Ryan Howard must be a platoon player too

He really should be, but since hes a "star" they wont sit him vs all leftys. At least Howard is over a 575 OPS in the last 3 years vs leftys. Granderson can't even say that....thats how bad he is vs leftys

Ryan Howard must be a platoon player too

Ryan Howard career vs. lefties = .226/.310/.444

Granderson career vs. lefties = .210/.270/.344

Howard still displays decent power vs. lefties.

That's because Howard is a better player. I'm not comparing the two other than to say that they both (comparatively) suck donkey balls against lefties (memo to Jim Tracy).

But that doesn't necessarily make Howard a platoon player. Of course, he's worse against lefties than he is against righties. However, he's not completely inept against them. He can still take a walk and knock one out of the park against southpaws, while Granderson turns into 2005 Corey Patterson.

I wasn't really suggesting that he is a platoon player. I was just being snarky in response to Erik's demonstrative "isn't it obvious he's a platoon player" post.

Here's a question to ponder......Is Granderson so much better than Marlon Byrd, that it's worth giving up a ton to get him? Say we have to give up Marshall/Guzman/Vitters/Fuld for him, for instance. Is it worth it? Especially considering we'll have him and Fukudome in the same lineup and will have to have at least one and possibly two right handed outfielders on the roster to use against lefties......

maybe he should be platooned most of the time against LHP, but that still gives him about 500 ABs a year. a line of something like .290/.365/.530 with very good defense and baserunning is a hell of a lot better than what we've got going on in CF/RF right now.

But how many really tough lefty starters are even in the NL? JOhan Santana, Cole Hamels, and Clayton Kershaw, and wed face each of them twice at most during the regular season.

It doesn't matter if it's a "tough" lefty or not. Regardless of the skills of the pitcher, if he throws with his left hand, he will get Granderson out. That includes all-star starters like the ones you mentioned, 5th starters, closers, and journeymen relievers. I'm sure a few of the more skilled left-handed peanut guys at Wrigley would probably get him out.

is he a platoon player if he's by far our best defensive option in cf?

I'm pretty sure a Reed Johnson (or somebody worse) would hit enough to make up the difference on defense.

Is he good enough in CF (in terms of runs saved or whatever defensive metric you care to use) on days the Cubs face a lefthander to justify playing him against lefhanders?

Curtis Granderson-OF-Tigers Nov. 13 - 3:38 pm et

According to Steve Kornacki of MLive.com, a Curtis Granderson trade is "unlikely to happen" this winter.

Tigers general manager Dave Dombrowski suggested the same thing Wednesday, yet rumors are still streaming in from all over involving some of the Tigers' bigger stars. "My personal feeling is that Detroit is not going to trade Curtis Granderson," an unnamed American League executive said Friday. "He’s like (Cleveland’s) Grady Sizemore. They don’t come along very often and Detroit is blessed to have him."

This guy doesnt think a trade will happen.

To be fair Granderson and Sizemore have similar stats in their respective careers (both debuted in 2004). The biggest difference is this, while Sizemore isn't great or even good against lefties, he isn't completely useless against lefties like Granderson is. So it doesn't surprise that Detroit isn't prepared to trade unless they get a good package.

Phil Rogers says the Cubs will "become aggressive" in acquiring Granderson if/when the Tigers decide to field offers for him.

Phil has no sources and is just assuming that. He's the same guy who said we should trade Castro and Marmol for him, despite the fact that Granderson is a platoon Center Fielder. There's no doubt the cubs would look into Granderson but i dont feel they'll be aggressive. I think Detroit will ask for either Vitters or Castro or both and Hendry will hang up and say thanks but no thanks.

Marmol, Marshall, Theriot, Colvin, and Fox for Granderson and Jackson?

That might be enough for one of them

Might? Really? A closer, a starting SS/2B, a guy who has excelled as a loogy(and can spot start) and a guy who has potential as a DH. Not to mention they're all very cheap and most under team control for a bit. They would instantly have 3 or 4 guys they would put on the field right now.

i feel like everyone is calling him a platoon cf to say that he's not very good.

Because he's not. He's a platoon player. They are 3 million dollar type players. Not 7-10 mill.

Not that he'd be worth what he'd require in a trade, but Granderson's splits vs. LHP/RHP were drastic enough in favor of his ability to hit RHP (.275/.358/.539/.897 BA/OBP/SLG/OPS) and complete inability to do the opposite (.183/.245/.239/.484) that I feel like if you platooned him in CF with Johnson or a similar player capable of hitting LHP, you'd end up with a reasonably productive platoon at the position.

A Granderson platoon with Johnson would produce badass results, but I don't know if Hendry would have enough payroll room to pay both of them.

In case anyone wants to start their morning out with a good laugh, a poster on the tigers.com board posted that a package of Marmol, Villters, and Castro (not 1 out of the group, but all 3 combined) would be a good start to a deal for granderson

Fine, hes a "platoon player", weve beaten this topic to death, but what some just dont seem to get is that hes on the right side of the platoon. Theres a lot more righties than lefties, and thats why a guy who can mash righties but not lefties is worth the 7-10 mil and a guy like Reed Johnson whose on the other side is worth 3 mil at best.

As said earlier, theres arent a lot of tough lefties out there, at least in the NL. I know he cant hit bad lefites well either, but hopefully, our offense is good enough vs. the weaker lefties than we can stand to have him toward the end of the lineup in those games, and when facing the Johans and Kershaws, start Johnson, or whoevers on the other side of the platoon.
