Here is what Keith Law thinks about the Cubs

Keith Law: (1:07 PM ET ) The Cubs don't have the young players needed to acquire Santana or, for that matter, Bedard.

Kevin (Manassas): You would not take Pie, Veal, Cedeno, Patterson, Colvin, and Gallagher or some combination close to that for Bedard?

Keith Law: (1:16 PM ET ) That's a pile of stuff - quantity, but not quality. And while I like Pie's tools, his value is slightly diminished because 1) his MLB performance in '07 wasn't great and 2) the Cubs have made it seem like they don't like him. Gallagher's a 4th starter type. Colvin, Cedeno, and Patterson are bench guys. Adding more names isn't the key - the key is replacing three extra guys in that offer with one impact guy. The Cubs can't do that right now.

I don't see how pretty much naming him the opening day starting CF at 23 years old is making it seem like they don't like him.

Keith Law also thinks Moustakas was the 11th best player in last year's draft.

He really said that? I don't see anyway he's that low with his raw stuff and good debut.

I'm assuming it would have been pre-draft, yes?

134 pages on Brian Roberts?

Haven't you been paying attention? It's now about a blockbuster Santana-Lincecum-Cain-Bedard-Roberts-Griffey-Crawford-ARod for Patterson-Murton-Cedeno-Gallagher-Marshall-Lieber-Colvin trade

Man, I'm glad we're going to get this done without giving up Pie and Hill..... Hendry truly is amazing.

Yeah, but is Griffey that much of an upgrade over Pie?

Hmm, the joke must have sucked. Oh well, those numbers are interesting though.

He's at least a marginal upgrade over Pie, maybe even a significant upgrade - it just depends on what you define marginal and significant as.

He's definitely not a minor upgrade, though.

He's like a -20 defensive CF these days. Pie's at least +10. If we assume a .295 EqA for Griffey (hes done that once in the least four years) and assume a gets enough PT for 400 outs (he hasn't topped that figure in the last NINE seasons), as long as Pie EqA's .250 it's a tie. In other words, if Pie hits like Ryan Theriot he's an upgrade over Griffey in CF.

See I don't hate Pie.

Who's ready for some INSIDER UPDATES? =D> :D

First off, OH is saying Bedard to the M's will happen very very very soon, likely this weekend or early next. Here's a few quotes:

Again, I have a friend in the press, who is a big O's fan like me. He again talked to someone in the press in The Seattle area, and this is what was passed along.

His contact told him that a deal with another AL team, for a big pitcher is almost done. The Seattle contact speculated it would be Bedard & a possible thrown in player, for four Mariner prospcts headed by Jones. He didnt have any other Mariner names, but heard the name Tillman being linked.

My guy said he would call me tomorrow if he heard anything else.

Take it for what its worth, ME I take everything with a grain of salt these days, but it was something to throw out.

Peace

Which BigBird confirmed.

Now this is actually something said by the Baltimore beat writer guy on the radio:

FWIW- Jeff Zrebiec (sp?) from the Sun was on Schmuck's radio show today. He "predicts" Bedard will be traded to the M's by the middle of the week and Roberts will be a Cub by the end of the week or early the following week. He also said he believes the Orioles are counting on getting a closer in one of the deals (specifically mentioned Sherrill) because he has spoken to the agents of all remaining closers on the FA market and they confirmed the Orioles have not contacted any of them.

Likely Sherrill..but maybe Dempster?

And here's the JoeyR5 guy who posts on OH and the Cubs prosportsdaily site:

Moe is 100% right. Bedard will be an M, and very very very soon.

Roberts will also be a Cub very soon. As in almost directly after Bedard is gone, FWIW.

I'll see if I can dig up any more info from him.

Long viva this thread.

Thanks for the update, though, Rammy. Speculation is always fun, but fuel helps a lot. Just take this stuff for what it's worth (lawl).

Exactly. They've called a few things right before, so it gives some hope. If they are wrong, who cares? Beats talking about how bad Theriot is for the entire offseason...

Look how happy he looks. He has no idea how much of our time he's wasting.

No, no, long threads and rumors apparenly break into some posters' homes at night, kill their pets and steal their valuables. Clearly, it's a horrible thing to have to deal with long threads and rumors in a slow offseason. God forbid, right? I feel so bad that everyone has to put up with it...such an ordeal! HORRIBLE. Thank God they can complain about how long a thread is...by posting in it and making it longer! YEEHAW!

That Joey guy (not an O's insider, a guy with supposed Cubs contacts that recently started posting on OH) claims that the Cubs offer for Bedard and Roberts included Pie, Gallagher, Murton, and Hill (and more). I'm glad the M's are apparently offering a better package for Bedard, because exchanging Hill for Bedard in the rotation would've been a slightly better than lateral move, at best, and potentially worse.

I like that this keeps going because it gives me something to read everyday. However, I am going to be even happier when Roberts is traded to the Cubs. I think he is going to be a great addition to the club. Derosa is a very fine ball player, and he will find his at bats durring the season probrally spelling time for when Roberts, Ramierez, possibly even Lee go down for short periods. The Cubs do not have a utility player of Derosa's proven ability and that alone will strengthen the team.

More groundbreaking stuff by these guys. I've heard the phrase "very very soon" about 100 times this offseason.

The law of averages says "very very soon" someone at OH is bound to get something right based on the amount and number of times they've thrown "stuff" up against the wall and hoped it stuck.

My guy says that the Roberts to Cubs trade is done, but the Cubs are delaying the announcement because they want to give SoxFest its weekend in the sun.

Baltimore beat writer agreeing with the Bedard thing and players the OH mentioned:

If Erik Bedard is still listed on the Orioles’ 40-man roster beyond next week, I’ll be very surprised. My crystal ball keeps showing Adam Jones, George Sherrill and Chris Tillman reporting to Fort Lauderdale Stadium. They have another guy with them, but his image is fuzzy.

Exactly what they've been saying (those 3 and the only holdup is over the 4th prospect).

Are you serious or are you poking fun at those guys at Oriole hangout?

He's kidding. And if I hear this deal is "very close" one more time my head may explode.

If true, I hope it's not Pie for Roberts and Byrd for Murton and Gallagher. I can see Hendry do something stupid like that

According to that Joeyguy on OH the two trades will look like this :

O's get : Jones, Tillman, Sherril and Chen

M's get : Bedard

Cubs get : Roberts

O's get : Gallagher , Murton and Cedeno

He said that Roberts to cubs will happen very soon after Bedard to the M's is completed. I know this is about the 500 time we have heard this but this time there are 2 guys from the baltimore sun saying that Bedard should be gone next week.

As much as I hate to even acknowledge OH related speculation, I could certainly live with giving up those players for Roberts.

Agreed, but I would still like to get Bedard somehow.

While I don't know about its authenticity, that trade deal does fit all the available facts.

1) There are numerous sources that seem to suggest that the Bedard trade is close

2) When the Gallagher, Marshall, and Cedeno deal came out in the press it was remarked as inaccurate. The reason it was labeled as inaccurate due to some sources (including Navigator's source) was that one of the players was wrong. Also, many people thought that the Roberts trade would never come until after Bedard was traded.

Numerous sources later said including Rosenthal that the Cubs did not want to trade Marshall, and that he was likely the wrong one in the deal. At the same time, Murton is reported as being very available. Also, every report has Gallagher as the centerpiece in any deal. So Gallagher and Murton are two likely pieces, and Cedeno is the only one that hasn't had a ton of rumors about.

So the "sources" may be completely inaccurate, or even this new guy might have made them up. It's hard to tell. What is true though, is that the trade is very logical. I don't think anybody would seriously question that these three teams would be willing to make these trades, it's just a question now if the trades will be executed or not.

That deal makes it seem like a pretty good deal for the Cubs.

Cedeno/Gallegher/Fuld/Marquis would be nicer though.

Murton/Marshall/Theriot/ for Greene

I'm still dreaming.
