Overplaying in a trade once in awhile isn't a bad thing. Remember this is only a 30 team market here, and the Rays have a very good farm system. Building up good will with them might be important down the road.

Bruce Miles is saying that the OF we're getting back is Fernando Perez. 27 years old(28 in April), switch hitter. Seems like a different Fuld from the numbers.

I'm pretty sure he made Tampa's top 30 list last year. He's probably our 4th OFer, with our current roster.

Here's another good facebook Fuld comment.

Fuld is a Soriano decision going from bad to worse -- Hendry not giving a minor leaguer a chance because he has to WIN NOW. You watch - Sam Fuld is going to be a productive player for the Rays.

And......

why cant Sam Fuld bat .275 and a spark at the top or bottom of your lineup. Craig Council is 40 and still doing that. A guy like Fuld will never cost you a lot and will always make solid contributions with work ethic, attitude and doing the little things well to win a game.

Man, now I REALLY wish it was Colvin. You'd have Cubs fans breaking into Wrigley so they could protest by leaping to their deaths onto the field.

I bet this guy went on Zoloft when we traded Ryan Theriot.

LOL I'd much rather have a player that does the big things well.

Perez has had some major injuries in his career. I am trying to find out how many options he has left. At best he would be the 5th OF behind Soriano/Byrd/Fukudome/Colvin.

Good trade or bad, if Hendry was willing to give up this type of package about a month ago, we could have had Greinke.

I'd rather have Garza, contracts considered.

A .579 OPS in 385 ABs for AAA Durham last year.

It's just time for Hendry to leave.

They're different styles of pitchers, diff stages of career, different ceilings. Comparing a finesse pitcher with a power pitcher in any comparison becomes void given the stage of Garza's career . I love this trade for the Cubs.

Here are some of the numbers he used:

Garza: 3.05 BB/9, 7.1 K/9, 1.09 HR/9, 38.9% GB%, 4.39 xFIP

Harang: 2.57 BB/9, 7.4 K/9, 1.47 HR/9, 35.1% GB%, 4.21 xFIP

He adjusted them for league, as well. Garza may have a high ceiling, but if you put any stock into xFIP, he's been pretty underwhelming in three full seasons in the majors. I know he might get a positive boost for switching leagues, but he'll likely get a negative bump for having a much worse defense behind him.

Unless Hendry and his scouts are convinced he'll continue to outpitch his xFIP by a decent amount, there was no reason to give up Archer. Even if he does, I don't think you give up Archer.

I'm not as high on Archer as you, nor Lee as others. Archer doesn't have the command/control of the FB as well as deception to translate at the ML level of a #1 starter. Lee likely ends up hitting 7/8 and Guyer and Chirinos are reserves one being marginal and one being fringe.

I flipping hate this trade. Hate hate hate.

Hendry doesn't care if he bankrupts the farm because he's trying to save his ass. Archer and Guyer are going to be good - Archer at least a 3rd starter and Guyer an everyday OF'er. And I read all the time about how Lee is a wiz defensively, and you can always find a GM who will pay big to get a light hitting , defensive stud MIF'er.

Garza doesn't enough upside for the amount of value we gave up - that haul should netted Greinke or someone similar.

Fernando Perez tidbits:

He's a published poet: http://www.poetryfoundation.org/foundation/release_090309.html?id=186178

He's also a bit of comedian. Check out this Baseball's Working Poor sketch:

Some of us had to find a way to survive on only $400,000 a year.

Great dude but he'll be behind Fukudome, Byrd and Colvin on the OF depth chart.

I remember seeing that on Youtube when it came out. Maybe he can jump over a car as well.

Oh [expletive], it's that guy?!?!? He sucks, but this deal is suddenly awesome.

I'm not that thrilled about the trade but also don't feel like making a hard line "like it/hate it" pronouncement. This is really one that can't be judged at the moment.

On one hand, I was a big Archer fan and was somewhat confident that he'd work out as a middle of the rotation guy leaning towards the top half. I've never been the biggest Lee fan myself and who cares about Chirinos. One other problem for me is that I actually quite liked Guyer and I really don't think Colvin is going to finish this year as a worthwhile player and it have been nice to have a little depth there in the outfield.

On the other, we kept the Jacksons and McNutt and I think Garza's numbers will improve in the NL central. Also, he's rocking at least a half-Clement. Awesome.

I disagree. I think that there will be a significant improvement from last year's club to this year's. It may not be a huge improvement, but it will be enough that I consider them watchable again. Call me a fair weather fan if you want, but gone are the days where I just automatically give the Cubs my time and money blindly because I'm a fan. At 31, I just can't afford to invest myself emotionally to every game of every season in the longest season in sports anymore. If they're bad, I'll find some other, more valuable way to use my time like read a book, spend time with family or do laundry.

Should have said 5th OFer, keep forgetting we still have Fukudome.

I remember reading in another thread that BA ranked our farm system the 8th best in baseball. I wonder where we are now. I wonder if we could have gotten away with this trade with Carpenter or Jay Jackson instead of Archer.

No way. Maybe with McNutt. Maybe.

I doubt Hendry immediately asked them if they'd take our top pitching prospect. But he was probably eating donuts and fat and stuff.

These quotes must be what the rest of the world feels like when Americans talk about soccer.

There's a pretty big area in between watching every game and not watching any games.
