3.93 ERA, 65/41 K/BB, 1.39 WHIP in 2004. If he returns to that form he'd be a nice addition - if he is still the Day of 2005 with a near-7.00 ERA and a WHIP above 2, well, we probably won't see him pitch for the Cubs.

Not much of a gamble, so I like this move.

Anyone else read the part about the arm injury?!?
Yes. Apparently we need more injured pitchers in order to have a full five-man simulated game rotation.

Sweet, I was wondering how long it'd be before even our "finesse" pitchers have no control.

One of the interesting things about Day is that throughout his big league career, his earned runs given up has been nealry identical to his walks given up:

2002 - 15 walks 15 ER

2003 - 59 walks 61 ER

2004 - 45 walks 51 ER

2005 - 32 walks 36 ER

He only gives up 1 HR every 10 innings for his career, so that isn't a major problem (though Montreal and Washington as home stadiums). With K/BB totals of 176/161 in 361 innings for his career, it's clear his issue has always been control and lack of a dominant pitch.

Who knows, maybe th guy can figure it out. He's only 27 and pitchers sometimes have late clocks, particularly finesse guys. A pitcher of his style has to recognize that big league umps are only going to give you the corner if you earn it. Keep walking 4 guys every 9 innings, and you won't get that corner.

He sounds like a guy that would benefit from having Greg Maddux as a teammate.

Well I'm listening to ESPN 1000 and havent heard Zach Day's name mentioned once...

B/c there is no truth to this rumor.

Or because Zach Day is pretty insignificant...

Maybe it's more significant than the Kerry Ligtenberg signing? Probably neither would constitute "breaking news."

This blog has reported accurate, breaking news in the past ahead of many other sports sites, including Chicagosports and ESPN.

When it became obvious that the news wasn't being reported anywhere else, this blog updated its information to say that it was initially heard over a radio report, and that as time went on, it appeared more and more to be merely a rumor.

This blog's co-owner is entirely happy to be wrong in this case. Zach Day would not be a good claim for the Cubs.
