Adaptable to a totally different style of offense that the Bears will never play. With that said, I would have died for the 23rd rated offense this year in yards.

How in the world can you possibly say what style of offense the Bears will play in the future?

Especially if Jay isn't here after next season.

There's been a lot of talk radio wishful thinking that the new coach will try to get a new QB in here, but I seriously doubt that happens.

I would be shocked if the new coach didn't get a new QB in the draft within the next 2 seasons. They won't get anybody worth getting from outside the organization, but they will be drafting one shortly.

Insane to complain about a coach who can adapt to the pieces he is given. Especially given the fact that we will still probably have a bad offensive line next year and the fact that the Bears are 1-6 without Cutler the last 2 seasons.

Ugh.

I'm not a person that thinks it is Cutler or bust. I do think you always have to be on the lookout for the next guy in line, but that doesn't necessarily mean you force your current guy out. Especially when that guy is a major asset like Cutler.

I would be a proponent of drafting a Kirk Cousins type QB to try and groom as a possible replacement only because Cutler's contract is coming up and he obviously has a history with concussions. It's never a bad idea to stockpile talent, especially at the most important position. If the new coach were to come in and immediately start looking for an immediate replacement for Cutler though, that would be incredibly depressing.

Yeah, but they'll re-sign Jay is my point. People hoping that the new coach will come in and send Jay away are going to be disappointed.

I'm honestly more worried about Jay retiring than not signing with the Bears. If he takes 1 or 2 more concussions in the upcoming season, I would think he starts thinking about it at least. That's why I think there has to be a huge emphesis on getting the O-line straigtened out. It needs to be number 1, 2, and 3 on the off season to do list. I realize there are other needs with the aging defense and TE situation, but without a healthy Cutler, this team will go nowhere fast.

I expect the Bears to bring in a cheap veteran backup and then draft a guy this year. Probably not until very late in the draft, but teams have shown they can get by a couple games at a time while developing a QB.

That's where Clements would be a good hire. He's got a good track record with QB development.

Matt Scott on day 3 would work for me.

Isn't the OL repairable? Given one or two solid additions? Assuming so, and with an offensive HC, it's not all that far reaching the Bears offense could dramatically improve.

One or two? Its' going to take at least 4 for the longterm. In the short-term you'd need 2 at the minimum and probably three to actually make it a good line.

Yeah, they'd probably need at least an LT and center to make it somewhat legitimate for an NFL O-line, and it would still be below average. Seems like Emery is a big fan of Scott, so RT may be set.

FWIW, Dan Bernstein has been saying for a couple days that his sources tell him that Carimi was injured most of the season, a lot more than was being told, and that he was essentially playing on one leg, and that the Bears think that a healthy Carimi with a full training camp will be a lot better next season, and not to count him out.

I would imagine they'd be in pretty decent shape if they can sign Jake Long, draft a guy to play LG and then manage to stay relatively healthy next year. At that point, you've stopped the massive hemorrhaging and can then continue building it for the future. A lot of ifs, but certainly doable.

A weak RT who has been injured for his first two seasons should not be counted on at all.

Assuming the best, a healthy Carimi is effective along with adding 2 decent OL via the draft there's 3.

Yeah, I don't think you can really plan on counting on a guy who's consistently been hurt, especially if it's a knee again.

The Bears don't have the ability to replace the whole OL in one offseason. Their best bet is to acquire a good LT, allow Webb/Carimi/Scott to compete for the RT job and hope for an adequate starter out of that trio, re-sign Louis and hope he returns to form and acquire at least one more good interior lineman in the draft.

I like the Qb from Duke, Renfree.

My realistic hope is a legit LT. Draft a LG first 2 rounds to start right away. Re-sign Louis. Let Webb/Carimi battle for RT. Louis/Carimi for RG. And I guess keep Garza one last year.

Jay Cutler has “horrendous” fundamentals and the new Bears coach will have to “tell him you gotta conform to what I want,” former NFL quarterback Boomer Esiason said Friday on WSCR-AM 670.

“Cutler has the tools, but he hasn’t put it all together yet,” Esiason said on "The McNeil and Spiegel Show." "Jay Cutler just wants to feed Brandon Marshall the whole time and he kinda disengages everybody else.

“Whoever they bring in there is going to have to sit down with Jay Cutler and tell him this is the way it’s gotta be and you gotta conform to what I want.

And the only other thing that bothers me a little bit about Jay … I think his pocket fundamentals are horrendous. Fundamentally, he carries the ball low. He's very lackadaisical in the pocket. He’s like an old school gunslinger – like a Daryle Lamonica type, where in today’s NFL to get away with that is almost impossible.”

http://www.chicagotribune.com/sports/football/bears/chi-chicago-bears-jay-cutler-horrendous-esiason-20130104,0,1841301.story

I couldn't disagree more about being "lackadaisical in the pocket". But it's Cutler bashing season I guess.

But I can tell you right now that the first thing they need to fix is they have to fix that position from a fundamental standpoint and then they have to fix that position to make sure that truly he is what Brian Urlacher says he is – and that’s the leader of this football team.

“If Brian Urlacher were ever around Peyton Manning and he compared the two, it would be like soap and water.”

CUTLER SUCKS CUZ HE ISN'T PEYTON MANNING

You don't think the first drive fumble vs the Vikings was lackadaisical?

Cutler spends the entire game dodging freight trains in the pocket. If he truly was lackadaisical, he'd be dead and the most fumble prone QB in the game by a wide margin. He is neither.
