To go from wanting at least three players down to a possible Gallagher + Colvin???

:-k

What's "WRONG" with Colvin that makes so many people cool with throwing him in? I mean... it seems like some here would discard him without a second thought. Looking at his numbers, he looks like a good prospect. I'm not all that excited about trading away strong potential for a minor upgrade at 2nd base. Maybe I'm off base on his potential. Help me understand. I confess to not being the baseball scholars you guys are, so please educate me.

Oh know you didn't use the m-word. Here we go again.

I like Colvin, but I don't think too highly of him. I think he can be a regular but never a star unless he dramatically learns how to get on base more often. I think he's good trade bait before he gets too far along in his minor league career.

Most people's problems with Colvin is his BB/K ratio which is pretty horrible. I'm not ready to write him off(not to say most are writing him of altogether) yet, but if he doesn't improve the BB/K ratio(even slightly) it's going to be tough to maintain top prospect status.

I think another problem people have with him is that a lot of his value is tied to his ability to play CF where he is blocked by a superior prospect in Pie.

EDIT: just pointing out that while talking about a player's Ks at the major league level is usually pointless, high K numbers in the minor levels without the BBs to go with it is a red flag.

Holding on too long to prosects is like... standard protocol for the cubs so I guess it's cool to get value while you can. I just got a knot in my butt about giving up too early on a player that might be special. Blahh... gotta give to get. I just wanna "Get" sometimes without giving up a lot. Color me greedy. Long run, maybe the majority is right and Colvin really is nothing to give up.

Here is what Keith Law thinks about the Cubs

Keith Law: (1:07 PM ET ) The Cubs don't have the young players needed to acquire Santana or, for that matter, Bedard.

Kevin (Manassas): You would not take Pie, Veal, Cedeno, Patterson, Colvin, and Gallagher or some combination close to that for Bedard?

Keith Law: (1:16 PM ET ) That's a pile of stuff - quantity, but not quality. And while I like Pie's tools, his value is slightly diminished because 1) his MLB performance in '07 wasn't great and 2) the Cubs have made it seem like they don't like him. Gallagher's a 4th starter type. Colvin, Cedeno, and Patterson are bench guys. Adding more names isn't the key - the key is replacing three extra guys in that offer with one impact guy. The Cubs can't do that right now.

I don't see how pretty much naming him the opening day starting CF at 23 years old is making it seem like they don't like him.

I think Law could use a little more knowledge, but the Cubs let Pie languish on the bench last year and they've let it be know that they are at least looking for a platoon partner for him. However, according to his father Sean G. lost 25 pounds over the winter has been touching the high 90's on the gun. If he can get control of his pitches I think he can be more than a 4th starter. Colvin and Patterson I don't have much use for either since they moved Patterson from 2nd. If Colvin cannot handle CF his value also plummets.

The funny thing is that If they traded Colvin, Patterson, Pie, and Cedeno they would be trading 3.5 centerfielders and .5 SS. Ronny has been working in the OF this Winter (not well if one wants to go by errors).

Those errors have come mostly at SS. Not that that makes him a good CF.

Heh, I hadn't completely realized that the Lieber signing was another extension of Hendry's 2007-08 offseason fixation on player-handedness.

I too am a fan of players with hands.

... and Jim Abbott cries quietly in the corner

I don't know if I'd do Gallagher and Colvin. I like Colvin a lot. And I think the Cubs do, which is the reason they may trade Pie for pitching. I like Felix more than Colvin, but so does the rest of the league. Pie is also closer to the majors, therefore has more value. I'd trade Felix for a legitimate (key word) upgrade on this team, and go after a stopgap CF for 2008, in hopes that Colvin can contribute in 2009.

134 pages on Brian Roberts?

Haven't you been paying attention? It's now about a blockbuster Santana-Lincecum-Cain-Bedard-Roberts-Griffey-Crawford-ARod for Patterson-Murton-Cedeno-Gallagher-Marshall-Lieber-Colvin trade

Man, I'm glad we're going to get this done without giving up Pie and Hill..... Hendry truly is amazing.

Yeah, but is Griffey that much of an upgrade over Pie?

So this deal is done right?

My guy says it is.

No, my guy does. You called him a basterd and said you wouldn't trust him.

You're mistaken. That was my other guy.

That's what YOU say but how would Phil Rogers score it.............................................. :-k

Just needed to re-up my commitment to the greatest thread ever.

Seriously though, I'm thinking no more major moves before opening day. Would have probably happened by now. Pitchers & Catchers are about to report, everyone's getting ready for ST. Very little chatter out there other than the odd rumor here & there. I think this is it.

Despite Hendry saying "I wish I could be talking to you with us done, but unfortunately that's not the case"?
