I knew he was not long for the roster but figured they'd wait until after the deadline. Either they have some things lined up or they didn't want to give him another start and watch him surrender 4 HRs.

Hope we can blow the cards out one game this week and get 2-3 innings out of Wantz before his release.

Did he have one year performing up to salary? It was 4/18aav?

Yeah, he provided a touch of excess value in 2024 with 2.5 fWAR.  It was much less under water going into this year at 4.9 total fWAR but the -1.1 this year completely killed it.

Not surprised it happened but definitely surprised it happened this quickly.  Craig's comments last night weren't super ambiguous but I did think they didn't want to dump him until the deadline.

Still surprised he was DFA’d

I'm not. And it's a good sign the Cubs are going to do that.

He's not a reliever. He's on the last year of his deal. And outside of Civale, who's going before him? They have Rea. They have Assad. They both do what he'd do better.

This is a good sign about the deadline intentions,

A bit surprised but glad it was done.  I guess doesn't have any value as a long reliever either, and no experience at it.

Better for him anyways to try to sign with another team and try to prove he can still start before the offseason than pitch in relief for us.

I remember when P&C reported in spring training, they were reporting about how good he looks, how his fastball looked faster, all the positive blah blah blah about him, then he gets rocked in ST games, and it never got better.

😅

I thought the "kick change" they added in the pitch lab was supposed to fix everything?

It did in the 2nd half of 2025.  Not this year, though.
