WC2 - SD +1.0
WC3 - PHI --

OUT - ARI 2.0

 

BTW, Arizona holds the tiebreaker over Philly.  Their path would be either sweeping SD OR going 2-1 and the Phillies going 0-3

Love to see Az win out and the padres to lose today and then, obviously, lose out. Phillies lose 2 of 3. That would give Az the 5 and Phillies the 6 seed. Padres out.

If I’m remembering right, yesterday they won 4-1, went 1-1 with RISP, hit 2 solo HRs that both came with 2 outs while Philly went like 0-13 with RISP.

That Phillies loss is big for sure - puts us one full game play the tie breaker, which is nice. Now if the Dodgers can take care of business that would be sweet. Home field would be fantastic

Imagine being fans of the Guardians, having to grind through every game, they are really bad offensively.  Lost 1-0 yesterday, won 1-0 tonight, I don't know if we could stomach a team unable to consistently score runs, basically what the Cubs were in May for the whole season.

Well we just scored 6 runs in 30 innings against the second worst road ERA team in the majors.

They really are a garbage franchise that caught lightening in bottle twice.  Only 7 winning seasons in their entire history and the two times the managed to win 90+ games they, of course, won the WS.

To highlight how different this year could have gone, the Cubs have the 29th ranked  pitching FWar in MLB. The last ten teams to rank 29th in that stat in a full 162 game season (including the 2021 Cubs) had an average record of 66-96, with three 100+ loss teams. It is an absolute miracle this team has a chance at 90 wins heading into the last series.

Looks like the Padres are about to go to 15-2 in their last 17 games. What a run. Given the Phillies loss tonight its gonna be harder to drop to 6th so going from Chicago to Boston to Tampa to San Diego is looking like the most likely outcome for the next 6 days

Decent chance we host though, right, even if it's more likely we're on the road?  We have the tiebreaker and we're playing a team with no motivation to win, while for at least one game, Arizona has all the motivation to win. If SD and Phi both win tomorrow, that equation changes. But if Arizona wins tomorrow, they still have motivation on Saturday, doubly so if Philly loses tomorrow.

Best case scenario.  Az sweeps Padres. Cubs get at least 1 in Boston.  Phillies get no more than 1 win vs Tampa. Let's go!

It’s tbd because of outcomes from games today. Wheeler is ready to go. But my guess is they won’t use him if they don’t have to. It doesn’t look good for them if they want home field. I don’t think wheeler will pitch just for that. With Sanchez going today, on normal rest he wouldn’t be ready for Tuesday. If they use wheeler tomorrow he is the game 3 starter.  I don’t think they want that. I see Luzardo threw and they may activate him. He is the wild card. If he can go they could do Luzardo, Sanchez and Wheeler. But I am not sure what is happening with Luzardo. I think the Cubs end up with SD again. Question is, where? Probably in SD and Phillies probably get the last spot.

Another example of just how weird of a season this has been.
 

The Cubs are 11-10 against teams 20+ games under 500,

21-24 against the awful American League, despite a +52 run differential

22-9 against NL teams 10+ games over 500 who aren’t the piss ant Brewers in the regular season. 

Also a combined 22-5 vs the Reds, Mets and Phillies, in contrast to 9-16 in 2025.
