His pre-snap reads suck, he is a deer in headlight against a zone, he can't navigate a pocket and takes an ungodly amount of terrible sacks, isn't good at throwing receivers open, and he's at his worst in the 4th qtr.

His problems are vast and hugely detrimental to an offense.

You’re talking about Fields, but we were talking about Williams. Or did I misread who this was directed to?

I would like to see Williams improve his quick decision making.  I've never seen a college qb who didn't need to improve their quick decision making to succeed in the NFL. Nobody is running pro-complexity offenses against pro-complexity defenses.

I hate the "wait you're saying he has flaws?!  But Justin Fields has flaws too, doesn't that make them the same?!" thing some people are trying to pull.

But he absolutely does have flaws. He's got the tools to run the sort of quick hit timing plays but he hasn't shown a ton of it on his tape.

I think something people need to let sink in is: Caleb Williams is a vastly better prospect than Justin Fields was in 2021. Prospects aren't blank sheets who the dumbfounded and overmatched Bears coaches fail to manage. They come with different strengths and weaknesses and Williams's strengths (at least as a passer) are significantly better than Fields's was, and his weaknesses are less fatal than what Fields's were (and are).

Some Bears fans should stop trying to talk themselves out of wanting the Bears to draft Caleb Williams.

Some weaknesses from Caleb Williams pre-draft scouting report:

Quote

Needs to play inside the offense and show more discipline

Too eager to go big game hunting

Ravenous appetite for the explosive play can also bring unwanted trouble

Willingness to default to playground style appears to limit his ability to get into a consistent rhythm

Needs to improve anticipatory reads and learn to take what the defense gives him

Decision making can go from good to bad in a moment's notice

Carries ball a little low in the pocket

Wait my mistake, that's Patrick Mahomes' pre-draft scouting report

I suspected they may have taken lesser return to do Justin a favor.  It's a good look, but I'm still not thrilled if they gave up a 4th just to make Justin happy.

Why would Justin want to go to the Steelers knowing he’s going to be a backup and they want to sign Russ to a long-term deal?

I believe they took a lesser offer about as much as I believed they weren't in talks, that the price around the combine was a second-round pick, or that the bears weren't going to make a move until they had Williams medicals.

There's been fake leaks to protect fields at every step of the process.

A "better" offer may have been a 5th round pick, and they have a good reason not to lie here: Fields can confirm whether or not they ask him where he wanted to go.

But assuming its real, and they passed on a 4th or better to do right by Fields, well, I wish my team was a little bit more cutthroat, lol

The difference in quality between a 4th and a 6th isn't that huge.

In return (if true), the Bears help soothe some of the guys in the locker room who seem to have legit loved Fields. They also build a reputation for taking care of their guys as much as possible.

It's probably a fair trade off

And Fields' agency is pretty powerful. It's hard to get equity from a behemoth like that, but I genuinely think Poles wanted to do Fields a solid for how hard he played and how well he dealt with everything.

But if there was even a third or fourth rounder out there for the taking it would have been done.

It's a winning org, great coach, and there's a very good possibility Russ is cooked.

Have you seen Wilson play lately?

Exactly. It says a little something when a team pays you nearly 38m dollars to play anywhere else. He also got benched for Jarret Stidham. Pittsburgh isn't going to just dump the season. They have two guys at QB that are likely better than any of the guys they had last season, and they only owe those two guys 4.5m total this year, which is less than Trubisky, Pickett and Rudolph made. If Wilson isn't getting it done at league minimum, I doubt they wait too long on giving Fields a go at it.

Listening to the Score on the drive into work today, I simply can't believe how angry so many people are that they dumped Fields for Williams.

One guy said he was now a Steelers fan

Another said Williams is too short- Fields would have done better with the new offense talent. USC was garbage last year because of him. A few more that were similar in responses. I get it the Score probably took that hour just to screen for angry Fields fans but its ridiculous

Yes.  He wasn't that bad in Denver, he was just clashing with the coach.

He put up 3000 passing yards with 26 TDs and 8 INTs, for a 98 passer rating.

The only way fields sniffs a snap is if he gets hurt

Or if he, you know, clashes with his coach again.

both seattle and Denver were very enthusiastic about having Wilson not be their QB while he was seemingly still a good qb. That’s weird.

There's gonna be a lot of sturm and drang for the next 8 months, and we're gonna have to hear a lot of people being really stupid and angry.

And, I expect, 4-5 games into the season, everyone will forget about it (because Caleb as a rookie will play at roughly the same or better level as Justin ever did and the team will be good)

There's some truth to this, but it's slightly more complicated.  Additional 2025 guarantees would have triggered if he was still on the roster.  So it wasn't 39M just to make him walk away. It was also 39M to avoid another 37M guarantee next year.

I know there's talk Pittsburgh wants an extension, but we'll see if that goes anywhere.  I wouldn't be surprised if thats a Nov/Dec initiative, and then a lot could happen before rhen.

fun question is if this was available, would you rather have a) Caleb or b) Maye, Barton, Nubin, KJenkins (and maybe Egbuka later?)

Good thing Tomlin is known for being exceptional at working with guys

Wilson is a significantly better QB than his backup.  This isn't a murky situation at all.
