seriously?

how the horsefeathers?

Even I scoffed.

Super weird I don't remember the details of a trade from nine years ago.

This trade was a board highlight. A poster said that he called the Tribune Company switchboard and the secretary said a trade was imminent. We all laughed and the poster relied not to poke fun because he had cancer. Everyone was still reeling in shock when the trade got announced. No word if the original poster was the purple Fanta shirt guy.

Maybe I'm just missing some obvious examples, but I cannot think of too many trades that the Cubs have made that I regret that we made. Like even the Harden deal, he gave us like 25 quality starts and could only go like 4 innings in the playoffs before falling off the rails and if you look at WAR the A's completely fleeced us, but I don't regret it at all considering where Donaldson was in his development at the time and how much we needed a pitcher of Harden's quality on the team (and he was under control for another season).

I do regret the Garza trade. I loved Archer at the time and we weren't really in the position to be adding pieces for prospects to an aging team that was losing talent and had a weak farm system.

I remember all that. I just didn't remember that's Donaldson was the fourth piece of the deal. Jesus

btw i thought the story was that sweet swingin' billy called to tell hendry to make a trade, and hendry's secretary "took the message" for him.

I am still fond of whomever leaked the conference call dial-in number for whatever transaction that was that many of us got on the line for.

What's this now? There a poster connected to the Cubs who did this?

this may have been pre nsb, I don't remember the details of how it happened, but it was probably more of an error in distribution by the cubs than a poster that worked for the cubs.

I gave out the draft conference call number to some people once or twice.

Yeah who knows with Beane and also maybe some teams are turned off a bit from Gray's injurys lately or being a smaller dude. Maybe something like Monty, Almora, Jeimer and Zagunis will be enough for him and Doolittle. Beane is a weird enough guy too maybe something like Paredes being the main piece gets it done.

how many of you guys remember when the cubs accidentally posted a profile for don baylor before he was officially hired (and i think this happened not that long after the Bears' gaffe with mcginnis)?

Posted, where, with the town crier? Everyone knows the internet didn't exist until 2006.

I want to keep Montgomery because the Cubs' pitching prospect tract is a yawning abyss of despair and they can't afford to trade him away.

I remember when Ricky Nolasco hit what wound up being his peak and Pinto and Mitre looked like they'd be useful for awhile, that I thought the Pierre trade was going to be looked back on as a disaster. Pierre was a dud, but those three didn't produce as much as I thought. That said though..had we kept that SP depth in the organization, would we ever have traded for Harden?

Was he? I mean, yeah, Hendry's reasoning and execution of trading for just a single season are pretty clunky at best, but the dude was a 3.1 fWAR player that season for the Cubs. The 2006 Cubs were butt, but maybe it's time to look back a bit more positively on ol' Slappy.

yeah when you brought that up recently it blew my mind that he provided that much value. i remember him being pretty universally loathed around these parts back then.

I think fWar is a bit generous. Maybe I remember wrong, but aside from his less-than-hoped-for OBP, he had good range but he also had a noodle arm that other teams exploited at will. He was value neutral on the base paths, getting thrown out 20 or so times... Maybe he wasn't bad compared to a replacement, and maybe my expectations of a .360 to .370 obp were unreasonable, but my lasting impression of his time here was always terrible.

Oh, definitely. I had nothing but a negative perception of his short stint on the Cubs until randomly looking him up earlier this year and being surprised at the Fangraphs value. Granted, BR only had him at 2.0, but honestly, even that was better than what I was expecting.

I mean, really, 2006 was just such a dumpster fire of a season; it was easy to kinda hate everything.
