Trade secrets

There are a lot of denials out there, but major league sources are still indicating that the Cubs are listening to talk about a blockbuster deal that would send Baltimore ace Erik Bedard and second baseman Brian Roberts to Chicago for a truckload of younger players/prospects. The Cubs are also entertaining the thought of dealing former Sox farmhand Matt Murton to San Diego. Towers said, "We're trying to add another outfielder, a younger guy we can have under our control for a while."

Doubt it since it seems like him to the Mariners is all but done, but it is from today so I thought i'd post it. I woulnd't be surprised if MacPhail and Hendry have the Roberts thing agreed on until Bedard is traded and Jim is helping Seattle raise their ante. I could see MacPhail telling Bavassi: "Well we're going to take the Cubs offer of Pie, Hill, and a buncha minor leaguers (obviously not real) unless you replace Sherill with Truinfel", or something like that.

it is a shame that we aren't going to get bedard because that trade would be super cool

my prediction is that these trades will undoubtedly go down this next week

mark it dude!

Giving up Hill in a trade for Bedard would in no way be super cool.

That doesn't give any reason to trade Hill for him

The key to acquiring Bedard is that the rotation would be complete.

Trading Hill for Bedard is a slight upgrade but it still leaves a spot open.

true...doing the trade without hill is the preferred option, but if that can't be done...bedard is better than a slight upgrade...so it would make the rotation stronger...

I really hope Murton isn't included for Roberts, so we can somewhat offset the loss of Gally with SD. Hopefully we could get a very good pitching prospect like Latos (doubtful), but even if we got someone like Inman it would make losing Gallagher a little less of a blow.

Be better if they didn't want Gallagher. I'd really like to hang onto Sean at this point and throw Marshall in there. At the beginning of this offseason, I looked at Gallagher as one of the top trading chips. Now, with all the things I have heard about his losing weight and increasing velocity, I see him as the best candidate to start in the Cubs rotation.

I'm not just saying this to flatter you, but it seems as if Sean has been the hardest working Cub (minors or majors) the last few offseasons. One of the early knocks was that he wouldn't be able to increase velocity, then he did after A-ball. Then it was weight or that he was a 4th starter at best, but again he has worked hard in the offseason. And he's always put up the numbers. I'd trust him in the ML rotation more today than Marquis, Dempster, Leiber, or Marshall.

I agree. I've considered Gallagher the Cubs' best pitching prospect for the past year or two, and he's done nothing over that time to suggest to me he wouldn't be a strong addition to our MLB rotation. I still think he may benefit from a bit more time in AAA, but given his very young age I don't see that as a knock against him.

I realize that Roberts is a good player, and that the Cubs must be expected to give up something of value if they wish to trade for him. I just hate to give up what I view as the Cubs' best bet to get cheap, good production out of a pitcher over the next few years. (Thereby dooming us to continue filling out the rotation with the Marquis and Liebers of the world at a cost of $6-$8 million instead of $350k.)

I'm with you both.

Bedard really isn't better than a slight upgrade. He's barely even an upgrade. They're almost the same pitcher.

fine trade for brian roberts and erik bedard allowing hill and pie to go, but then trade for khalil greene with murton +, sign kenny lofton and ill be happy. i could care less about getting roberts and bedard, it's probably a wash trade but man oh man it's worth getting a real SS.

1. Brian Roberts, 2B

2. Kenny Lofton, CF

3. Derrek Lee, 1B

4. Kosuke Fukudome, RF

5. Aramis Ramirez, 3B

6. Alfonso Soriano, LF

7. Khalil Greene, SS

8. Geovany Soto, C

1. Carlos Zambrano

2. Erik Bedard

3. Ted Lilly

4. Jason Marquis

5. Jon Lieber

Not happening, but I just got back from Mass so I am certainly in a mood to be nice, might as well ask me questions while Im in a good mood. I also got my official GRE scores back so I in a doubly good mood. (I didnt know my exact writing)

That team would be expected to score about 855 runs, allowing around 725. 93 wins.

If must be a slow off season if we wait with baited breath for every word that guys with names like Peace and Big Bird have to say.

These "insiders" are probably the washrooom attendants at Oriole headquarters.

Why do people here keep slamming people on other team's boards as if they're saying these things just to mess wih us?

Some of us are WAY too wound up over this.

I'm agreeing with you a lot. Watch out, though. Someone is going to call you out for coming to the defense of the insiders.

I have no knowledge of who is who on the Orioles board except for what was posted earlier in this thread. I will point out though, that the only labeled insider talking about the Cubs and Roberts during this whole thread on Bedard appears to be a new poster to the Orioles board with a supposed Cubs source whose veracity is openly questioned on the board. Link to Orioles Hangout Insider Re-cap.

Their board has been a joke as far as inside information. According to them, Roberts was traded to the Cubs weeks ago.

Bingo! You are absolutely correct sir.

Too bad Voice of Reason is already taken, How about I let you borrow it for today?

Things could speed up pretty soon. Adam Jones is being held out today in the championship series for his winterball team in Venezuela, and these are pretty big games for people over there IIRC. All the comments lately point to the dominoes falling quickly once they took care of Bedard.

This is what i've personally thought all along, that Roberts would be traded right after Bedard. It makes no sense for Baltimore to deal their second best chip if they might noeven move their 1st.

Bruce has even told us that MacPhail wants to deal Bedard first, and he's repeated that Roberts is still our number 1 target via trade. Personally, I think the deal is already agreed on based if Bedard gets traded. There was too much smoke from the reliable guys at the OH(not the random people who suddenly had contacts), for there to be no fire.

I am watching the game on espn deportes and i can confirm that Jones isn't in the lineup but i heard the commentators say some interesting things.

1) Jones has been completely taken off the roster by cardenales.

2) Jones leaving the team was a huge surprise.

3) It wasn't Jones decision to leave.

dun dun dun

If this is true then Bedard to Seattle has to be practically done. You don't take one of your teams biggest bats off the roster during the World Series.

Posted

Belkast hinting that it's done. Soemone said they didn't think that Jones being held out would mean anything and he replied:

I guess you won't mind being wrong. Am I right? Good things to come ladies and gentlemen.....

Asked if the Roberts thing would follow he said "things should get busy", and said very very soon after.

This is not a tease at all. Finally the future is near.

And the first person to complain about me posting this, I offer you a preemptive shutup. If you don't like it, don't respond. There's a certain group of posters that have called various specific things that I can note for the last 3 years, and Belkast is one of them.

I'm very confident that the Bedard trade is going to happen soon (way too may weird things happening on that one from the mariners board report, to Jones getting taken off the roster today, to the insiders saying soon all at the same time). Any one of those things would have made me slightly skeptical, but together I think makes it pretty likely.

The Roberts deal is I think likely (70% or so). The only thing we have is insider reports and the thought all along that Roberts would be traded after Bedard. The insiders have been having an awful offseason, and because of that they've talked in much, much more vague terms lately which is what a person with contacts would do, not a person without contacts just having fun. At the same time, all signs point to the fact that MacPhail is trying to run a tight ship and stop leaks, so misinformation could be out there again. It's really hard to tell. I wouldn't say the Roberts deal regardless would be soon though (next day or two). If it happens, it would be anytime in the 2 weeks following the Bedard deal.

That's one more tiny benefit from the Roberts trade (although not that much of a benefit). It likely keeps Theriot from being anywhere near the top of the order without an injury and keeps Pie from batting 8th. Again, it's only a small benefit because of how relatively little lineup order means, but it does add a little more.

I still think that if we get Roberts, it means Soriano will move down in the order. I don't think Soriano leading off is as set in stone as everyone thinks.

As for how I'd line it up (I know Lou is gonna wanna split up his lefties, though)...

2B - Roberts

RF - Fukudome

1B - Lee

3B - Aramis

LF - Sori

C - Geovany Soto

CF - Pie

SS - Theriot (Ugh)
