So let's rewind back to the discussion we were having about knowing how much it was going to take to sign Ohtani and every team being in the same ballpark. How many teams do we believe were in the $700M ballpark?

Apparently a crapload of the money is deferred long term so that the Dodgers can balance the competitive tax and add more talent around him.

Deferrals do not affect the CBT impact, he'll cost the 70 million AAV of the deal towards the CBT each year whether he technically gets paid 20 million or 200.

My understanding was that, that's not how the salary cap works. That it was just what ever the per year average was, despite what they were actually paid in that year. Maybe I made that up, but I could swear that's what it was.

Same.  That's why I was confused as to how someone like Passan would tweet that.

It will be interesting to see how long it takes now for the flurry of moves to begin . Yamamoto could still hold the pitching market up

FWIW. This is where it came from.

Not many. Sorry but I can’t blame the Cubs for not getting him at that figure.

I think the CBT number is based on the net present value of the contract in these situations

Man I wanted him badly and always knew it would be the Dodgers but damn. I can't believe we were ever close if that's the money he's getting. I will be curious what details leak about the negotiation process in the coming days.

Yeah I saw that, unless there's some language in the CBA that is unique and been widely misinterpreted, that is not correct(a rarity from Passan).  MLB's own glossary is fairly clear on that front: https://www.mlb.com/glossary/transactions/competitive-balance-tax

Quote

A team's Competitive Balance Tax figure is determined using the average annual value of each player's contract on the 40-man roster, plus any additional player benefits. Every team's final CBT figure is calculated at the end of each season. (Note: If a player signs a contract extension that doesn't kick in until a later season, his AAV for the purposes of the CBT doesn't change until the new deal begins.)

Gotta feel for jays fans a little. Yesterday it was all but guaranteed he was going there. Today? They look like nothing more than a negotiating tactic.

Good. We don’t have to do this again. Ever.

Not surprising. The idea of opt outs in these contracts is dead. Teams haven't given one out since Gerrit Cole and his is voidable by the team if the Yankees tack on another year to the deal.

Logically it seems like it should be the case too. Otherwise you’re essentially signing the guy to a 25 year deal (or whatever it is). Weren’t a couple of the deals last winter not allowed because a team tried to stretch it too far on how many years they offered?
