I will be so irate if Matsuzaka gets blocked from the MLB becasue the stupid Red Sox wanted to Eff around with the stupid Yankees.

MLB said they would step in if anything like that happened. Also, the Red Sox have a strong need for starting pitching. They really could use Matsuzaka.

If MLB determined that the Red Sox have no real intentions of signing Matsuzaka would he go back to Japan or would the team that had the second highest bid have the opportunity to sign him.

The team with the second highest bid will have the opportunity to sign him.

Who knows? A NY Times article suggested he might go to the next highest bidder. If the Red Sox didn't bid in good faith, I'd love to see MLB rule that Matsuzaka goes to the next highest bidder and the Red Sox have to pay Seibu the difference between their bid and the next higgest bid. But I doubt the penalty would have that much teeth.

I saw Buster Olney talk about the situation the other day on ESPN. He said that the Red Sox are looking to plant their flag in the Far East, with baseball continuing to grow over there. Also, he said that once the Red Sox have his rights, they have all the leverage - either he signs with them, or stays in Japan. So, he said if they offer something like 4/$40M, he'd have to take it, even if he felt like he could do better as a free agent in the U.S. His opinion was that the Red Sox fully intend to sign him, and I agree.

I agree the winning bidder would have a ton of leverage, and 4/$40M would represent a large raise for Matsuzaka. I think he'd jump at it. But he could go back to Japan for a season, and hope the Lions would post him again if he were really dissatisfied with the offer. I don't see it happening, but he doesn't have to take anything. He's only 26.

I don't see why the second team doesn't get a chance to sign him if the first team that wins the bidding doesn't. For example...if Boston offers 10 per year for 4 years and he says no, the Yanks have to offer at least 20% more than Boston to get him to make it fair so the player doesn't just sign with the team he wants to.

Because agents would use this as an under the table way to make the player a FA. A team like the Yankees could low ball the bid knowing they would just offer the player more money.

But say the Yanks had 5 teams ahead of them. If Boston offers a 4/40 they would have to offer a 4/80 unless my math is wrong. The second team has to offer 20% more and it goes to 40 to the 3rd and so on.

It depends if you add on 20% of the original bid or 20% of the previous bid.

If it's the former then you be right and the Yankees would offer 4/80.

If it's the latter then the bids would go 40, 48, 57.6, 69.12, 82.94, 99.53.

I could see Baltimore throwing in a high bid and then walk away from the table just to keep him from the Red Sox or Yankees but I don't see the Red Sox doing that.

Beckett

Schilling

Matzuka

Wakefield

Papelbon /Clement/Lester/Clemens

is a pretty sweet rotation there has been some Talk that Clemens might return to Boston mid way through the season the way he did with the Astros that should give Boston enough Horse to beat out the Yanks. They also have Lester in the wings if his health allows him to pitch next season.

The Angels bid for star Japanese pitcher Daisuke Matsuzaka this week and could find out by Monday whether they have won negotiating rights to him

Didn't see this posted anywhere else but having the Angels owner in this the way he throws around money is scary. This could allow them to move one of there starters for an impact bat like Tejeda or Vernon Wells.

My mind has changed on this I think Buster Olney info is so vague that it could very well prove to be wrong. I am holding out hope the only reports I have seen about him going to the Red Sox have been reports feeding off of the one Buster Olney made. Anyone else find it weird that Buster Olney would get this info and not Red Sox favorite Peter Gammons?

If the Cubs got word we'd won the Matsuzaka bidding today and the rumor about us offering Drew a contract that could be finished today are true...

I guess Matsuzaka, Aramis, Drew, and Wood would have to qualify as a pretty good day.

i would be real surprised to see a deal for drew before the matsuzaka winner was announced since the cubs and red sox are expected to be serious contenders for both.

Kaplan was on WGN radio about half an hour ago and said that he believes the Cubs bid was $24MM. Doesn't sound like that will be enough to get it done, but we'll see.

I've read on another board that Kaplan also said that the Japanese team might think the BoSox offer is fishy (blocking another team or something), and might take the 2nd highest bid, which he said the Cubs would stand much more of a chance then. Did he mention this?

24 still wouldn't beat Texas or NY, but it gives us a little more hope.
