i want jim hendrys head for this monumentally horrible trade, how can you give up your best pitching and best infielder prospects... Lee sure but ARCHER?!?!? are you kidding me jim

This trade kinda sucks. Who is the minor league pitcher?

Heyman mentioned that it was yet to be determined. No idea if he means a PTBNL or if he means we're still deciding between a couple of guys that will be determined today.

I feel like our chances next year are being underplayed.

To me, Z, Garza, Demp, Wells, Cashner/Gorz seems like a really, really solid starting rotation. There may not be a dominant guy, but there are a bunch of solid guys and 2-3 of those guys are capable of being really good any given season.

We all know bullpens are a crapshoot, but Marmol is about as close to a sure thing as you get (in terms of being able to count on very good performance out of a reliever).

If we can be decent offensively, I don't see why this can't be a pretty good team, but maybe my "analysis" is flawed.

I hope its Cashner with Gorzelanny in long-relief.

I think you're right. We'll have a very deep rotation, should have a very strong back end of the bullpen, and the offense is hard to tell because there's been so much variance with guys like Ramirez, Soriano, and Pena, and guys like Castro and Colvin don't have much MLB history. I think this team is built in the vein of the 2008 team. Not that it's going to win 90+, but it's built to minimize weakness, and if you aren't going to have a Pujols or a Lincecum on your team, that's not a bad way to go.

That's a gigantic "if."

Just wondering... but how did the offense do in the post Piniella hot stretch?

I'm asking honestly... I didn't really watch and I'm too lazy/busy (lol) to look it up.

I'm not as high on Archer as you, nor Lee as others. Archer doesn't have the command/control of the FB as well as deception to translate at the ML level of a #1 starter. Lee likely ends up hitting 7/8 and Guyer and Chirinos are reserves one being marginal and one being fringe.

I agree and to add on to what some have said, I would rather have Garza than Greinke with his contract and the constant fear that he might just mentally break down at some point.

We already had a pretty solid rotation. I wonder if this pushes out Wells, Gorz, or Silva? Either way, it only represents probably a 1-2 win upgrade at best.

It's a bad trade unless Hendry thinks Garza is poised for a breakout... Simply moving from the AL East isn't enough, not when he's already outperforming his xFIP

Don't look it up. You'll be really let down.

Most of the winning they pulled off last year was due to the pitching. The offense was really, really wretched for most of the season.

Fernando Perez is going to the Cubs, according to Miles. The 27-year-old outfielder has a .234/.301/.351 line in 107 big league plate appearances. He hit .223/.280/.299 in 426 plate appearances at Triple-A last year.

Im not that impressed here by Perez. Losing Archer sucks, but you had to give you somebody if you wanted Garza. Im also not high on Guyer or Lee for that matter. Fuld can go suck an egg and Chirinos is a throw in. I like Garza a lot and think our rotation should be solid, especially if Cashner gets a shot.

Please Hendry, pick a good pitcher to bring back and make me feel even better about this trade!

I seem to recall early prospect reports on Fernando Perez as a poor man's Juan Pierre. Looking at his minor league stats, that might be a generous scouting report. Ugh.

And he'll be 28 on April 23rd. The term prospect should be applied loosely.

11:54am: The deal is not completely done yet, but it's heading in that direction, according to Jon Paul Morosi of FOX Sports (on Twitter).

In the vein of the 08 team is exactly what I was thinking. Solid up and down... a hole or two we have to fix to get to that level, though. Would love an upgrade at 2B, but that's not being talked about at all... and I hate that Colvin is in the everyday lineup.

isnt junior lake pretty much as highly regarded as Lee? isnt it a moot point if castro stays at SS?

There's a good debate on Lee v. Lake in the Minor League forum. Personally, I think most would agree Lee has more trade value, and I think that's for good reason.

Lee is a good enough defender that he could've pushed Castro to 2B if he panned out. Plus, he always could've been traded for somebody else, we could trade Castro if he had panned out, etc.
