The Cubs’ trade of Alfonso Soriano to the Yankees is expected to be announced soon, with 21-year-old right-hander Corey Black likely to be the piece coming back to the Cubs.

Multiple reports have said the Cubs were given a choice of second-tier pitching prospects to choose from, and the belief is they’ll take Black, a high-A starter with a big arm, over Double-A closer Tony Kahnle.

If someone would have told me a few years ago that I would be a little sad when Soriano left the Cubs, I would have thought that person was crazy.

There was a time when I wanted nothing more than for Soriano to be off the Cubs' roster, but he has completely changed my opinion of him over the past few seasons. He is certainly a flawed player, but I appreciate the fact that he wants to be in the lineup every single day and the work that he has seemingly put in to address the flaws in his game (like his defense).

Well said.

I'll wait to see exactly what we get and what we pay but it doesn't seem to make sense. It sounds like we are paying most of the deal(over half), and getting a pretty low level prospect. I don't see why getting rid of Soriano was such a priority to basically pay him to play for someone else and get someone who may never get out of A ball.

We also lost another right handed bat. If you thought our line up vs lefties was shaky before...

We got $6M of salary relief and a prospect that is somewhat interesting and Soriano's current production wouldn't be that difficult to replace in LF.

Yeah, the deal is sounding much better than it initially did.

Considering how much money the Cubs included in the deal, and the benefit received to the Yankees by structuring it so they stay under the luxury tax, I'm disappointed by this return. The Cubs received a low level prospect for Soriano (who is having a good year and will contribute to the Yankees), $18M, plus saving additional money by staying under the luxury tax. Yes, the $24M was a sunk cost from the Cubs perspective, but the Yankees received a significant benefit through this deal.

You're annoyed that the FO didn't somehow force a deal to put the Yankees over the luxury tax?

No, I disappointed that they didn't get a better prospect in the deal. I don't know what the other options were though, or if there were any other options.

Honestly, the Yankees benefit is not really my concern. Were the Cubs going to get more from somewhere else? If not, we did well. Like you said, Soriano was a sunk cost and really had little benefit in the long run for the Cubs. Theo/Jed had to have two goals. Maximize the return (which they theoretically did) and clear room for young outfield talent, which is also accomplished. Not really much to be disappointed about, imo.

Also, "good" is a generous description of Soriano's season.

Anyone know when the Cubs play the AL East again? Looks like they played the Central last year and have been playing the West this year. So, hopefully Soriano and the Yanks will have a Wrigley homecoming next year. As frustrating as he could be at times, he was a great teammate, worked his ass off and always took the high road on top of having some great moments. I would give him a standing ovation.

For all we know, there may not have been any other options. Soriano could choose where he wanted to go.

Yeah, I think people are generally letting his (surprisingly) good season last year bleed into how much production he's providing this year and how much he will bring next year at 38 years old. A non-contending team traded 1.2 years of a 37 year old 1 WAR player for a young prospect, $6 million freed up to allocate elsewhere in the offseason, and the opportunity to get a young playe some extended at bats for the rest of the season. I don't see how anyone could be "confused" by this trade. It's pretty simple.

The Yankees came to Wrigley last time the teams played, so if they follow that the Cubs will go to Yankee Stadium next year.

Most people will just see A-ball prospect for Soriano, plus the Cubs pick up most of the tab. They aren't going to look at the rest of that.

Not really a Sickels fan, but am a little surprised he had Black as a B- guy heading into the season. Saving 5 mill off next seasons payroll is pretty solid.

So, if I'm interpreting this correctly, the Yankees are paying $6.9M

Joel Sherman ‏@Joelsherman1 3m

#Yankees paying pro-rated $5M this year on Soriano and $5M of his $18M in 2014. #Cubs

Just a couple of tweets prior, he'd said the Yankees would be paying 8-12M. Weird.

I read it as $10 million total. Soriano has $5m total left this year when you pro-rate his total base salary from the beginning of the year to now and they are paying $5m next year.

cubs get corey black

so can somebody smart tell me why black was ranked higher in the yankees system if he throws 95 consistently with a good curve? speculation that his small body won't hold up? evn if you project him as a reliever it seems like he should have been higher.

But the pro-rated remaining amount this year would be like $7.3M this year, wouldn't it?

I guess I'm not really sure how they split out the pay checks and when they start paying them.

Here's a quick wrote up on Black on a Yankees blog similar to BN

29) Corey Black – RHP, 21 – HiA – 2016

A 4th round pick this year, Black can bring the heat. Though just 5’11, 180 pounds he can throw the ball from 96-99 MPH with some movement. He made 12 starts across 3 levels, limiting hitters to a .222 BA and struck out 50 in 52 ip. His breaking pitches lack consistency but he has a nice Changeup which is his #2 pitch. He could rocket up the system with his FB/Change combo as a reliever but the Yanks will likely try to develop him as a starter since they are flush with RH relievers.

Borrell: “We had him at 96-99 in Charleston, although reports were he got up to 100 mph, I didn’t see it he has a special arm and for our scouts to get a guy like him in that round (4th) is impressive.”
