Paying ace-level prices for guys with Fulmer's strikeout rates would concern the heck out of me. I've never watched him pitch, though. I see he's got good speed on his fastball and that his mix is 4-seam, 2-seam, slider, change. It looks like the fb is well above average, the change is pretty decent and that the slider is kind of meh. Would a young John Lackey be a decent comp?

I know Schwarbs has struggled this year, but I still have confidence that he's the same guy we thought was going to be a top 20 hitter in MLB. And for whatever it is worth, this is a guy that has proven he can step up on the biggest stage and deliver. I'd rather trade Happ if we had to ship out one of the young OF's (and assuming that nobody has an irrational love of Almora).

I'm sure this name has been brought up and dismissed but....any chance the Giants make Bumgarner available? He'd cost a ton, but two more cheap years after this, and the pieces we seem open to trading (Schwarber, Happ, Baez) allows them to frame it as more of a retool than a rebuild.

Their fanbase would eat them alive, although Baez probably looked pretty amazing to them in the NLDS.

Yeah the PR is probably one of the main issues, but 34-56 is 34-56, especially in what looks to be a ridiculously competitive division going forward. Even with Lester looking more mortal lately, having those two at the top of the rotation this year and through 2019 would be pretty intimidating, and wouldn't break the bank at all.

Edit: And part of me wonders if his reputation among the fanbase took a hit when he put himself out for 2 disastrous months with an avoidable injury.

PEOPLE, just because a team is temporarily bad does not mean they are going to trade every single good player on their roster. Sometimes they keep a few of them around.

Nope. Zero. Fanbase would lose their minds. He is their ace and they're probably losing Cueto after this season.

Plus I'm not sure I'd give up what it would cost to get him. Probably all of Schwarber, Happ, Eloy, Cease, and more.

But.....that said.....thoughts on seeing what the Mets want for deGrom?

There's a snowball's chance in hell that the Giants trade Bumgardner for anything less than Schwarber, Eloy, Baez/Russell, Happ, and more. They may be bad this year but I doubt they think their window is closed for the next couple years.

lol he's an ace on a team friendly deal that is also a legend on a team that will never rebuild. Even if they decided to rebuild he's younger than Kershaw and a piece you build around. So no, he will not be traded.

Even with Quintana I still want one more starting pitcher. Obviously the guy won't be as good as Quintana but what can we get for guys like Zagunis/Candelerio maybe Almora etc. The guy just has to be better than Butler/ Lackey so that shouldn't be too hard to accomplish.

Montgomery too. Lester/Q/Hendricks/Arrieta/Montgomery is fine with me, although if they want to make another Montgomery deal I won't be opposed. With Butler, Anderson, and technically Lackey still around, I don't know how necessary it is though.

I forgot about Anderson so you're right we probably don't need another arm for this year. But acquiring another Montgomery type arm for next season is probably going to be needed.

Looking at some options, now that we have Quintana, what would Gausman and Caleb Jospeh cost? Gausman can fill the Montgomery role and Joseph rates as a solid framer and has a decent bat.

Really like this idea and we have plenty of chips to play with still to get it done

This would likely be more of a Monty type trade, but if we can take away from the pre-draft comments about the FO finding something they like in pitchers and with who they took it appears to be the curveball.... are there any guys who may be struggling a bit/former good prospects that are ranking high on curveball effectiveness but otherwise not doing well and/or in a bad role?

Interesting idea. I did some Fangraphs filtering(SP, 60+ IP, 10+% curveballs, 3.5+ ERA or FIP to remove already good players) and also trimmed some teams that won't be selling pitchers and here's the names that jump out to me:

Quintana

Verlander

Alex Cobb

Martin Perez

Bundy

The problem with the Montgomery trade is he wasn't starting in MLB at the time of the deal, so filtering in a way that you don't have to comb through every person to get a few dozen IP is difficult.

If any team could make it work, it'd probably be Oakland with their penchant for guys who don't necessarily have super high ceilings, although I agree it would probably require either Almora or Happ.

I could see him loving Zagunis

Happ, Zagunis, Candelario and Clifton?

I'm horrible at these things so feel free to mock me.

Welp, see ya Albert.

I'm wondering if these reports of interest are being leaked just to drive the price up for Milwaukee. I'm an Oakland apologist and I wouldn't give up a ton for Gray with his injury history.

Rosenthal also just tweeted backing up Morosi that Cubs indeed are pursuing Gray

In addition to possibly Happ or Almora, I wonder if Beane believes in Montgomery as a starter and would want him as return piece?

That's an interesting thought, if you believe in Montgomery and maybe have some pessimism on Gray's health, then you might not view them as terribly different values, and adding more depth like Almora, or Caratini, etc tips you over the edge. Whether that's feasible probably depends on how willing other teams are to give up more premier prospects for Gray. The Yankees might be more desperate after Pineda's injury, for example.
