity/color? Like Vitters and Lake?

Does that really matter anymore? The Cubs are going to get the penalty next year, so it'd literally be trading for money.

Not saying they would trade all of it, but even if they did, they'd still be able to spend $735,000 on a player without incurring a penalty per AZPhil.

I read a report that if they didn't sign Tseng, the Cubs needed a little under $500,000 to avoid the big penalty. Looking for it now...

Soriano's line against Ian Kennedy: .462/.556/1.231. In 16 PAs, 6 H, 1 2B, 3 HR, 3 BB, 3 K. Great time for a day off...

From Obstructed View...

Jesse Sanchez is sticking by his report that Erling Moreno actually signed for $650k, rather than the previously reported $800k. This means that the Cubs currently have $2.33 million remaining in pool space. Given that the agreement with Eloy is for $2.81 million, the Cubs need to acquire around $461k in slots to stay within the constraints of the 5% overage.

everybody on twitter says soriano gave the cubs a list of the teams he'll accept a trade to, and the yankees are on the list.

I hope we get more than that Whitley guy for him. If its just to save money, I still don't see the point, unless its going towards more IFA's.

Worse -- it was Brett Jackson and Clayton Kershaw.

Why only IFAs?

Why only IFAs?

I'm basing it year by year, I guess. Low payroll this year, subtracting money now, including a possibility the Yanks pay rest of Sori's money THIS year, but not much next year. With rumors our payroll could stagnate again next year, I'd like to see ALL of this year's already low payroll get spent, since the opportunity IS there to do it, with IFA's. Especially since this is probably our only shot with the "all in" approach. Don't get me wrong, as long as it gets spent somehow though, I'm fine with it.

After reports that the Yankees were talking to the Cubs about Soriano, President Theo Epstein spoke with the veteran outfielder after Tuesday’s game at Chase Field, outlining his options and giving him a blunt analysis of the team’s desire to move on.

“He asked for a couple days to think about it,” Epstein said. “He said he’ll get back to us in a couple days and let us know where he’ll go, if anywhere, and then at that point it’s up to us if we want to move forward and finalize a deal.”

If Soriano is traded, that would leave Shark as the only current Cub to play in a playoff game with the team, and him and Gregg would be the only Cubs to play for a +500 Cubs team.
