The hell they need Pujols for? They are already up 5-0 with two nobodies jacking home runs

In the next 3 weeks without Pujols expect them to win 66% of their games

maybe 100%, judging by tonight. ludwick is as good as if not better than pujols, and rick ankiel is the next great CF. and let's not forget braden looper's dominant right arm.

So Taguchi given a standing ovation tonight in his return to St. Louis.

I really wasn't expecting that.

How Taguchi is he?

are you serious? they're trying way too hard to prove they're The Best Fans in Baseball.

Aaron Miles was the only pitcher to not give up a run in the 20-2 loss. He pitched a perfect inning.

Amazing, amazing.

You know whats the predictable thing? Phillies spent all their runs up last night, proceed to lose the last 2 games of the series and lose the series to the Cardinals.

Let's see what they do when Edmonds returns as a Cub.

I'll be there on the fourth!

Do I cheer or do I boo?

It'll be like the Futurama episode where the exploding supernova and the microwave popcorn combine and cause destruction; you'll see blue energy and red energy spreading and meeting in the middle and then a time-space hole gets torn open.

Pujols is hurt. Wainwright is on the DL. Wellemeyer is hurt. Molina is out now. Yet, they're still lucking into wins (2 errors lead to winning run in 10th). How lucky can a team be?

I posted this in the game thread forum but it applies here as well.

It really doesn't matter if yo consider them to be "lucky" or not, they are winning. Reading the constant whines and gripes about the luckiness of the Cardinals and theyre so called magic dust is really getting old. Teams overacheive and underachieve all the time, not everything works out to fit the "projections." I have been impressed with how they have played. They have had plenty of injuries and fair share of bad luck as well.

The Cubs are in the midst of playing some of their best baseball in years. Enjoy that, who cares what everyone else is doing right now. It would be one thing if the Cubs were struggling along and trailing St. Louis, but theyre not. The Cubs control their fate form here on out and with how they have played the first two months it shouldn't matter at this point how big the division lead is.

The "luck" argument reminds me of grade school.

If it was luck, how could they all be hurt?

They nearly gave that game away with all the HBP in the 8th.

Because they already had the season where no one gets hurt (2004). Now they get to have the season where everyone gets hurt and they inexplicably play well anyway.

It's not luck that teams that can still win despite injuries or that rotations built on rubber arms and guys coming off of injuries can pitch for an entire season.

For as much talk about STL playing over their heads, the Cubs have as well.

I can't imagine the reaction if the Cards had a mediocre closer turn into a great starter, a catching prospect who projected as a backup turn into a stud in his 3rd go round in AAA, a gritty SS far outperforming his minor league track record, a journeyman 2B turning into a legit all star candidate, an aging ex-Cub CF who looked to be toast turn into a serviceable player to fill the only void on the team, etc.

That's a little bit of hyperbole. Dempster has been good as a starter before, and DeRosa had his best year in 2006, before he signed with us. I think Rudy Jaramillo has more to do with DeRosa's success than anything else. And the Cards routinely have mediocre players perform well above the level their track record would indicate. That's not to mention that Theriot has begun to slide already. And Edmonds line with the Cubs isn't that much different than his line last year, when he wasn't hurt like he was in San Diego. It's not like the guy is OPS'ing 1.000 or anything.

Also lost in all the recent wins is that DLee, Kosuke, Soto and even ARam haven't been hitting a lot lately. Or that Howry and Wuertz have stunk for most of the season so far. Or that Hill fell apart, and Soriano has been hurt on and off.

Now I don't buy into the "Cardinal pixie dust" theory one little bit (LaRussa is a great manager and Duncan is a spectacular pitching coach). The Cubs have had some surprises, but the Cards have been playing much further above their heads than the Cubs. There was a reason they were predicted to finish in 4th or 5th place.

The Cards were expected to finish towards the btm b/c the Brewers have been a disappointment as well as Cincy, no one knew what to expect from Houston, and Pitt. was expect to finish last.

No one expected the Cubs to be on pace for 105 wins and one of the top run differentials of all-time at this point either.

Both teams are about 15 games ahead of what I likely expected from each of them (Cubs at 90) (Cards at 79 wins)
