can’t tell if this is just Jesse assuming or what based on this FO track record. But if he’s correct and Jed has zero intent to try and retain Tucker, then what’s the point? We aren’t one player away. We’ve been a .500 franchise for years now and currently sit at the .500 mark as is going into next year. We aren’t in a position to trade away multiple year assets for one player that doesn’t put us over the top. I understand extending him can be tricky and maybe just completely out of Jed’s control, but if he isn’t even willing to put a competitive offer on the table, then what is even the point?

That confirms it. Rogers is an idiot. Even if that does eventually happen there is no way the Cubs are trading for Tucker knowing they have no intention of signing him long term.

If they want Tucker longterm for the money he'll want and Tucker is open to it they could throw them Caissie or Alcantara.  I have my doubts Jed will extend for Tucker money, especially in a post-Soto market given he's got Caissie and Alcantara close to the MLB.  Tucker will want 10 years.  Not sure the point of keeping these prospects for 4 seasons cooking in the oven when we've been arse if we were going to move them eventually.

Well FWIW maybe it gives the team the boost needed to swing the division. And if they suck he can recoup a lot at the deadline. We just saw it happen with Cease didnt we?

I mean I definitely think he's just assuming and its not actual reporting he's heard.  But honestly, it wouldnt surprise me if Jed made a trade knowing that it was fairly likely they wouldn't be able to extend him.  At the end of the day, Jed is fighting for his own extension here so next year means a lot more than 2026.  I'm sure they'll attempt to extend him, and potentially offer more than they're comfortable going to try to keep him, but if he gets even half of what Soto just got after a big year, I don't know if the Cubs would go that high.

Well Jesse said he doubts they extend them, sounds like speculation, he's not saying "I heard they want him for the 1 year but are open to extension talks" etc.  I think we all doubt he extends him haha.

At minimum you have to make a trade assuming it's for a year.  No extension is realistically coming until March.  We saw that with Lindor/Betts/etc.

Yeah the FO is too busy this winter to get to extension talks , I agree they have to assume 1 year and at best have a guy open to talks.  March when things calm down for FO is more likely I agree.

Okay smarty pants, when's the last time a 9 figure extension got done in December?

lol Jesse says that in his mind they are trading for Tucker for 1 season only and would be very unlikely to extend him.  Deal makes sense because he's cheap next year and gives them flexibility when he leaves.

So confirmed here that Rogers is just speculating, but his thinking is pretty realistic.

It's one thing to not guarantee a long-term signing if you trade for him. It's another to say the Cubs don't think they have a chance to from the get-go because they want flexibility next offseason. You mean flexibility to sign players just like Tucker to long-term deals?

Jed is so going to be fired.

Glasnow last year?

Well damn I mucked that post up from all angles didn't I.

That said all of the guys in this situation like Betts, and Lindor have been late ST signings.

4-team trade proposal of mine (sarcasm):

Arenado (with some salary eaten) + Cubs prospect(s) and modest Yanks player to Astros (Arenado fits in with the winning+whining culture)

Tucker to Cubs

Bellinger to Yankees

Cardinals get prospect(s) plus cash from Cubs

(Cubs giving prospects and possibly cash here to Astros + Cards)

Looks like the yankees traded for some international bonus pool space. Must be trying to make a stronger pitch for Sasaki

Not allowed apparently:

"New York also picks up an undisclosed amount of money it can use to sign an international amateur before the end of the signing period on Sunday. To be clear, the signing bonus space is unrelated to Roki Sasaki. The Japanese star will be part of next year’s amateur class. Teams cannot trade for ’25 bonus allotments until that signing period begins on January 15."

If they trade forTucker and use near ready mlb players they have to at least try to lock him up long term. Maybe not right away but before the season.

it makes little sense to blow through top level prospects for a rental on a team in the Cubs competition cycle
