January 13 - Assistant coaches under contract with playoff teams that won Wild Card games may be interviewed for head coaching positions through the conclusion of Divisional Playoff games.

So, worst case scenario is to interview him, we may have to wait out Green Bay's playoff run, right? If that IS the case, would we be willing to do that?

i hope so. i don't see the urgency, really.

Emery acknowledged they may have to wait to interview some because of the playoffs, but he said in an ideal world, he'd like to have a coach for the "all star games".

The East-West game is on the 19th.

The Senior bowl is the 26th.

More info on the rules about interviewing assistants in the playoffs...

First off, any assistant on a team that isn't participating in the postseason cannot be blocked from interviewing for a head-coaching vacancy. When and where that assistant interviews, though, can somewhat be influenced by the team that they are under contract to.

But there are rules for when assistants from the 12 clubs in the playoffs can speak to other teams interested in potentially hiring them as a head coach.

Here's a closer look:

January 6 -- Assistant coaches under contract to playoff clubs that have byes in the Wild Card weekend may be interviewed for head coaching positions through the conclusion of the Wild Card games (Jan. 5-6).

January 13 -- Assistant coaches under contract to playoff clubs that won their Wild Card games may be interviewed for head coaching positions through the conclusion of Divisional Playoff games (Jan. 12-13).

January 27 -- An assistant coach, whose team is participating in the Super Bowl (Feb. 3), who has previously interviewed for another club's head coaching job may have a second interview with such club no later than the Sunday preceding the Super Bowl.

So, we should be able to interview Clements on the 12-13th even if they win their game against the Vikes if I'm reading that correctly?

Holy crap does it annoy the hell out of me when people do this after minor moves.

Colleague Dave Zangaro at CSNHouston.com is busy with a playoff team this week but shot me a note regarding an intriguing name in the coaching spectrum:

Texans offensive coordinator Rick Dennison.

Dennison can’t be talked to about jobs until either the Texans are eliminated from the playoffs or during the off-week before the Super Bowl. And he rightly brushed off head-coach questions this week.

But here’s the intriguing deal with Dennison: He may have arguably the best resume of any candidate under consideration.

He was Jay Cutler’s offensive coordinator in Denver when Cutler was having his one Pro Bowl season. That was under Mike Shanahan and with Jeremy Bates as quarterbacks/receivers coach, so Cutler was raised by committee.

More to the overall, Dennison was a linebacker with the Broncos for eight seasons. Then he was the Broncos’ special-teams coach, offensive line coach and coordinator before joining former teammate Gary Kubiak’s staff in Houston.

Would be one of the hotter candidates on the board if Houston weren't sputtering to the finish line.

Dennison is interesting. The Texans offense is pretty solid. They developed a very good OL without a ton of top picks there. They have a good all around RB and they really get the most out of the TE position.

I'm hearing minor rumblings about Bill O'Brien possibly leaving PSU to go to the Bears, but that's very minor.

Yeah, I've heard it's a longshot. I'd guess he'd be interesting. Much rather have the OCs from GB, Denver, or Houston. But he's the only guy with any head coaching experience of those 4, though it's only 1 year. And you have to admire what he was able to do with Penn St's team. He does fit the requirement of being from an elite offensive background with his experience as OC/QB coach in New England.

No talk of Gruden at all is a bit surprising to me. If we end up with Clements, McCoy, or Dennison, I'll be happy.

Not sure where I saw it (somewhere here I think) or how true it was, but I saw that he was saying he wasn't interested in any coaching jobs and will stay with ESPN.

i'd really love to see marinelli stick with us as DC.

Its really an ideal situation. Unlike trying to bring in an up and coming offensive mind as OC who would just be poached after a year or so, no one will ever hire Marinelli as head coach again. So get your head coach be a primarily offensive mind.

Interviewing Pete Carmichael tomorrow.

Forgot about him. Hadn't really heard his name much this offseason. Did some last year. People wondered how much was him and how much was Sean Payton, but Payton wasn't around this year and they were still a pretty good offense. And Doug Marrone (the OC before him) has gone on to develop a pretty good QB at Syracuse in Ryan Nassib.

FWIW, Saints fans weren't all too happy with Carmichael this season. Main reasons cited have been he's TOO pass heavy 65-35 pass/run ratio. Not using Sproles enough. Too many sacks allowed because of predictable play calling.
