I think it was this thread where Meph convinced me that a Felix Pie for Khalil Greene swap wouldn't be such a bad idea. Why it was in this thread I don't remember

Probably because there's nothing else to discuss in here.

I don't know if there is any easy way to find out, but I wonder how many members have posted in this thread?

one more.

+1

Sorry, I know this is a pointless post, but I had to chime in and just couldn't bear the thought of getting left behind in this historic thread. Here's to page 133!

I think someone convinced me that Rey Sanchez was not going to be able to replace Ryne Sandberg's numbers at 2B somewhere in this thread.

"I've been telling everybody by the end of the month," said MacPhail when asked if there was a deadline to decide whether to keep or trade Bedard and Roberts. "But it's not necessarily a calendar issue. There is no magic date between January 22 and February 2. The date that probably matters more is Feb. 13."

To this point, trade talks have moved slowly for the admittedly deliberate MacPhail. The Chicago Cubs remain the likely landing spot for Roberts for a package that is expected to include pitcher Sean Gallagher and one of the Cubs' young outfielders. The two teams have discussed several scenarios, but have yet to agree on a package.

MacPhail declined to characterize the likelihood of Bedard and Roberts being on the Orioles' Opening Day roster.

"There is certainly a strong likelihood that they would both be on the Opening Day roster unless we are satisfied that something that comes back in return will benefit our franchise," he said. "We've been pretty up front telling people what the formula is. We are ready, we are willing and we have the resources to help people win in 2008. But in exchange for that, we have to feel like somebody is going to help us beyond 2008."

If they want to rebuild, they need to stop crying over there and demanding 10 times more than their players are worth. Gallagher and Murton is enough...2 young guys that will help them beyond 2008..I thought the Rays were a pain to trade with...But the Orioles take the title in that category without a doubt..

I'm glad I'm not Baltimore and giving up on 2008 before the season starts, but I can't blame them for holding out for as much as they can get. They can suck with Roberts and Bedard, or they can suck without them. The question becomes how bad do you want the players?

Sounds like this trade is going to happen in the next 24 hours.

Was that before or after the discussion of which "current" Cub player was the best - Tinkers, Evers or Chance?

The Cubs remain poised to extend their off-season trading and free-agent spending spree with little regard to the pending sale of the franchise.

"I like our club; I think we're better than we were last year. I think it's still important that we do a few more things before we get to [spring training]," Cubs general manager Jim Hendry said recently. "I wish I could be talking to you with us already done. Unfortunately, we think we have some work left to do."

Hendry did not name specific players the team might be targeting, but free-agent outfielders such as Shannon Stewart and Kenny Lofton remain on the market. And the rumored deals involving Marlon Byrd of the Rangers and Brian Roberts and Erik Bedard of the Orioles remain viable with some tweaking.

"We've done some things we had to do. We're very happy with [outfielder] Kosuke Fukudome. That really was imperative," Hendry said. "And what we did with [signing] Jon Lieber was a good thing. It gives us some depth in the rotation. We're trying to get as much volume as we can between the rotation and the bullpen."

Having enough money to compete with other teams does not seem to be the problem for the Cubs. Spending wisely remains the key.

"I know people wouldn't believe that, but we have been given a fair payroll number, an increase from [$100 million] last year [to an estimated $120 million]. I have been working with Crane Kenney for the last five years. He has been very good to work with. I have only met [new Tribune Co. Chairman] Sam Zell one time, at the end of the season. But he has entrusted Crane to oversee the operation.

"I know it doesn't sound like it's possible, but it really has been business as usual. We hired some more scouts who can help—Dave Littlefield, the ex-Pirates GM. We've hired Bill Harford. We have a good situation here. We really haven't been affected negatively at all."

The Cubs were favored to win their division last season, yet they had to scramble to overtake the upstart Milwaukee Brewers to make the postseason.

"Our division, with the exception of Cincinnati, is a right-handed-hitting division," Hendry said. "So it made some sense [to sign Lieber]. There is still a lot of activity possible. There are still a lot of free agents on the wall. You hear about three or four more marquee names who still could be traded. I don't recall a year when we had this much volume of good people possibly available in the middle of January."

Hopefully er'tr in on those 3 or 4 good people.

given enough time in this vast universe, all possible things will happen. What does this mean? Given enough time, Brian Roberts will be traded to the Cubs! (probably in a few billion years on another planet)

why does it seem that just about every baseball owner not named George Steinbrenner views his team as either a) a business venture in which you spend as little as possible for most possible profit or b) as their little pet project where they get to play with superstars but really don't know what the eff they're doing?

I can't remember if I've posted in this thread.

So just in case I didn't...

P.S. Has anyone started a petition yet to have Go Cubs Go put on the next edition of Guitar Hero? Link?

I would argue that, for almost the first twenty years that Steinbrenner owned the Yankees, he played with superstars and didn't know what he was doing, either. He also treated it as a business venture, but was smart (lucky?) enough to make a massive profit.

According to Rotoworld:

Brian Roberts-2B- Orioles Jan. 24 - 9:17 am et

The Baltimore Sun's Jeff Zrebiec writes that the Cubs remain the most likely destination for Brian Roberts, but that Erik Bedard will likely end up in Seattle.

The teams are reportedly discussing a deal that would send pitcher Sean Gallagher and an outfielder to Baltimore, whereas previous reports had the Orioles interested in Ronny Cedeno. The names that the teams have kicked around probably include Matt Murton, 2006 first-round pick Tyler Colvin, or even Felix Pie. Zrebiec also thinks that Bedard will likely end up in Seattle after a deal that centers around Adam Jones.

To go from wanting at least three players down to a possible Gallagher + Colvin???

Heh, I hadn't completely realized that the Lieber signing was another extension of Hendry's 2007-08 offseason fixation on player-handedness.

I too am a fan of players with hands.

Probably the most amazing thing about this thread it that it is approximately 7800 views away from having 100,000 views.

I think we should strive for 200 pages and 200,000 views.

Trade's gonna happen soon. I heard from a guy.

I know that bastard and I wouldn't trust him.

I know that guy too, I told him to get in the back and let his wife drive.
