that return is so weak it probably made more sense to just hold onto him through training camp and see if anyone would be desperate enough to pick him up or there is an injury or something

seems like the local beat guys/blog boys are circling around the narrative that keeping fields at least until camp was impossible and never in the cards

which leads me to believe that was what the org was feeding them and they didn’t want to deal with the headache and questions

While I didn't expect a 3rd or anything, I'm baffled as to why Pickett netted what he did and Justin only brings back a 6th with potential to be a 4th. I mean Pickett super sucks at least as much as Fields.

Pickett has 2 years on his rookie deal.  Fields has 1 is probably a big factor

Let us all be thankful that this will, at the very least, quiet down the insane Bears fan contingent that thought Fields was way better than he was, that it was insane to do anything other than trade the first overall pick, and refused to hear any other opinion.

Fields already sent out a tweet thanking Chicago...obviously knew this was coming and they were never gonna wait until camp to trade him.

I’m just trying to find the third leg of the stool, might be a two legged stool unless Steele hits Jake Mode

Horton has that kind of upside.

I didn't expect to get a lot for Fields, but a 6th round pick, and not even this year... that is surprising.  But hopefully Fields plays quite a bit for Pittsburgh and plays well.  I want him to succeed, and having the pick upgraded to a 4th would be a nice bonus.

I was coming around to Goony wanting to just keep him if they didn't find a good deal. But, I was always a bit skeptical that they'd want a distraction of "former starter" always looking over the rookie's shoulder, and that was pressure management didn't want to put on him. I especially liked the idea of possibly moving him at the trade deadline or after a playoff caliber QB went down to injury. Oh well. I can forgive this knowing he's making the right choice in drafting Williams.

With that said, it's a very disappointing return. Has anyone seen what kind of playing time will kick in the conditional terms? Russell lost his job to Stidham last year, so maybe Fields will get the necessary playing time. That would be 3 4th's next year if you include the Mooney compensation along with the Carolina 2nd. They also get an extra 6th for the Claypool trade, so they need to make a good pick on that one.

I can only assume Kyle is out getting drunk in celebration?

anyways former bears teammates are chiming in

I'm certainly pretty amused.  I didn't think I was overly optimistic about his reputation in the league, but apparently I was.

He was by all accounts a good teammate and obviously a phenomenal athlete, but he was one of the worst I've ever seen at the most fundamental aspect of the job: deciding where the ball should go at NFL speed.

From the obvious stuff like being the easiest QB to sack in NFL history statistically, to the subtle failures like failing to pull an option and letting his rb eat an obvious run blitzer, fields has made everyone in the building on the offensive side of the ball look worse for three years.

He wasn't an ok starter who golly gee we would love to keep but we just happen to have this no. 1 pick.

He was an awful starter who was bad at superficial statistics and even worse when you dig in, like a .230 hitting outfielder with 20 hrs and 90 rbis but terrible defensively with a .275 obp.

He had the same trade value as Mac Jones and less than Kenny Pickett because that's who he belongs with

Good luck in Pittsburgh, and good luck to Pittsburgh

Conditional kicks in if he takes 51% of offensive snaps

The Bears set him up for failure and then wonder why a 6th round pick is the best they could get. horsefeathers horsefeathers show of a franchise.

Most first round QBs bust, and the price for a bust going into his fourth year is a late round pick.  It's not that deep.

Because teams would rather have a "do nothing/hurt nothing" game manager as a backup

A little but he's also terrible at a QB' main role - passing the ball - and, there's no getting around that, you can't coach his flaws out of him , etc., it'll always show.

It is going to be quite a stunner when the Bears bypass Caleb Williams to draft MHJ, declaring Tyson Bagent their new franchise QB.

The only player they'll bypass Williams for is Maye however, never going to happen, Williams will be a Bear.  I'm going to go out on a limb and say he'll manage to be, at least, average which will be a big upgrade.

I feel bad for Justin, the Bears failed him. But his biggest problem wasn't fixable. Now I'm relieved we don't have to listen to all these people living in an alternate reality where this wasn't always (at least since the Bears were guaranteed 1.1) going to happen.

I actually think Pitt is a good spot for him, he'll be starting before long when Russ collapses on himself.

Obviously I hope for more, but even if he's just Kyler Murray he's the best qb we've ever had
