shouldn't the yankees have given up someone good in a trade for a good player?

Only if the other team requires it.

Byrnes: How about Robinson Cano?

Cashman: Make it Phil Coke and we have a deal.

Byrnes: Sweet!

Byrnes prolly thought he was getting a heir to the Coca-Cola fortune.

From the looks of the trade, I'd think it more likely he thought he was getting some blow.

How teams evaluate players has always fascinated me, but I just read that the Tigers asked for BOTH Ellsbury AND Buchholz for Granderson. If that's indeed true, how did they settle for what they did this quickly?

I'd take Scherzer/Schlereth/Jackson over Bucholz/Ellsbury 8 days a week if I'm being honest. I think Buchholz and Ellsbury's repitations are benefiting from being large market darlings.

On Mike and Mike, they just said that this trade really benefits all teams. Now, I'm not sure they know who Max Scherzer is but how on earth is this a good trade for Arizona, they seem to be getting absolutely hosed only to make Detroit better in the deal.

Rogers is really out to lunch if he thinks this is some kind of disaster. Which from the article, it seems like he's of that mindset.

The Yankees didn't need Granderson as badly as the Cubs. They already have Derek Jeter to be their leader and ambassador.

what the [expletive] does this even mean? and it was alone as a paragraph

Jeter's ambassadorship is worth about 15 wins. Didn't you know that? And him saying "Good job tonight, guys" adds another 10-12.

i understood the sucking off of jeter, i just don't understand why granderson would come in and be the "leader and ambassador" of the team.

Maybe he figures that Granderson being a nice guy and getting along with the media is the key to the Cubs winning 100 games next season.

According to an article in New York Daily News, Piniella is disappointed that the Cubs could not acquire Granderson. He believes he'll have a better OBP outside of the Tiger's line-up, as do other's in the Yankees organization.

The Cubs can still add an outfielder that can bat 5th (as Piniella mentions he wants) in Cameron, but he's a righty vs. Granderson who's a lefty.

<<"Our primary need is an outfielder who can hit fifth, and Granderson was our No. 1 choice," Piniella said Wednesday. "There was just no way we could get him, and once again the Yankees swooped in and got their man. I know he struck out a lot, but that's the product of being in that lineup over in Detroit where they all come out swinging. He probably tried to do too much last year and he was trying to pull the ball too much. When he gets over to the Yankees, he'll automatically become more selective just by association." >>

Seems like Cameron on a short term deal wouldn't be all that bad an option at this point.

There's no way Granderson becomes less pull conscious going to Yankee Stadium.

Whats annoying about the Granderson trade and about last year's trades is that it seems as if it went against what Piniella wanted. Piniella wanted Ibanez last year but yet Hendry said no and instead went after bradley. Piniella wanted Granderson this year and it appears that Hendry didnt bendover backwards to get him. Its true that Piniella wanted a left handed hitter after the 08 season but i doubt he ever wanted hendry to trade Derosa or let go of Wood in the process. As a GM yes you do need to make moves but you also need to listen to your manager. I'm starting to lose faith in Jim and if the cubs dont get rid of Bradley somehow, i have a feeling the Ricketts will lose faith and replace him.

One of Hendry's faults is that he listens to his manager too much. Lou wanted Granderson one second and wants Cameron the next. As much as Hendry wants to move Bradley, I'm sure Lou has told Hendry he doesn't want Bradley back either. Don't forget that Hendry has to clean up after Bradley makes a media mess, but Lou has to deal with him everyday in the clubhouse and in the dugout.
