i'm not interested at all in any expensive rentals

Agreed, only on a re-sign

Well that's not going to happen. I'd be fine giving up guys not on the 25 man for Yu, but I still think we get outbid in the end.

Why not wait until the offseason and bring him trucks full of yen

Because he's pitching with a surgically repaired elbow and the Cubs are trying to win the World Series this year.

why not get him now so he can help us win a division and another world series

A Darvish package likely includes Happ, Baez or Schwarber as the lead piece, right? I feel like for a pitcher of his caliber, any offer without one of those three can easily be beaten by any other team interested in him.

And if you do need to include one of those guys, do you?

Because what it would take is likely something like Ian Happ, and I don't want to borrow from Paul to pay for Mary

theo wouldn't do something stupid like that. i figured we were operating under this assumption.

I feel like this is where all these trade rumors for guys like Darvish, Gray, Britton, etc. end. Not going on anything concrete, but I don't think Theo's looking to trade anyone off the 25-man. Given that, I don't think we have what it takes for any of the top arms on the market. These rumors all seem like due diligence and driving up the price for other teams.

my max offer would be like almora, candelario, de la cruz, zagunis, etc. and whatever the hell else they want from the minors

and it's probably not enough. but i don't see any way theo gives up anyone better than almora to rent him.

Darvish would tie Quintana for the lowest starter FIP on the team, so I think it would be a pretty great addition. I also think we'll be easily outbid.

Lester-Quintana-Darvish-Hendricks-Arrieta. Ya, that would do. Who do you drop for a playoff series? Almost has to be Arrieta, right?

I'm in that boat too. I don't think Theo will ultimately deal for Darvish, but look at what a rental like JD Martinez brought back. He was about a 1-1.5 WAR improvement for the DBacks and they gave up nothing outside of Dawel Lugo. So, even while assuming that a front line SP will be a little more valuable because you can adjust his usage more than a position player, Darvish won't cost someone off the 25 man roster.

I don't see it with just our minor league stock. Paint me a pitcher David. And no happy little horsefeathering trees. Paul Klee, and nothing less

I agree with you on value, but once you start discussing trading prospects, basically every contender can blow us out of the water. If Darvish only cost the remaining scraps of our farm system, I'd be absolutely shocked and overjoyed.

You never know. The Dodgers are sniffing around at Gerrit Cole and Julio Teheran. Maybe they just stay out of the bidding completely, opting for a guy with control. The Astros have been linked to Sonny Gray a lot. Maybe these other top teams just head in different directions. And is a team like the Twins going to fork over much for a rental, for their .500 team? Nah. It could be that there just isn't much of a market for him. Look at what the Tigers just got for J.D. Martinez.

What I'm saying is, stay in on this, Theo. Ride it out and hope you can get something done, revolving around Candelario and Zagunis or something.

we got harden and gaudin for what at the time was a very meh package (obviously, turned out great for oakland). granted, that was 9 years ago so landscape has changed a bit.

It really seems like a Theo-type shocker move, too. Just go all out on the rotation.

And, with Quintana already in hand, you aren't worried as much about trading for another cost-controlled guy. Use what we have on the farm to get the best player we can. We aren't getting another good cost-controlled arm with that. So get the rental. Then use that sweet, sweet cash to fill that hole in the off-season.

The Yankees are the team I can most easily see blowing us outta the water.

I still don't think the Yankees are going all-in this year, but yeah they could ruin any Darvish deal, and they need him more if they are planning on going for it.

I don't think the Dodgers make the push for Darvish or any SP really. Kershaw/Wood/Hill/Maeda is perfectly fine for a playoff series and they're all under control the next couple of years at least.

Any team could blow us out of the water, sure. But you'd say the same thing about the Diamondbacks, and they just landed a guy with an OPS over 1.000. I'm not saying you're wrong. And you'd think they'd be interested and might offer up something a little nice. But, then again, the Yankees have spent some time building up their farm and heading on a new path. Maybe they remain a little stingy, knowing their recent injuries and poor play. Sure, they did buy a rental in Frazier, but only with two good, controlled pen arms attached. And I don't think they gave up too much there, either.

And maybe the Rangers ask for one of their top prospects, and the Yankees won't budge and talks go nowhere. And Theo swoops in and tells them to choose whoever the hell they want and can get something done for cheaper than you'd expect. And the Yankees are left saying, "Hey, we could have beat that!" Wishful thinking, perhaps. But you never know.

I'm not saying it's likely to happen or anything. But it might be a smart route to go down, since we assuredly aren't getting a stud like Gray without using one of our MLB pieces.

Also, Theo probably knows where the grandparents of the Rangers' front office lives.
